Sacramento Kings Insights

The Kings had been playing much better since firing Coach Mike Brown in December but enter having lost four of five following a 144-110 blowout defeat in Oklahoma City on Saturday. Perhaps the trade chatter around All-Star guard De’Aaron Fox is a distraction. The Kings are open to moving him. Fox has a $37.1 million salary next season and could become a free agent in 2026 if an extension is not reached – Fox has hinted he will not re-sign long term so that’s why he could be had.

In that loss to the Thunder, the Kings were out rebounded a whopping 70-37 and OKC had 82 first-half points. Those were the most points scored by the Thunder in one half this season, and fell one point short of a team record for any half. Sacramento cut a big first-half deficit to 53-44 on a layup by Domantas Sabonis, but Oklahoma City went on a 29-11 run to make it 82-55 at the break. All five starters scored in double figures, but Sacramento went just 11 of 44 on 3s (25%).

DeMar DeRozan

“We didn’t play hard, didn’t compete, got embarrassed, got our ass kicked,” Kings forward DeRozan said. “Whatever the reason, whatever we did or didn’t do, it’s about how we respond from here.”

De’Aaron Fox

Fox had a team-high 20 points along with four rebounds and four assists. Over his last 10 contests, he is averaging 19.1 points, 6.0 assists, 5.2 rebounds blocks and 2.1 three-pointers per game while his name circulates around trade rumors, so stay close at the trends and MyBookie NBA prediction to finally see what happens.

Reports are that Fox has been less engaged than usual this season after declining a preseason extension, and that it didn’t help matters when he received undeserved blame for the firing of Brown. Fox is one of three players in the league averaging 25.0 points, 5.0 rebounds, 5.0 assists and 1.5 steals per game. He is averaging 16.3 drives per contest, fifth-most in the NBA this season, scoring 11.2 points per game off-drives (4th). Fox is tied for 14th in the league in total steals, while sitting sixth in deflections per game (3.3) and seventh in total deflections. He also ranks second in the league in total fourth-quarter points.

Domantas Sabonis

“It’s noise,” Sabonis said. “I don’t think a lot of us are paying attention to the media as much. We don’t talk about it in the locker room. We’re just focused on winning, and (interim coach Doug Christie) is making sure we ignore that. “This is my ninth year in the league. If it’s going to happen, it’s going to happen. It’s going to pop up on our phones. There’s no point in looking at it every second.”

Sabonis had 16 points, seven boards and five assists as his streak of three straight triple-doubles ended Saturday. Sabonis has only played 31 minutes with the result in hand early in the second half. He leads the NBA in rebounds while ranking Top 10 in assists. He has pulled down 20+ boards in 25 career games, the fourth-most in the Association since Sabonis joined the league in 2016-17, that’s something we consider in this MyBookie NBA prediction.

Keegan Murray

Murray added 14 points and five rebounds. He is averaging 12.3 points and 6.5 rebounds over his past eight while shooting 50.0 percent from the field and 34.1 percent from deep. Murray has had 20+ points in 34 career games as the Kings are 25-9 (.735) when he hits the 20-point mark.

Minnesota Timberwolves Insights

Minnesota had a five-game winning streak snapped in shocking fashion on Saturday as the NBA-worst Washington Wizards won 105-103 in the Twin Cities, but the Wolves were without All-Star and leading scorer Anthony Edwards due to illness. Edwards has been on a tear as of late, scoring 30 or more points on 50%+ field goal percentage in three of the team’s last five wins entering Saturday. For the season, he averages 26.6 points, 5.7 rebounds, and 4.5 assists. Edwards is putting together a historic season from beyond the three-point line. He has knocked down 198 threes this season, the fourth most made threes in a single-season in franchise history.

Julius Randle

Forward Randle suffered a groin strain in Thursday’s blowout win over the Utah Jazz, and he didn’t play Saturday, either. While Edwards might return Monday, Randle won’t. It sounds like the Wolves may be reluctant to let Randle play again before the All-Star break, which is less than two weeks away. Randle is averaging 18.9 points, 7.2 rebounds and 4.5 assists with his new team.

Naz Reid

Then early in the third quarter Saturday, Reid, an emergency starter in Randle’s place, left the game and did not return because of a right finger sprain. Add already injured Donte DiVincenzo and the Wolves played the Wizards with only Jaden McDaniels and Rudy Gobert as regular starters.

Chris Finch

“We’ve got to do it by committee,” Coach Finch said of playing with different players and combinations for now.

Rudy Gobert

Gobert had 16 points, 16 rebounds and two blocs in the loss, his best performance on the glass since he pulled down 18 boards against the Clippers on Jan. 6. Gobert will be leaned on even more heavily in the short term as the team’s anchor in the paint with Randle out and possibly Reid as well. Over his last eight games, Gobert is averaging 12.9 points, 9.5 rebounds and 1.8 blocks steals while shooting 65.5 percent from the floor.

Mike Conley

Veteran point guard Conley had 16 points and five assists. After missing Minnesota’s prior game with a minor thumb issue, Conley looked fine in his return. The 37-year-old has scored double-digit points in only three of eight appearances since moving back into the starting five in mid-January with DiVincenzo injured. Over that span, he’s averaging 10.0 points and 5.1 assists.

Conley called playing with some new guys due to injuries an adjustment that needs to be made no matter how much or little teammates have played together before.

The Stats

Minnesota is 6-1 when making 20+ threes this year. The Wolves tallied four such games during the entire 2023-24 season. Their 25 games with 15+ makes from deep are the fourth-most such games in the NBA this season. The Wolves are 15-10 when making at least 15. The Wolves have now recorded 35+ assists 20 times during the Finch era (Feb. 22, 2021), going 17-3 when doing so. The Timberwolves have held their opponent below 100 points 13 times this year, improving to 12-1 when doing so and tying Orlando for the third most such games in the NBA this season.

Kings vs Timberwolves Season Series & MyBookie NBA Prediction

This concludes the season series with the Timberwolves leading 2-1, but the Kings won the last matchup 115-104 on Nov. 27 in the Twin Cities. Malik Monk had 27 points, nine assists and eight rebounds, and De’Aaron Fox added 26 points, eight assists and eight rebounds to lead the Kings. Monk and Fox combined to outscore the Timberwolves 17-2 over the final five minutes. Domantas Sabonis had 27 points and 12 rebounds. Led by Sabonis, Sacramento outscored Minnesota 64-36 in the paint. The Kings also had 12 offensive rebounds to four for the Timberwolves. Anthony Edwards led Minnesota with 29 points but went 9 for 24 from the field. Minnesota leads all-time 70-63 but has lost the past five at home in the series.
