#10 Duke vs. NC State NCAAB Betting Lines, Analysis & Predictions in the only confrontation between the two Schools

No. 10 Duke still has a shot to at least share the ACC regular-season title but almost surely not if the Blue Devils are upset on Monday night at NCAA Tournament bubble team and unranked NC State. The Dukies are solid favorites on the NCAAB odds.

#10 Duke vs. NC State Last Meeting

This is the only scheduled meeting of the season between the schools. Last year, they split two matchups. The one in Raleigh was an 84-60 rout by NC State when the Wolfpack were unranked and Duke was No. 16 so not much different than Monday. A strong start from the Wolfpack held Duke scoreless for more than seven minutes to open the game, as the Blue Devils started 0-for-12 from the field and would not tally their first points until the 12:20 mark in the first half. After starting the contest on a 15-0 run, NC State’s lead grew to 22-4 and the game was really over. Duke turned the ball over 21 times overall and the Wolfpack turned them into 30 points. It was the largest margin of victory for an unranked ACC team over a ranked Duke team in Blue Devil history.

Why Bet on Duke Blue Devils?

No. 10 Duke (23-6, 14-4 ACC) kept its ACC title hopes alive with a 73-48 blowout win over Virginia on Saturday. The Blue Devils shot 59% before halftime to lead by 25 points before the break and it was over. Virginia came in with KenPom’s ninth-ranked defense by allowing 94 points per 100 possessions, while also allowing an average of 24.7 points in the paint during league play. But Duke had 44 points in the paint, the most allowed by Virginia all season. Duke held the Cavaliers to 23.1% shooting from the field in the opening 20 minutes, representing the lowest first-half shooting percentage by an opponent this season.

“They got the ball in the lane, on the floor, on the glass, every which way,” Virginia coach Tony Bennett said, adding: “They pretty much got what they wanted in the first half. It was a mismatch (inside).”

Duke’s Kyle Filipowski, who led all scorers with 21 points on 9-for-14 shooting, overpowered UVA centers Jordan Minor and Blake Buchanan. The 6-foot-8 Ryan Dunn, who blocked five shots, had more success guarding Filipowski in the second half, but it was a difficult match-up for the Cavaliers. Filipowski’s 20-point performance is his 10th of the season and 16th during his two-year career.

“He’s such a good player,” Dunn said. “I love Flip, but playing against him is a competition. I was just trying to use my speed and my size, just my length, to contest his shots.”

The Blue Devils also received double-digit showings from Tyrese Proctor and Mark Mitchell, who scored 15 and 10, respectively. Duke is now 32-3 all-time when Mitchell scores at least 10 points. Sean Stewart led the team with eight rebounds, including four on the offensive glass. Proctor and Jeremy Roach were co-leaders for assists, with five apiece, and Filipowski swiped three steals on the defensive end.

The Blue Devils’ 25-point margin of victory was the largest in the series with the Cavaliers since a 79-54 Duke triumph at Cameron Indoor Stadium on Feb. 1, 2009, the season before Virginia hired Tony Bennett as head coach. Duke’s defense held Virginia to 48 points, 15.7 points below its season average of 63.7. The Blue Devils have held 25 of their 29 opponents to below their respective scoring average.

Virginia entered the contest as the national leader in fewest turnovers at 8.2 per game. Duke forced the Cavaliers into 12 turnovers on Saturday. Duke won the rebounding battle, 42-29. The Blue Devils are now 18-1 when out-rebounding their opponent. Duke held the lead (40-18) at half, the 22nd such occurrence this season. The Blue Devils are now 21-1 in those games.

Jon Scheyer now has 50 career wins and is the fastest Duke men’s basketball head coach to reach that mark (50-15). Reserve guard Caleb Foster (7.7 ppg) was unavailable due to a lower-leg injury.

Why Bet on NC State Wolfpack?

This is the home finale for NC State (17-12, 9-9 ACC), which lost a second straight game Saturday, 79-70 at No. 9 and ACC-leading North Carolina. The Wolfpack led 45-37 at halftime, buoyed by 57.6% shooting from the floor. That included going 7 for 11 from 3-point distance. State’s 45 points were the most in a first half by a UNC opponent this season.

NC State shot 22.2% in the second half, going 0 for 15 during one stretch. Wolfpack center D.J. Burns Jr. picked up his fourth foul with 11:28 remaining. Less than two minutes later, teammate Casey Morsell had four fouls and then fouled out with 7:41 left. NC State became the first UNC opponent to miss 15 shots in a row since Pittsburgh did it on January 5, 2019.

“I thought we got the best of them in the first half, but obviously they did a really good job in the second half of getting the best of us,” said NCSU head coach Kevin Keatts. “That’s a long stretch where we just didn’t have anything.”

Jayden Taylor led NC State with 22 points. He off the bench to shoot 6-of-10 from the field, including 5-of-7 from three-point range. The five three-pointers are a season-high. Taylor has now led NC State in scoring in back-to-back games after tying his career-high with 24 points last Tuesday night at Florida State. DJ Horne added 20 points as he and Taylor were the only two NC State players to reach double figures.

NC State has 11 wins over ranked opponents in the Kevin Keatts era, including five wins over top-10 ranked opponents. NC State’s last win over a top-10 opponent was Feb. 19, 2020 when the Pack knocked off sixth-ranked Duke, 88-66, inside PNC Arena.

NC State leads the ACC and ranks 30th in the NCAA with an average of 13.8 fast break points per game. NC State is 15-4 this season when it has more fast break points than its opponent, but is just 2-8 when its opponent has more fast break points. In ACC-only games, the Pack are 9-2 when they have more fast break points than its opponent and 0-7 when the opponent has more fast break points.

Grad guard Michael O’Connell leads the ACC in assist/turnover ratio with a 3.11 average. NC State is 13-3 this season when he passes out three or more assists. O’Connell’s assist/turnover ratio is currently the fourth-highest in program history.
