Warriors vs Mavericks Series History
It’s the third of four meetings this season with the teams having split the first two – both in San Francisco. They last met on Dec. 15 and the Mavs won 143-133.
Luka Doncic, now a member of the Lakers, dominated for Dallas with 45 points, 13 assists and 11 rebounds. Stephen Curry had 26 points and 10 assists for Golden State. The teams combined for an NBA-record (at the time) 48 3-pointers. Golden State hit 27 and Dallas made 21. The Mavs lead all-time 94-84.
Why Bet on Golden State?
The Warriors are 2-0 since All-Star Jimmy Butler joined the starting lineup after a trade from Miami. They looked great on Monday in a 125-111 win in Milwaukee to get back over .500. Golden State had a season-high 16 steals and ended up with 17 more field-goal attempts than the Bucks.
Butler scored the final six points of the third quarter to give the Warriors an 89-83 advantage heading into the final period. Golden State stayed in front the rest of the way. Butler finished with 20 points, nine rebounds, six assists and four steals. The 35-year-old has also been living at the free-throw line since being sent west by the Heat, going 23-for-28 in his first two games for his new club.
Butler III has gotten to the free throw line at least 13 times in his first two games as a Warrior, joining Wilt Chamberlain as the only Warriors to make at least 13 trips to the free throw line in their first two games with the franchise (Chamberlain did so in his first three games. Prior to Butler III, the last Warriors player to attempt at least 13 free throws in consecutive games was Kevin Durant on Nov. 24 and 26, 2018.
“I’m most impressed with his passing,” Coach Steve Kerr said. “His passing changes everything. The skill, the strength, the ability to get to the free throw line. And in the end, it goes beyond that. Just his presence out there.”
Steph Curry dominated with 38 points, six rebounds and four assists. Curry became the 151st player in NBA history to play in 1,000 regular season games, and the 18th to record that many with one franchise. With his fourth-consecutive 30-point game, Curry joined LeBron James (four times), Michael Jordan and Karl Malone as the only players after age 36 to have that many consecutive 30-point games. Over those past four games, Curry is averaging 35.3 points, 6.5 threes, 5.3 assists and 4.5 boards. Butler and Curry could propel Golden State out of the Play-In Tournament range.
The Warriors’ new core features three Hall of Famers in their mid-30s: Curry (36), Butler (35) and Draymond Green (34). With $287 million owed to those players after this season, Golden State has the most money committed to players in their age-35 seasons and beyond in the league.
Making his sixth start of the season but only his second since Nov. 6, Moses Moody made his mark at both ends of the court with 13 points, three rebounds and three steals. Warriors coach Steve Kerr is still determining what his best lineup will look like with Butler on the roster — Quinten Post got the start Saturday instead of Moody in Butler’s debut — so the two younger players may continue to bounce between the first and second units until Kerr finds a rotation he likes. Moody has scored double digits in 11 of his last 13 appearances while averaging 12.2 points in that span.
Wednesday is the penultimate and fifth game on this current six-game road trip (Warriors 2-2) as the Warriors are in a stretch of playing 12 of 14 games on the road. The Warriors have two six-game road trips this season, another in late March. It’s the first game of the Warriors’ 10th set of back-to-backs this season. The Warriors are 6-3 in the first game of back-to-backs.
The Warriors have played in 32 clutch games this season, tied with Houston for the second-most in the NBA, behind Minnesota (33). Clutch games are games in which the score is within five in the final five minutes of the game. Golden State has a 16-16 record in clutch games.
^Why Bet on Dallas?
As if the Luka Doncic deal to the Lakers already didn’t look bad enough, now the big return for the Mavs, Anthony Davis, is expected to sit out multiple weeks because of a left adductor strain. His absence could stretch to a month because of an injury that cut short his terrific debut with his new franchise. Davis exited Saturday’s win over the Houston Rockets with 1:37 left in the third quarter after recording 26 points, 16 rebounds, 7 assists and 3 blocks in 31 minutes.
The 31-year-old All-Star downplayed concern about the injury postgame, saying he was “very confident” that it was not a significant setback. Davis sat out the previous five games — his final three with the Lakers and first two with the Mavs — because of an abdominal strain. But he was ruled out Monday and now may not return before March.
Dallas had a two-game winning streak snapped Monday in its 129-128 OT home loss to the Kings. DeMar DeRozan scored a season-high 42 points, including a baseline floater with 2 seconds left in overtime, to win it. The Mavericks lost center Daniel Gafford to a sprained right knee after he had a knee-to-knee collision with the Kings’ Monk early in the second quarter. Dallas already was playing without power forwards Davis and P.J. Washington, and centers Dereck Lively II and Dwight Powell — all because of injuries. Gafford seems likely to sit Wednesday.
“I’ve been through it,” coach Jason Kidd said. “My job is to tell guys that you got to keep pushing forward, and that’s what this group has done. Through injuries, through trades this past week, the train doesn’t stop. The games keep coming. No one feels sorry for us. That’s just the way the league is. For us to pout, or we want to take our ball and go home, it doesn’t work in this league. You got to fight, and our group is fighting.”
Kyrie Irving logged 44 minutes in Monday’s loss and had a full line with 30 points, nine rebounds, seven assists and three steals – and was named to the West All-Star team as Davis’ replacement on Monday. Klay Thompson finished with 19 points and five 3-pointers in 26 minutes. Thompson’s three-pointer with 10 seconds remaining gave Dallas a one-point lead, but it was short-lived thanks to DeRozan. With the Mavs so thin up front, they were outrebounded 50-33 by the Kings, who had an 18-5 edge in second-chance points.
“Our front line is banged up right now,” said Thompson. “We got to do everything within our power to hold it down while they get healthy, because they’re such a huge part of our team. We’re not obviously the same without our front line, who I think is one of the best in the NBA. It sucks that Daniel went down. He’s such a huge part of what we do, and we’re going to be there to support him and do the best we can to win these next two games before a much-needed break.”
Max Christie added 15 points, four rebounds and three assists on Monday. Since being acquired by Dallas as part of the Doncic/Davis deal, Christie is averaging 17.0 points, 5.3 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 2.8 three-pointers in 32.3 minutes per contest.
As for Wednesday, the Mavericks have won four of the last six meetings against the Warriors, and six of the last seven in Dallas, including the last two.
