The Golden Eagles (4-2) come off a 69-60 loss at UCLA on Friday. D.J. Carton scored 18 points and Dawson Garcia added 12 for the foul-plagued Golden Eagles. The Bruins ran off seven points in a row, making 5 of 6 free throws, to take a 63-56 lead and that was essentially that.

Neither team led by double digits in the game. The second half was a back-and-forth affair, with UCLA outscoring the Eagles 33-26. UCLA’s defense forced Marquette into 18 turnovers in the game and pressured the Eagles’ shooters. The Eagles were held to just two field goals over the final seven minutes of their first road game of the season.

Forward Jamal Cain led the team with seven rebounds in the loss. He is currently 12th in the conference in rebounding with 6.8 boards per game, the second-best average on the roster.

Carton has started each of the last three outings and in those games is contributing 13.0 points, 3.7 rebounds and 3.7 assists per game in just over 30 minutes per night. Carton, who spent the 2019-20 campaign at Ohio State, scored a career-high 19 points against Minnesota on Dec. 15, 2019.  His last game for the Buckeyes came in late January of 2020.

Marquette ranks among the Big East leaders in several defensive categories including scoring defense (2nd, 63.2 ppg.), field goal percentage defense (1st, .354 -14th in nation), 3-point field goal percentage defense (1st, .265) and defensive rebounds (3rd, 30.0 drpg.). It is also third in the conference in blocks per game (4.7).

Marquette averages 74.2 points per game, shooting 43.8 percent from the floor, 35.1 percent from downtown and 72.5 percent at the line. MU wins the rebound battle by 8.2 caroms per contest and holds foes to 63.2 points per outing.

The Bluejays (4-1) beat Nebraska 98-74 on Friday. Creighton scored on 10 straight possessions during a 23-2 run to open up a close game in the second half to beat its in-state rival for the 13th straight regular-season meeting in Omaha. It was Creighton’s largest margin in the series since a 70-44 victory in 2005.

Creighton’s 98 points were its most ever in 54 meetings against NU, eclipsing the 95 scored a year ago in a 95-76 triumph. The game-deciding run saw Creighton’s lead escalate from 55-51 with 14:16 left into a 78-53 margin with 9:23 remaining. Each of CU’s first seven baskets in that spurt came from a different player.

Star Marcus Zegarowski finished with 22 points and Denzel Mahoney 20 while becoming the first Bluejays to crack the 20-point barrier this season. They were joined in double-figures by Ryan Kalkbrenner (13), Damien Jefferson (11) and Christian Bishop (10). Kalkbrenner added eight rebounds and blocked three shots in 18 minutes of action.

CU shot 52.1 percent from the floor (38-73), including 14-of-30 three-pointers (46.7 percent), and sank 8-of-13 foul shots (61.5 percent). Creighton has won 11 straight home games, with the last 10 by double-figures. The school improved to 124-47 all-time as a nationally-ranked team, including a 90-35 mark under Coach Greg McDermott.

Zegarowski (15.0 ppg., 6.0 apg.) has been named Preseason Big East Player of the Year and is a Preseason All-American by nearly every outlet after averaging 16.1 points and 5.1 assists per game last season.  Mahoney (15.0 ppg.) won the Big East’s Sixth Man Award last season and is off to a terrific start.

Creighton is shooting 51.3 percent from the field, scoring 85.2 points per game and holding foes to 66.0 points per contest.
