Florida also tries for the season sweep as on Feb. 8, it was a 10-point underdog at Associated Press No. 1 Auburn and upset the Tigers 90-81 to snap their 14-game winning streak at the time.

Gators star Walter Clayton Jr. scored 19 points, with four 3s, and had a career-high nine assists while playing the entire 40 minutes, leading five different UF players into double-figure scoring.

The win, which came with fifth-year guard and second-leading scorer Martin scratched 30 minutes before the game with a hip pointer, marked the first against a No. 1 opponent on the road in team history and came a month after the Gators a top-ranked team, Tennessee, at home for the first time in its history.

UF became just the sixth team of the Associated Press poll era to defeat two different teams ranked No. 1 in the same season.

While Florida shot 13 for 33 from 3-point range, Auburn shot 32% from long distance, finishing 7 for 22. Tigers leading scorer and All-American Johni Broome had 18 points and 11 rebounds, and Miles Kelly had 22 points.

“They came in here like they had to win it. That’s how they played every possession. They played harder, they played better, they played more desperately,” Tigers coach Bruce Pearl said.

Gators Nearly Upset In Elite Eight

Auburn cruised in the tournament, but Florida faced challenges, nearly losing to UConn and trailing against No. 3 seed Texas Tech in the Elite Eight.

However, they made an impressive comeback, winning 84-79. Walter Clayton Jr. stood out, scoring 30 points, including 13 in the last five minutes, leading the Gators to their first Final Four in 11 years.

Walter Clayton Jr.

The only first-team All American in school history hit two crucial 3s in the final minutes, first tying the game, then giving the Gators the lead as they closed the game with an 18-4 run.

Clayton’s two free throws secured the win, earning him the West Region MVP title while averaging 19.8 points across four games with impressive shooting percentages.

“There’s not another player in America you would rather have right now than Walter Clayton with the ball in his hands in a big-time moment,” UF Coach Todd Golden said.

Backup forward Thomas Haugh was spectacular off the bench, finishing with a double-double of 20 points and 11 rebounds, and threw in two of his four 3-pointers during the comeback.

With just eight minutes to play, UF had just four second-half field goals (on 16 attempts) and had missed all four of its 3-point attempts. Tech led 67-57.

Broome Continues Carrying Auburn

Auburn won its first three games of this tournament easily and wasn’t pushed much harder in the Elite Eight in beating No. 2 Michigan State 70-64.

With 10:37 to play, Tigers All-American Johni Broome sat alone underneath the basket and grabbed his right elbow. On an attempt to block a shot, he appeared to simultaneously land on his left knee and right elbow as he tried to protect himself when he fell.

He walked off the court and into the locker room with Auburn’s training staff, appearing to look at a teammate and say, “I’m done.” But shortly after, Broome checked back into the game.

And with 4:38 to play, he hit a 3-pointer to give Auburn another double-digit lead and basically clinch it.

Broome finished with 25 points and 14 rebounds. It was his fifth career double-double in the NCAA Tournament, which matched Jeff Moore for the most in program history. Broome is averaging 17.3 points and 13.3 rebounds per contest in the tournament.

Bruce Pearl

“Johni Broome stepped up again,” Auburn coach Bruce Pearl said. “Just keep doubting him, and keep thinking that he’s not going to be able to get to another gear. I know what he’s capable of. You talk about delivering again at the biggest moments.”

Johni has averaged a double-double this season – 18.7 points and 10.9 – along with 2.9 assists and 2.1 blocks per game. The SEC Player of the Year might not be 100%, but he’s playing Saturday.

Freshman guard Tahaad Pettiford is averaging 17.3 points in the tournament and has 22 games overall in double figures this season, which is tied with Wesley Person (1990-91) for sixth among Tiger freshmen all-time.

March Madness Final Four: Florida vs. Auburn Expert Prediction

Florida and Auburn meet in the NCAA Tournament for the first time. The Gators have faced another SEC team in the Dance just once before, coming up short vs. South Carolina in the 2017 Elite Eight at Madison Square Garden. One thing perhaps in Auburn’s favor is that Florida has trailed for 44:15 of game time in the NCAA Tournament, and no other team has trailed for more than 28 minutes.

Clayton’s 668 points this season have him eight behind Andy Owens’ 55-year-old Florida single-season record of 676 points, set in the 1969-70 campaign. The Gators now have four double-digit comeback wins on the season after rallying past TTU. UF is now 49-20 all-time in the Dance.

Auburn makes its second Final Four appearance, previously losing 63-62 to Virginia in 2019 on late free throws. This marks the Tigers’ first NCAA Tournament advancement past the Round of 32 since then. Historically, Auburn has a 2-4 record against No. 1 seeds, losing two consecutive games.

The Tigers is now 23-13 all-time in the NCAA Tournament, while Coach Pearl is 21-13 in the Dance all-time and 12-5 with the Tigers. They are 28-1 this season when leading at halftime and the school has totaled 602 assists on the season, joining last year’s squad, which set a program record with 622 assists, as the only teams to record 600 assists in a season in program history. The team’s 32 wins are a school record and for the 13th-most victories in a season in SEC history. Florida 80, Auburn 77.
