VCU vs #25 Dayton Last Meeting

On Feb. 9, these teams played one of the most defensive games of the season nationally with VCU beating visiting Dayton 49-47. The Rams didn’t score for the final six minutes and Dayton didn’t in the final 3:03. VCU went ahead 49-42 on a tip-in by Toibu Lawal with six minutes left, but attempted just four shots from the field the rest of the way. Jason Nelson led VCU, which never trailed after the opening minutes, with 11 points. Nate Santos led the Flyers with 19 points and star DaRon Holmes scored 12. VCU leads the series 18-9.

Why Bet on VCU Rams?

VCU (19-11, 11-6 A-10) sits fourth in the Atlantic 10 entering the season finale. The Rams played without leading scorer Max Shulga due to injury on Tuesday and were upset at home by Duquesne, 69-59.

Sean Bairstow converted in the paint early in the second half to give VCU a 41-38 advantage and help the Rams erase a four-point deficit at halftime. The Dukes stemmed the tide with an 8-0 run to grab a 46-41 lead, as senior guard Jimmy Clark III tied the game with a three-pointer, forward David Dixon provided a dunk and senior guard Dae Dae Grant added a triple of his own to propel Duquesne.

VCU closed to within 46-44, but the Dukes answered again, getting a three-point play from forward Jakub Necas, a layup in transition from forward Matúŝ Hronský and a dunk from forward Fousseyni Drame to extend their lead to 53-44. The Rams called timeout after the flush from Drame, but two more triples from Grant and another from Clark III helped keep VCU at bay. The Dukes owned a 33-31 rebounding advantage and knocked down 11-of-12 free throw attempts.

Senior guard Joe Bamisile led VCU with 18 points and knocked down 4-of-9 from beyond the 3-point line. Bamisile confirmed following the game that he will be using his optional “COVID year” of eligibility to return to VCU for his fifth year of college basketball. Sophomore forward Tobi Lawal added 11 points off the bench and added five rebounds on the night for the Rams. Senior guard Zeb Jackson also provided 10 points, five rebounds and three steals.

In pregame, Shulga was ruled out due to back spasms, missing his first game of the season on Senior Night. The Ukrainian guard, who passed 1,000 career collegiate points on Feb. 28 against Rhode Island, is VCU’s leading scorer with 15 points per game. With Shulga out, redshirt freshman Fats Billups got significant run as a reserve point guard spelling Jason Nelson, who was elevated to the starting lineup in Shulga’s absence. Shulga is questionable for this one.

VCU’s bench has become one of its greatest strengths. The Rams rank 47th nationally in bench minutes, and the Black and Gold receive an average of 27.9 points per game from its reserves. VCU’s bench has scored 30 or more points in 16 games this year.

The Rams rank 13th nationally in effective field goal defense (.461). They have assisted on 58.5 percent of their field goals, which is VCU’s highest rate since the 2010-11 campaign, when the Rams assisted on 60.2 percent of buckets. VCU is also shooting .793 at this line this year, which ranks seventh nationally. VCU’s +3.2 rebounding margin is its largest since 2003-04, when the Rams were +4.5. The Rams lead the A-10 in 3-point shooting (.387) and is third 3-point defense (.310) in league contests.

With a win Friday, VCU would clinch the four seed and a double bye in the Atlantic 10 Tournament. VCU has clamped down on defense following an 0-2 start to A-10 play. In the past 15 games, 11 of them victories, VCU opponents averaged 64.7 points, while shooting .400 from the field and .287 from three.

Why Bet on Dayton Flyers?

Dayton (23-6, 13-4) is third in the A-10 and can’t slip to fourth but could get to second. The Flyers snapped a three-game road losing streak on Tuesday with a 100-83 win at Saint Louis. Dayton made a Chaifetz Arena record 18 3-pointers and matched the school record for 3s, set earlier this season in a win over Oakland.

@ George Mason – L71-67

That helped overcome Saint Louis shooting 50.8 percent (31-of-61) from the field and 93.8 percent (15-of-16) from the foul line. Kellen Thames scored eight points, including a pair of three-point plays, in a 19-8 Saint Louis surge that whittled Dayton’s 25-point lead to 80-66 with 6:37 remaining. However, the Billikens drew no closer.

“Great to see the ball go in,” Flyers coach Anthony Grant said. “I think we’ve got guys that are really good shooters, and it’s basketball. Some nights, your shots are going to fall and the shots fell tonight. We hit some tough ones.”

It was Dayton’s first 100-point game since Jan. 12, 2018, when UD beat VCU 106-79. The Flyers outscored the Billikens 22-6 in second-chance points. UD shot 54.5% (18-33) from beyond the arc, the eighth time this season hitting at least 50%.

DaRon Holmes II led all scorers with 25 points (along with 13 rebounds and five assists). He leads the A-10 in scoring (20.1) and UD in rebounding (8.2) and is the only player in the league’s top six in scoring, rebounding, FG%, and blocked shots. After making just seven three-pointers in his first two seasons (and shooting .269 from deep), Holmes has made 29 this season and is shooting .387 from beyond the arc.

Holmes has improved his FT% from .586 to .669 to .695 this season, while shooting more free throws every season. He has 28 more free throws made in one less game than anyone else in the A-10. He has been named one of five 2024 Karl Malone Power Forward of the Year finalists along with Kyle Filipowski (Duke), Enrique Freeman (Akron), Jaedon Lee (San Diego State) and Great Osobor (Utah State).

Koby Brea and Kobe Elvis had 21 in Tuesday’s win. Enoch Cheeks also had a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Nate Santos added 10. Dayton played without point guard Javon Bennett, who missed the game with an injured left hand. Consider him questionable here. Bennett leads the A-10 in assist-to-turnover ratio (3.4) by nearly a full assist (2.7).

Dayton will be in the NCAA Tournament no matter what happens in this game or in the Atlantic 10 Tournament. ESPN currently has the Flyers as a No. 7 seed and opening the Dance vs. No. 10 Oklahoma in the Midwest Region. Grant has been mentioned as a possible replacement for the fired Chris Holtmann at Ohio State.

Dayton vs VCU Series History

This is the first of two scheduled meetings with the teams set to close the regular season against one another in Dayton – and of course they could meet in the A-10 Tournament. Last year, VCU won two of three as they did meet in the conference tournament final and the Rams won 68-56 to earn the automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. VCU held Dayton to six points and no field goals over the final 10:12. The Flyers’ DaRon Holmes had 28 points and 16 rebounds, but didn’t get enough help in the second half. He’s still with the team. Rather strangely, Dayton has beaten VCU in its last two trips to the Siegel Center, while VCU is 3-0 in its last three games against the Flyers at UD Arena.

Why Bet on Dayton Flyers?

Dayton (19-3, 9-1 A-10) won its third game in a row Tuesday, 94-79 at a good Saint Joseph’s team. The Hawks took a 38-34 lead into the second half, but the Flyers quickly erased it as the visitors opened the half on a 27-6 run with a layup by Nate Santos making it 61-44 in favor of Dayton. Saint Joseph’s fought back, but the Flyers kept the Hawks at a distance, allowing them to get no closer than 10 points.

UD’s 60 second-half points were the most scored after halftime by the Flyers since 63 against Central Connecticut State on Dec. 27, 1993 (Dayton scored 66 in the first half against VCU on Jan. 12, 2018.). It was the most points St. Joe’s has allowed in a half all season.

“We’ve played a lot of good teams this year,” Saint Joseph’s coach Billy Lange said. “They’re as good a team as we’ve played.”

All five Flyer starters scored in double figures for the first time this season. Kobe Elvis and Nate Santos each led all scorers with 21 points, the second time this season two Flyers scored at least 20. Javon Bennett had 18, DaRon Holmes II had 13 and Enoch Cheeks added 12. Elvis, who was 8-for-13 from deep, added a career-high 10 assists for his first career double-double.

“He did a great job sharing it, did a great job being aggressive, did a great job in terms of understanding defensively the assignment and making it difficult for those guys,” Dayton coach Anthony Grant said of Elvis.

The Flyers climbed one spot to No. 16 in the NCAA Evaluation Tool with their third straight victory and moved into first place in the A-10 by a half game over Richmond.

Holmes is on three prestigious preseason watch lists — A Naismith Award, Wooden Award and the Karl Malone Award. Holmes leads the A-10 in scoring (19.7) and UD in rebounding (7.6). He is the only player in the league’s Top 10 in scoring, rebounding, FG%, and blocked shots. He is the only player in D-I who has more than 50 blocks, 50 dunks and 50 assists. Holmes has 50, 51 and 56 respectively. No other player even has 40. Holmes also has 22 threes and is shooting .386 (22-57) from deep. He had a total of seven threes in his first two years at UD.

Koby Brea leads the nation in three-point shooting (minimum 2.5 attempts per game) at 48.4%. As a team, Dayton is fifth in D-I in 3-pt. FG% (.400, 210-525). The school record is .392. Brea is fourth at UD in career 3-pt. FG% (.418, 183-438). Bennett is second in the A-10 in assist-to-turnover ratio (2.9) and leads UD in steals (28).

Why Bet on VCU Rams?

VCU (15-8, 7-3 A-10) won its second game in a row Tuesday, 75-60 at Fordham. VCU trailed by just a point at the break, 32-31, thanks to a Will Richardson jumper just before the halftime buzzer, VCU scored the first nine points of the second half to take a 41-31 lead 3:44 into the period. A Japhet Medor jumper with 15:49 on the clock halted the VCU run and Fordham trailed by eight again with 14:44 remaining, 43-35, following an Abdou Tsimbila dunk but the visitors netted nine unanswered points to take a commanding 52-35 lead midway through the second half. The closest Fordham would get the rest of the way was 12, 54-52, on a Medor three with 5:31 left.

Fordham committed just four turnovers in the first half but had eleven in the second. The game featured players on two extremes of college basketball with Fordham’s Kyle Rose in his fifth year with the Rams while VCU’s Joe Bamisile is playing for his fourth different team over the past four years. VCU’s roster features eight newcomers, seven of them transfers as the Rams had to replace their top seven scorers from their 2022-23 A-10 Championship team.

“They were certainly the aggressor early,” VCU coach Ryan Odom said of Fordham. “But our guys responded in a positive way, kind of settled into the game. We were able to regroup (at halftime), and our guys did a better job of taking care of the ball, a better job defending the 3-point line and drives to the basket, and certainly a better job rebounding. To be able to finish the game the way that we did was a positive.”

Rams guard Max Shulga filled up the box score with 13 points, 10 rebounds, seven assists and a steal on the way to his fifth career double-double. He connected on 3-of-5 attempts from beyond the 3-point arc in the contest Bamisile added 13 points and knocked down 3-of-5 from beyond the arc. Transfer Sean Bairstow, who missed the past two games with a rib injury, returned to the VCU lineup and provided 12 points, eight rebounds and a pair of assists.

Bairstow said protecting the ball was a key point of the halftime conversations. VCU committed just four second-half turnovers.

“That’s something we’ve been good at throughout the year,” Bairstow said. “If we have kind of a blaah half, we’re able to contain it in the second half. I think it was just getting accustomed to what they were doing, they were reaching (in) a lot. So just being more conscious of that.”

VCU has clamped down on defense following an 0-2 start to A-10 play. In the past eight games, seven of them victories, VCU opponents averaged 60.0 points, while shooting .365 from the field and .190 from 3-point range. The Rams rank sixth nationally in effective field goal defense (.445)… VCU is also shooting.

Offensively, they have assisted on 58.2 percent of their field goals, which is VCU’s highest rate since the 2010-11 campaign, when the Rams assisted on 60.2 percent of buckets. VCU currently leads the A-10 in 3-point shooting (.402) in conference games, as well as 3-point defense (.269) in league contests. The team’s +2.9 rebounding margin overall is its largest since 2003-04.
