2024 College Football National Championship Underdog Betting Analysis: Washington Odds

Despite being undefeated on the season, Kalen DeBoer and his Washington Huskies are the underdogs as we head to the National Title game in College Football.  The Huskies beat the Texas Longhorns in New Orleans on New Year’s Day to move to 14-0 on the season.

Washington scored 37 points in the game, but needed a stop late to seal the deal on the way. Washington came into the College Football Playoff after beating Oregon in the Pac-12 title game. The Washington Huskies are +4.5 against Michigan.

Thanks to this look at the National Championship betting underdog that could potentially rise up and take that title from Michigan that could challenge for the 2024 College Football Playoff National Championship game.

Let’s get started.

Washington Elite on the Offense End

The Washington Huskies certainly can win this game over Michigan. This is a team that has been doubted all season. The Huskies were underdogs in the Pac-12 title game to an Oregon team that they had beaten earlier in the season.

The question is, why are they overlooked? The offense is absolutely stacked from top to bottom. There is a reason quarterback Michael Penix Jr needs 352 yards to get to 5,000 on the season. Rome Odunze is nearly automatic, with 87 receptions, 1,553 yards and 13 touchdowns on the season.

If it is not Odunze, then there are other options. Ja’Lynn Polk is going to be a problem at the next level as an elite receiver. He finished second on the team with 1,122 yards and 9 touchdown receptions. Jalen McMillan also had a solid season, with 39 receptions, 526 yards and 4 touchdowns.

The running game is not a huge priority for the Huskies, but they use it to make sure the defense is staying honest on the pass game. Penix rushed a few times in the win over Texas, but mostly it’s Dillon Johnson. The running back has 222 carries, 1,162 yards and 16 touchdowns on the season.

Washington Will Need Some Defense

On the other side, the Washington Huskies would love to get to the quarterback more. The Huskies only had 21 sacks all season. Their top guy was defensive end Zion Tupuola-Fetui, and also linebacker Edefuan Ulofoshio. They combined for 6.5 of those sacks.

Causing turnovers has been a focal point for the defense. On the season, Washington has 16 interceptions. Two of those were returned for touchdowns. The Huskies also forced six fumbles, recovering four of them on the season. The two defensive touchdowns came from Ulofoshio, and safety Mishael Powell.

Huskies Winning Tight Games

One of the more amazing statistics you will see regarding the Washington Huskies is their ability to win tight games. After blowing out Boise State, Tulsa, Michigan State and California in their first four games, it’s been pretty close games ever since. The Huskies have won 10 straight games by 10 points or less.

The streak started with a road win at Arizona by 7, and moved to Oregon by 3, Arizona State by 8, Stanford by 9, USC by 10, Utah by 7, Oregon State by 2, Washington State by 3, and Oregon again by 3. The win over Texas was by 6, with the Longhorns having a chance to go ahead late in the game.

College Football National Championship Underdog Final Betting Analysis | How Can They Do It?

How can the Washington Huskies beat the Michigan Wolverines and win the National title? Easy. Michael Penix Jr continues to do Michael Penix Jr things. This is by far the best defense he will face. He has some experience against Michigan and their system from previous seasons, but never seen the talent the Wolverines have on the field.

If Penix can continue to move the ball effectively enough, and not turn it over, Washington can win this game. The Huskies defense is good enough to limit JJ McCarthy and the Michigan offense. Will they win it? Yes! Washington wins this game and the national title 31-28.

Why Washington Will Cover the Spread in the NCAAF National Championship

Michael Penix Jr. is on a mission

Washington’s quarterback was unbelievable against the Texas Longhorns. Michael Penix Jr. completed 29-of-38 for 430 yards and threw a couple of touchdown passes.

Penix Jr. also scrambled for 31yards on 3 carries. The Heisman Trophy runner-up completed passes in incredibly small windows. MPJ feels slighted for not having won the Heisman, the award went to LSU quarterback Jaylen Daniels.

So he’s on a mission to prove that Heisman voters had it wrong. No doubt, Michael Penix Jr. is going to do his part to put Washington into a position to beat the Michigan Wolverines.

Michigan’s Defense Can’t Cover All Three Washington Future NFL Receivers

One of the reasons Michael Penix Jr. is such a great quarterback is because he can throw to three NFL-level wide receivers. Many felt Romeo Odunze was this season’s Biletnikoff winner.

Odunze caught 6 passes for 125 yards against the Texas Longhorns. But Odunze wasn’t the only player that scorched the Horns.

Ja’Lynn Polk caught 5 passes for 122 yards and a TD. Jalen McMillan caught 5 passes for 58 yards and a touchdown.

If Michigan manages to contain Odunze, Polk, and McMillan, they must deal with Jack Westover and Jermaine Bernard. Penix Jr. has a bevy of weapons at his disposal.

The Huskies Bend but Don’t Break Defense Will Force a Couple of Field Goals

Washington’s D gives up a lot of yards, but the unit is good at forcing turnovers. It’s also excellent at holding teams to field goals instead of touchdowns.

Because Washington’s offense is so effective, the Huskies would only have to hold Michigan to field goals on 2 or 3 possessions in order to keep the game within the spread line odds.

Head Coach Kalen DeBoer will Make Smarter Decisions if the Game is Close

Kalen DeBoer and the rest of Washington’s coaching staff made a few silly decisions towards the end of the game. The first was handing the ball off to banged up running back Dillon Johnson.

Johnson got injured and saved 30 seconds for Texas’ end of game rally attempt. Other bad decisions include calling trick plays after Texas coughed it up in the red Zone. Using clock at that point in the game and ending the drive with points would have prevented Texas from having any shot.

DeBoer and his staff won’t make those mistakes on January 8, which means the Huskies will be in a great position to not only cover but to also pull off the straight up win.

2020 National Championship Betting Lines – Underdogs Analysis

With the Clemson Tigers pulling off the big national championship ‘upset’ to beat Alabama on Monday night and claim their second national championship in three years, now is a perfect time for college football betting buffs everywhere to start looking toward next season – and no – it’s never too early to start making betting plans for a new campaign.

Thanks to this look at six National Championship betting underdogs that could potentially rise up and put some bark in their bite, you’re going to get some great early insight into a half-dozen teams that could challenge for the 2020 national championship.

Let’s get started.

Texas Longhorns

  • 2020 National Championship Odds: (20-1)

Texas went 10-4 this past season and 7-2 in Big 12 play, but the Longhorns capped off their 2018 campaign with a huge, 28-21 win over No. 5 Georgia in the Sugar Bowl. Texas went 7-6 in Tom Herman’s first season in 2017 and then jumped up to 10 wins this past season. With an experienced quarterback returning in dual-threat signal-caller Sam Ehlinger and talent on both sides of the ball, Texas could surprise in 2019.

Nebraska Cornhuskers

  • 2020 National Championship Odds: (25-1)

Nebraska went 4-8 in Scott Frost’s first season and 3-6 in Big Ten play, but things could change in 2019 behind gifted quarterback Adrian Martinez after he passed for 2,617 yards with 17 touchdowns while running for 629 with eight scores as a freshman this past season.

Washington Huskies

  • 2020 National Championship Odds: (25-1)

The Huskies went 10-4 and 7-2 in Pac-12 play while winning 10 games and playing in a New Year’s Six bowl game for the third straight year under head coach Chris Petersen. While Washington returns seven starters on offense, the Huskies return just two on defense and lose four-year starting quarterback Jake Browning and four-time 1,000-yard rusher Myles Gaskin and those losses will be difficult to overcome, to say the least.

Florida Gators

2020 National Championship Odds: (25-1)

The Gators went 10-3 and 5-3 in SEC play in Dan Mullen’s first season and capped off their 2018 campaign with a statement-making 41-15 blowout win over then, No. 8 Michigan in the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl.

Now, Florida looks poised to challenge for something even bigger next season if quarterback Feleipe Franks can continue his maturation under the offensive-minded Mullen. While Florida returns five starters on offense and seven on defense, they’re losing four starting offensive linemen, so they’ll need to find capable replacements in a hurry.

Notre Dame Fighting Irish

2020 National Championship Odds: (25-1)

Despite getting blasted off the field in their national semifinal matchup against Clemson, the Fighting Irish (12-1) return starting quarterback Ian Book returning, along with four starting offensive linemen and two of their top three receivers.

The bad news is that Notre dames lose several key starters on defense and both starting kickers. Still, Brian Kelly has talent and the Irish could challenge for something meaningful in 2019.

Oregon Ducks

2020 National Championship Odds: (30-1)

The Ducks went a modest 9-5 and 5-4 in Pac-12 play to fall one win short of reaching the coveted double-digit mark, but Oregon could challenge in 2019 for a few reasons.

First and foremost, the Ducks are returning gifted quarterback Justin Herbert after he spurned the NFL and Oregon could have every starter on offense back – and that looks dangerous after they finished second in scoring in the Pac-12. Head coach Mario Cristobal has talent, but the Ducks have a treacherous schedule that includes dates against non-conference title hopeful Auburn and Texas.

Last 10 National Champions

  • 2018: Clemson Tigers
  • 2017: Alabama Crimson Tide
  • 2016: Clemson Tigers
  • 2015: Alabama Crimson Tide
  • 2014: Ohio State Buckeyes
  • 2013: Florida State Seminoles
  • 2012: Alabama Crimson Tide
  • 2011: Alabama Crimson Tide
