While the conference tournaments in college football all basically have the same format, they are all a little different based on the number of teams involved. For this piece, we are focusing on the ACC, where the top 4 teams in the regular season are automatically placed in the quarterfinals. Seeds 10 through 15 will start in the opening round on Tuesday, before moving on to join the 5 through 9 seeds, although we do already know one of the second-round matchups. Now that we understand the format of the ACC Conference Tournament, let’s dig a little deeper to see if we can find out the winner so you can bet against the NCAA Conference Tournament Odds.
ACC Men’s Basketball Tournament Championship Betting Analysis and Predictions
Round 1 Matchups
It’s not particularly likely that any of the opening round teams will go on and win this thing, but the setup is such that a team can get on a roll before tackling the higher seeded teams, who will have had a few days off before starting the quarterfinals. That in itself sets up the potential for upsets.
The tournament begins with #12 Pitt and #13 Boston College squaring off on Tuesday afternoon. These two split the regular season series, with each team winning on home court. Maybe a slight edge to BC in this one.
Next up is #10 Clemson versus #15 NC State, with the Tigers winning the lone regular season meeting on the road. They should be favorites here and should move on to the next round.
The final game in the opening round of the ACC Tournament sees #11 Louisville square off against the defending champions in #14 Georgia Tech. No repeat for the Yellow Jackets here, as I think they are done in Round 1.
Favorites to Win
Duke comes in as the #1 seed for the ACC Tournament, so it is perhaps no real surprise that they are the favorites to win it at odds of +176. Duke, though, are coming off a loss to UNC in their final home game of the regular season, so perhaps they are not the slam dunk some might think they are. I have a feeling, though, that they are going to ramp things up a notch as they look to give Coach K a proper send off in his final season.
In terms of potential challengers to Duke, the bookies have Wake Forest (+610), Notre Dame (+610), and UNC (+690) as the teams most likely to spring the upset. The Blue Devils and the Demon Deacons could potentially meet in the semi-final, with UNC having a bit of a clearer path to the tournament final, if such a thing really exists.
So, with all of this in mind, is there a team that could make a bit of an unexpected run at a tasty price? I’m looking at the Virginia Tech Hokies (+910), as they have what looks to be a manageable second-round game against either Clemson or NC State, both of which you would like them to win. Things would get tougher after that, but I still think that the Hokies have the potential to make some noise in this tournament, although I still have the feeling that we are looking at a big year for Duke in this tournament and beyond.
