Season Series
This is the final meeting of the regular season between the teams. The Cavs lead 2-0. The game in Miami was on Dec. 1 and the Cavs rolled to a 111-85 win to end a 20-game losing streak in south Florida. Kevin Love scored 22 points, Jarrett Allen added 19 points and 11 rebounds and Darius Garland finished with 16 points for the Cavaliers, who had not won on the Heat’s home court since Jan. 25, 2010. Allen is now out injured. Tyler Herro scored 21 points for Miami, which played without injured starters Jimmy Butler and Bam Adebayo.
Why Bet on Cleveland?
The Cavs lost All-Star center Jarrett Allen to a broken finger last Sunday and played their first game without him Wednesday, winning 127-124 at Indiana. The Pacers went ahead 124-122 with 40 seconds remaining when Malcolm Brogdon was credited with a basket after Evan Mobley was called for goaltending. Mobley then tied the game on a putback, and Darius Garland put the Cavs ahead with two free throws with 14 seconds left after Jalen Smith made an ill-advised foul on Garland.
Darius Garland hit 14-of-26 shots for a career-high 41 points and added 13 assists and two steals. In four games since returning from a back injury, he has double-doubled in three straight and is averaging 29.3 points, 11.5 assists and 3.8 rebounds while shooting above 50 percent from the floor and 40 percent from downtown. He’s also hit all 17 of his free throw attempts in his last three games.
Garland was the first Cavs player with 40+ PTS and 10+ AST in a game since LeBron James on April 6, 2018 (44 PTS, 11 AST at PHI). Garland is on pace to join Magic Johnson as the only players in NBA history to finish a season averaging 20.0+ PPG, 8.0+ APG, .460+ FG% and .900+ FT%.
Rookie of the Year favorite Evan Mobley hit 8-of-15 shots and 6-of-8 free throws for 22 points, 12 rebounds, three assists, five steals and a block. Not only were the five steals a career high but he hadn’t even had a single steal in his previous six games. He has back-to-back 20-point double-doubles and will have to carry a bigger load with Allen out. Mobley needs five blocks to become the fourth rookie in Cavs history with 100 blocks in their rookie season.
Starting guard Caris LeVert (right foot sprain) has been ruled out for Friday’s game. LeVert was thought to be on a “week-to-week” timeline at the time of his injury in late February.
Cleveland is looking to win back-to-back games in Miami for the first time since winning 3 straight from March 2, 2009 to Jan. 25, 2010. A win would also mark Cleveland’s first season sweep over Miami since the 2009-10 season (3-0).
Why Bet on Miami?
The Heat had a three-game winning streak snapped Wednesday in a 111-90 home loss to Phoenix in a potential NBA Finals preview. Suns All-Star Devin Booker, returning from a four-game absence for virus-related issues — he said he was asymptomatic and didn’t have any problems — flirted with a triple-double, finishing with 23 points, nine assists and eight rebounds. Phoenix improved the NBA’s best record to 53-13, and the reigning Western Conference champion Suns have now beaten all other 29 teams this season — the first time they’ve done that since 2006-07. They are the first team to clinch a playoff berth.
Duncan Robinson scored 22 points and had just one turnover in 31 minutes. IT was the most Robinson has scored in a game since January and his six three-pointers made were his most since mid-February. He’s shooting 36.6% from deep this season, which is well below his career average of 40.6%. Robinson has on 723 career three-point field goals, already the second-most in Heat history, only Tim Hardaway has more (806).
Kyle Lowry only took three shots in his second game back from a personal absence, finishing with five points, 10 assists, five rebounds, and three turnovers in 32 minutes. Lowry had 10 assists for the 16th time this season. He passed Norm Nixon for the 30th most assists in NBA history with 6,388.
The Heat did play without All-Star Jimmy Butler but he’s likely to go Friday as it was simply a minor sinus congestion. Reserve Caleb Martin (left knee) is questionable for Friday’s game.
The Heat are holding teams to 104.7 points this season, the fourth-lowest in the NBA, and are 21-1 when holding teams under 100. Miami is 24-2 when shooting at least 40 percent from three-point range and a perfect 17-0 when shooting at least 50 percent from the field.
After playing in the most road games in the NBA entering the March home schedule, Miami has 11 home games this month, tying for the most in a single month in team history when they also played 11 home games in January 2012 and March 2003.
