After splitting the first two games of the series, the ALDS now moves to Ohio as the New York Yankees (1-1) take on the Cleveland Guardians (1-1). The Guardians will host this one at Progressive Field, with the first pitch scheduled for 7:37 pm ET.
It took ten innings on Friday, but the Guardians prevailed 4-2. Emmanuel Clase picked up the win in relief after pitching 2.1 scoreless innings. Amed Rosario homered for the Guardians, while the first five batters picked up a combined eight hits.
Nestor Cortes was fantastic for New York, going five innings and allowing just two runs. Jameson Taillon struggled in relief, though, taking the loss after giving up two runs on three hits. Giancarlo Stanton homered in the defeat.
The Yankees are the slight favorites despite playing on the road. They are -120 to win, while the Guardians’ moneyline sits at +102. The runline features Cleveland +1.5 (-178), and the over/under for total runs is seven. Yankees Looking For Stars To Step Up
After losing a heartbreaker on Friday, the New York Yankees have to regroup as they travel to Cleveland for Saturday’s Game 3. They are hoping that the flight gives star Aaron Judge a chance to regroup.
Coming into Game 3, Judge is hitless in eight at bats, striking out seven times and drawing just a single walk. This comes after a season in which he hit .311/.425/.686 with 62 home runs, 131 runs batted in, 133 runs, and 16 stolen bases.
On the mound for Aaron Boone’s club will be righty Luis Severino. In 19 games this season, Severino went 7-3 with a 3.18 ERA, 1.00 WHIP, and he had 112 strikeouts in 102 innings.
Severino was dominant in his last start, throwing seven scoreless innings and striking out seven against the Texas Rangers. The problem is that the start was way back on October 3, so it will be interesting to see how sharp Severino is early on.
Guardians Look To Take Series Advantage At Home
Cleveland did what they needed to do, and that is take at least one of two from the Yankees in New York. Now returning home, they will look to take the series lead at home, where they were 46-35 this season.
Manager Terry Francona will hand the ball to righty Triston McKenzie on Saturday. In 31 games, McKenzie is 11-11 with a 2.96 ERA, 0.95 WHIP, and he struck out 190 in 191.1 innings.
McKenzie was electric in his last start against the Rays in the Wild Card series. He went six scoreless innings, allowing just two hits, and struck out eight in a no-decision. The Guardians went on to win that one 1-0.
Just like in the regular season, Jose Ramirez is leading the offense. This postseason, he is hitting .278/.316/.556 with a home run, two runs batted in, and two runs scored. Both he and Oscar Gonzalez (.278 avg, HR, 2 RBI) have led the ballclub this postseason.
Take Cleveland To Take Series Lead
The momentum in this one certainly sits with the Guardians. Not only are they coming off of an emotional win on Friday, but they hold the edge on the mound with Triston McKenzie taking the ball Saturday night.
There are a few things that are noteworthy for New York. They are 8-2 in their last ten games at Progressive Field. Also, the Guardians will likely be without one of their best bullpen weapons in Emmanuel Clase, who pitched 2.1 innings in Game 2.
Still, Cleveland is 4-1 in their last five home games, and you can expect McKenzie to keep dealing as he did in the Wild Card series. There is a ton of value in the Guardians, so take them to win straight up at +102.
