Last Meeting

The teams met just once last season and Clemson lost 78-74 to Miami when the Canes were ranked No. 23 nationally and the Tigers No. 20. Nijel Pack scored 20 points, Isaiah Wong had 15 and the Hurricanes held on after opening a 12-point lead in the second half. Wong and Pack each hit 3-pointers right after halftime for the Hurricanes, who used a 21-9 run to open a 56-44 lead with 11:10 to play. The Tigers sliced the deficit to 76-74 on Alex Hemenway’s 3-pointer with 0.9 seconds to play. Pack was fouled on the inbounds and calmly made two foul shots to finish off the victory. PJ Hall had 17 of his team-high 19 points in the second half for the Tigers.

This will be the 34th overall meeting between Miami and Clemson and 27th since the Hurricanes joined the ACC ahead of the 2004-05 season. Clemson holds the narrow 17-16 edge in the all-time series, but Miami boasts a 9-4 record when playing at home.

Why Bet on Clemson Tigers?

No. 16 Clemson (11-1) has only lost at Memphis. The Tigers come off a 93-58 win over Radford on Friday. Clemson got off to a hot start and ended up with a 49-point first half and a 26-point advantage after the opening stanza. The Tigers added their second 70.0 percent shooting half in the last two games after shooting 70.4 percent in the final period to rout the Highlanders. Nine Tigers hit the scoring column, and for the 12th-straight game, Clemson produced more assists than turnovers (14-13). Clemson outrebounded Radford by 32 (45-13). The +32 rebound margin tied for fourth all-time in a game in program history.

The Tigers were led by Joseph Girard III, who finished with 24 points on 8-for-11 shooting, including four triples. He moved into fifth all-time in ACC history in 3-pointers (335). Girard also finished with four rebounds and three assists. PJ Hall (17) and Chase Hunter (16) combined for 33 points, while Hunter led the game with five assists. RJ Godfrey also tallied double-figures, finishing with 10 points. For the seventh time this season, Ian Schieffelin grabbed 10+ rebounds and finished with 13.

Clemson is ranked No. 12 in the nation in the latest NET rankings. It is 3-1 in Quad 1 games and stands as the only ACC team with three Quad 1 wins. Three Quad 1 wins are tied for third-most in the country. Clemson has five combined Quad 1 and Quad 2 victories – the most in the ACC and tied for fourth-most in the country. The Tigers are No. 2 in RPI and has the No. 8 strength of schedule in the country.

One of the reasons for Clemson’s 11-1 start has been excellence when it comes to assist/turnover ratio. The Tigers have had more assists than turnovers in every game. Their streak of 12 consecutive games with more assists than turnovers is the longest for a Clemson team since the 1982-83 season when then Coach Bill Foster’s Tigers had a streak of 13 consecutive games. The Tigers currently have an assist-to-turnover ratio of 1.73 ratio. That is ahead of the Clemson single season record of 1.48 set during the 1980-81 season. Clemson is averaging 17.9 assists per game, the most on a per game basis since the 1989-90 Clemson team averaged 17.2 per contest.

Coach Brad Brownell has led the Tigers to the sixth-most overall wins amongst ACC teams since 2017-18. The Tigers have won 62 games in the league, which ranks fifth in that same time frame. Clemson is led in scoring by Hall, who is averaging 20.5 points per game, good for second in the ACC. This year’s club benefits from four transfers who have played a combined 393 college basketball games over 14 seasons of experience.

Why Bet on Miami Hurricanes?

Miami (10-2) probably should be ranked but both its losses were of the blowout variety. The Canes come off a 95-55 blowout victory over North Florida on Friday. Fourth-year junior Norchad Omier (27 points, 10 rebounds), junior Matthew Cleveland (15 points, 10 rebounds) and junior Bensley Joseph (11 points, 10 assists) all recorded double-doubles in the game.

vs La Salle – W84-77

It was the first time since the program’s rebirth in 1985-86 that UM had three players with double-doubles. Miami is one of three DI teams to have three players tally a double-double in the same game against a DI opponent this year. They are joined by Illinois (12/29 vs. FDU) and Iowa (12/20 vs. UMBC).

Omier totaled 27 points on 11-of-12 shooting to eclipse the 1,500-point mark in his career. He is one of three active Division I players to record 1,500 career points and 1,000 career rebounds. Joseph, who tallied his first career double-double against North Florida, is just the fourth Hurricane since 2010 to record 10-plus points and 10-plus assists in a game, joining Isaiah Wong (2022), Bruce Brown (2017, 2016) and Angel Rodriguez (2016). Sophomore Christian Watson and freshman Kyshawn George also scored in double-figures, pouring in 14 and 10 points, respectively.

“I was very pleased with our effort, both offensively and defensively,” head coach Jim Larrañaga said. “I’d like us to keep improving in that area, but really concentrating on reducing our turnovers.” Miami is 5-0 all-time under Coach L in games decided by at least 40 points.

Miami is the only team in the nation with three players averaging 10.0 points and 5.0 rebounds per game: Wooga Poplar (16.2 ppg, 5.2 rpg, 52.3%), Omier (17.6 ppg, 9.8 rpg, 62.6%) and Cleveland (14.9 ppg, 5.4 rpg, 55.6%). Omier ranks first in the AFCC with six double-doubles. The Hurricanes are 21-1 (.952) when Omier has a double-double since he joined the team (2022-23).

Miami has scored at least 90 points on five occasions this year, marking the 22nd time a Miami team has done it at least five times in a given year. The record for most such games in a season is a whopping 16 set in 1988-89.

The Canes hold a winning record in the first game of a calendar year, posting a 38-26 all-time mark. When playing at home, Miami is 28-14. The Hurricanes and Clemson met on Jan. 2, 2021, with the Tigers defeating the Hurricanes 66-65 in the Watsco Center. The Hurricanes are 149-49 (.750) at the Watsco Center during Larrañaga’s tenure.

Do note that Poplar and Pack, two of the key Canes, are both in some question Wednesday with minor injuries as both are being called day-to-day.
