Arkansas and former Southwest Conference rival Texas Tech have met on 80 previous occasions, and both teams have won 40 games in the series.

The Red Raiders lead 6-5 in games played on neutral courts. However, Arkansas is 1-0 versus Texas Tech in NCAA Tourney games and has won 10 of the past 13 meetings overall.

They last met in the second round of the 2021 NCAA Tournament in Indianapolis, and the Hogs won 68-66.

John Calipari

Hall of Fame coach Calipari is 1-0 vs. Texas Tech in his career, coming with Kentucky. He has become just the second coach to take four schools to the Sweet 16, joining Lon Kruger (Florida, Kansas State, Oklahoma, UNLV). Calipari previously took UMass, Memphis and Kentucky.

Calipari’s team has reached this stage for the first time since 2019, when Kentucky lost to Auburn in the Elite Eight. Since the canceled 2020 tournament, they faced missed opportunities and early exits, including a shocking loss to St. Peter’s.

To win the West Region, Arkansas is a +850 longshot with Texas Tech at +320. Florida is the -130 favorite and the team I fully expect to reach the Final Four.

Razorbacks Ousted Lone No. 2 Seed Thus Far

The only No. 2 seed not in the NCAA Tournament’s Sweet 16 is Big East regular-season and tournament champion St. John’s, which was upset by No. 10 Arkansas 75-66 in the Round of 32 on Saturday to advance to the program’s 15th Sweet 16.

Game Review

The Razorbacks and Red Storm battled fiercely, amassing 44 fouls, 25 in the second half. Arkansas led for over 34 minutes, fending off St. John’s late rally to cut the deficit to two points. A crucial 7-0 first-half run and an 11-2 start to the second half helped Arkansas secure the win, aided by a Billy Richmond III jumper.

Richmond led Arkansas and tied his career highs with nine rebounds and 16 points as one of three players in double digits, fellow freshman Karter Knox added 15 points with a career-high four blocked shots and Johnell Davis added 13 points. Knox went 9-for-11 from the free throw line to go with six boards.

The Hogs recorded seven blocked shots, equaling the second-most by a Razorback squad in NCAA Tournament history. Knox added four rejections. Arkansas improved to 52-35 overall in Tourney play. John Calipari became the fourth coach to defeat Hall of Fame coaches consecutively in NCAA Tournament history.

Arkansas is just the second team in the shot clock era to reach the Sweet 16 after starting 0-5 in conference play. It is 8-6 in NCAA Sweet 16 games.

Arkansas vs. Texas Tech Expert Prediction

The Razorbacks got star freshman guard Boogie Fland back from a long injury absence to start this tournament – he has come off the bench with six points in each game, but was on the floor in crucial moments during both wins. – and big man Adou Thiero is expected to return from his own injury issue on Thursday.

Adou Thiero

Thiero, sidelined for eight games with a knee injury since Feb. 22, averages 15.6 points and 6 rebounds per game. His return would bolster Arkansas’ rotation and provide a strong driving option, and defensively, he ranks highly in blocks and steals.

Texas Tech leads Big 12 with 1.70 assist-to-turnover ratio (6th nationally) and is second among Big 12 schools by scoring 80.9 ppg, shooting 37.4% on 3s and making 10.3 3-pointers per game. Tech has made 10 or more 3-pointers in a program-record 21 games this season.

Big 12 Player of the Year JT Toppin leads Tech with 18.1 points, 9.3 rebounds, and 17 double-doubles. Guard Elijah Hawkins boasts a 3.40 assist-to-turnover ratio, ranking fifth nationally with 214 assists and 9.4 points per game.

Grant McCasland has led the Red Raiders to the NCAA Tournament in each of his first two seasons, and is in the national tournament for the third time in his career as a head coach. His 50-19 record at Tech is the best start for a head coach in program history. Texas Tech 77, Arkansas 73.
