North Texas vs. Wisconsin (+1.5)

When: Tuesday, March 28, at 7:00 pm ET
Where: Orleans Arena, Las Vegas, NV
TV / Streaming: ESPN, ESPN+

North Texas is a Conference USA team but will be moving to the AAC next year. The Mean Green (29-7) advanced with a 65-59 OT win at Oklahoma State last Tuesday. Tylor Perry led all scorers with 23 points and was 6-for-6 from the free throw line. He added five rebounds and one assist in a team-high 43 minutes. Perry hit a deep three-pointer with 1:49 remaining in overtime to give North Texas a 61-58 lead.

Perry became the 25th player in UNT history to hit the 1000 career point mark. Moulaye Sissoko recorded his first career double-double with a personal-best mark of 12 points and 15 rebounds. He finished 6-for-9 from the field and added a steal. UNT captured its 10th NCAA postseason victory under Grant McCasland. Prior to McCasland’s arrival in 2017, the Mean Green had never won an NCAA postseason tournament game. McCasland is expected to leave this job for Texas Tech.

UNT features the nation’s No. 1 scoring defense as they enter Tuesday holding opponents to just 55.7 ppg. Last year they had the nation’s best and C-USA’s greatest ever scoring defense also at 55.7 ppg. UNT has won 13 away/neutral site games, which was tied with Houston for the most in the nation. North Texas has the nation’s most deliberate offense, averaging 21.3 seconds per possession and 58.9 possessions per 40 minutes.

Wisconsin (20-14) beat Oregon 61-58 to advance. Max Klesmit scored 18 points, and Chucky Hepburn made a 3-pointer with 55.4 seconds remaining. Klesmit was 5 of 11 shooting, including 2 for 5 from 3-point range, and went 6 for 7 from the line for the Badgers. Hepburn scored 12 points. Steven Crowl had nine points and 10 rebounds. Trailing 54-48 with 3:28 left, Wisconsin closed on a 13-4 run to rally back and win.

“I think it just shows the perseverance this group has and the ability to stick together when times may not go your way during the game, and be one whole group,” Klesmit said. “And that pays dividends at the end.”

Wisconsin has strung together 3-straight wins for the first-time since going on a 6-game win streak back in December-January of this season. Through three NIT games, Wisconsin has shot 55-for-65 (84.6%) at the free throw line.

Tuesday will be the first ever meeting between North Texas and Wisconsin. The Mean Green are 2-11 all-time versus teams currently in the Big Ten.
