Florida is vying for its sixth Final Four appearance in school history and first since 2014. Maryland is +450 to win the West and +3200 to win its first title since 2002.
This game in San Francisco will be a homecoming for 39-year-old Florida coach Todd Golden to Northern California.
Golden played at Saint Mary’s College (2004-08) in nearby Moraga and returned to the Bay Area to coach at San Francisco (2016-22), first as an assistant and then as the head coach for three seasons.
He is inviting those closest to him to Florida’s practice Tuesday and/or walkthrough Wednesday on San Francisco’s campus.
The Gators are leaving Gainesville early Tuesday and trying to take advantage of the time difference to practice on the West Coast for a couple of days.
Florida and Maryland have split four meetings all-time and haven’t played since Dec. 12, 2021, when Maryland won 70-68 at a neutral site in Brooklyn during the Hall of Fame Invitational at Barclays Center.
The Gators have not played a Big Ten team this season, and the Terps haven’t played an SEC team.
^Terps Have Had Easy Road
Maryland routed No. 13 seed Grand Canyon 81-49 in Round 1 but needed an epic fade away off-the-glass buzzer-beater from star freshman center Derik Queen to oust No. 12 seed Colorado State, 72-71, in the Sweet 16 on Sunday. Queen became only the fourth freshman to hit a buzzer-beating game winner in the NCAA men’s tournament since the field expanded to 64 teams in 1985.
Queen’s winning shot was the game’s 15th lead change. That’s tied for the second most in any game in the past two NCAA Tournaments. The last game-winning buzzer-beater in an NCAA Tournament game was in the 2023 Final Four by San Diego State‘s Lamont Butler to advance the Aztecs to the title game. Queen finished with a team-high 17 points to go along with six rebounds and two blocks. His game-winner occurred out of a timeout with just three seconds left to play.
“Sometimes, you can draw something up for a guy that maybe doesn’t want the basketball, and his exact words were, ‘I want the MF ball,'” Coach Kevin Willard said. “So once he said that, it was a pretty simple decision.”
Queen had the game-winner, but it was Julian Reese, Rodney Rice and Selton Miguel who also helped lead Maryland’s comeback effort. The trio combined for 30 of Maryland’s 42 second-half points. Reese knocked down two clutch free throws to put Maryland ahead 70-68 with 22 seconds remaining before CSU took the lead on a 3-pointer to set up Queen’s heroics.
The win improved Maryland to 27-8, the most wins for the program since going 27-9 in 2015-16 – the last time the Terps advanced to the Sweet 16. Before that, Maryland’s previous Sweet 16 appearances came in consecutive years – 2001, 2002, 2003 – on the way to the 2002 National Championship and 2001 Final Four.

Gators On 8-Game Winning Streak
Florida won its eighth game in a row in the Round of 32, but it was easily the toughest of the eight as the Gators had to rally for a 77-75 win over No. 8 seed UConn on Sunday to end the Huskies’ chances of a historic threepeat of national titles.
The top-seeded Gators struggled in the second half but secured victory over the Huskies with a decisive 8-0 run. After a 3-pointer from UConn’s Solo Ball tied the game at 64, Florida’s Alex Condon’s free throw regained the lead. Senior guard Walter Clayton Jr. added two free throws and a 3-pointer, pushing the lead to 70-64. Alijah Martin capped the run with a powerful dunk, solidifying the Gators’ advantage.
For the second consecutive game, Clayton rose to the challenge. He finished with a game-high 23 points, including 5 of 8 from 3-point distance. Florida shot 23 of 50 (46%) overall, compared to UConn’s 38% shooting (24 of 64). The Gators were 9 of 19 from deep, while the Huskies made only 8 of 29.
“We flipped the script in winning time,” Coach Todd Golden said.
Florida is now 12-1 all-time in the Dance as a No. 1 seed. If there’s a weakness for the Gators, it’s free-throw shooting. The Gators have seven players averaging at least 10 minutes per game who shoot worse than 75% from the free-throw line, and they shoot 71.9% from the line as a team, which puts them at about 200th nationally.

Maryland vs. Florida Expert Prediction
Of Florida’s 32 wins, 25 have been by double digits this season. On the four previous occasions that Florida entered the NCAA Tournament off an SEC Tournament title, the Gators twice won the national championship (2006, 2007), once advanced to the national semifinals (2014) and once lost in the second round (2005).
Florida and Duke are the only teams in the nation’s top 10 in both offensive and defensive efficiency. UF ranks as the third-best team in the KenPom rankings, sporting the second-best offense and 11th-best defense. Maryland ranks 10th overall with the 23rd-ranked offense and sixth-ranked defense.
How will the Gators deal with the front court combo of Maryland center Derik Queen and forward Julian Reese?
The 6-foot-10, 246-pound Queen earned Big Ten freshman of the year honors, averaging 16.2 points and 9.1 rebounds. Reese, at 6-9 and 252 pounds, is another imposing body inside, who has averaged 13.3 points and 9.1 rebounds with 54 blocks. UF’s front court was outscored 51-18 by UConn and will need to play with more physicality and urgency to keep Queen and Reese from taking over inside.
One concern for Florida in this tournament has been averaging 12.0 turnovers through its first two games. Clayton has served his role as a scoring point guard, averaging 23.0 points, but also has posted an assist-to-turnover ratio of three-to-nine in that span.
“We all know the reality, if you’re going to make a deep run in March, you’ve got to catch some breaks, and you’ve got to win some games like this to be able to push through and stay alive,” UF coach Todd Golden said. “Theoretically, beating a team like UConn, that’s used to winning this time of year, in the fashion that we did, should be really good for us moving forward.” Florida 78, Maryland 74.
