Difference between Top 25 AP and Top 25 Coaches Poll NCAAB Rankings: Why?

Written by on January 26, 2021

The Associated Press Top 25 in college basketball is voted on by media members, while the Coaches Poll is obviously voted on by the coaches – although in all honesty a lot of coaches just hand off that chore to someone else in the athletic department. The top seven in both polls this week are the same: Gonzaga, Baylor, Villanova, Michigan, Texas, Houston and Iowa.

The first difference is at No. 8 as the AP has Virginia there with Alabama at No. 9. The Coaches Poll has the Tide and Cavs tied at eighth.

Could Bama become the rare school to win a football and basketball national title in the same season? Nate Oats has done a fantastic job with the hoops program and has been a terrific recruiter. He has one of the SEC’s top freshmen in Joshua Primo. On Monday, he was named the SEC Freshman of the Week for last week.

Primo helped lead Alabama to wins at LSU and vs. Mississippi State last week, extending the Tide’s winning streak to nine games – the longest since 2002-03 – and eight straight to start SEC play, which matches the Tide’s second-best start in conference play in program history. He averaged 19.0 points, 5.0 threes made and 3.5 rebounds per game on the week, while shooting 73.7 percent (14-of-19) from the floor and 76.9 percent (10-of-13) from beyond the arc.

Primo joined Jaden Shackelford, who was recognized on Dec. 28, and John Petty Jr., who was tabbed the Player of the Week on Jan. 4 and Jan. 18, as UA players who have been garnered the weekly recognition this year.

The Tide enter Tuesday’s game vs. Kentucky having scored at least 80 points in six straight games. It’s the first time that has happened at the school since opening the 1985-86 season with six-straight 80-point games.

Alabama is one of only five teams across the nation which is ranked in the top-15 in both offensive and defensive efficiency according to KenPom.com (as of 1/25). The Crimson Tide currently rank No. 13 in offensive efficiency and No. 11 in defensive efficiency among the top-20 in the nation in both offensive and defensive efficiency. The Tide are ranked No. 9 in the NCAA NET rankings, which leads all SEC teams.

At 8-0 in league play, Alabama has three more wins than anyone else in the league standings and has outscored its league competition by a combined +134 points. The next closest team is Florida, who has outscored its league competition by a combined +32 points.

The AP ranks Oklahoma 24th this week but the Coaches Poll doesn’t have the Sooners ranked. The Sooners have a big one at No. 5 Texas on Tuesday.

The Coaches have Oregon ranked 25th but the AP doesn’t have the Ducks ranked. On Saturday, Oregon returned from a two-week COVID layoff and was upset 75-64 at home by Oregon State ending the Ducks’ 28-game home winning streak.

With leading scorer Chris Duarte and starting swingman LJ Figueroa watching from the bench in street clothes, the Ducks struggled to solve OSU’s defense. More than half Oregon’s field-goal attempts — 29 out of 54 — were from three-point range, and the Ducks shot 38.9 percent overall. Oregon also was badly outrebounded, 42-23, including on its own end, where the Ducks had just five offensive boards.

The biggest riser in both polls this week was Florida State, which is up 10 spots to No. 16 in the AP and up nine also to No. 16 in the Coaches Poll. Freshman Scottie Barnes, the Seminoles’ leader in assists and steals, has been named as one of the Top 10 candidates for the Bob Cousy Point Guard of the Year Award by the Nasimith Basketball Hall of Fame. Barnes is one of three freshmen from around the nation and one of only two players from the ACC selected as one of the top candidates for the award named for former Boston College and Holy Cross guard Bob Cousy.

Barnes enters Wednesday’s game against Miami as Florida State’s’ leader in assists (40 / 4.0 apg) and steals (14 / 1.4 spg) while ranking second in scoring (10.6 ppg) and fourth in rebounding (40 / 4.0 rpg). He ranks fifth in the ACC in assist:turnover ratio (2.1:1) and seventh in the ACC in assists. Barnes is the highest rated recruit in Florida State history. He was the No. 5 overall ranked and No. 1 ranked power forward in the 2020 recruiting class.
