College Basketball Betting Analysis: NC State

NC State (9-10, 2-6 ACC) suffered its fourth consecutive loss, falling 63-57 to SMU at home. The Wolfpack overcame a 15-point deficit, narrowing the gap to 56-55 after Ben Middlebrooks’ free throws. However, SMU’s B.J. Edwards responded with a 3-pointer, and Samet Yigitoglu sealed the win with four free throws in the final moments.

The Turnovers

The Pack capitalized on SMU’s 15 turnovers, recording nine steals, the highest since November 22. However, NC State’s offense struggled, scoring a season-low 57 points with a 29.2% shooting rate. Marcus Hill led with 14 points, followed by Dontrez Styles with 12, Jayden Taylor with 11, and Paul McNeil’s career-best 8 points.

Where did NC State’s offense go wrong? The Pack, which had a multitude of open looks throughout the game, shot just 16.7% from 3-point distance.

Kevin Keatts

“We’re not shooting the ball well at all,” Coach Keatts said. “I thought we had some perfect looks, and for whatever reason, we’re not making those. Our guys are fighting their butts off defensively. Defense is really keeping us in every game that we have. When you hold a team to 63 points, you have a chance to win. The unfortunate thing is we scored 57. … The message to the guys is keep on fighting, don’t let your defense suffer.”

NC State recorded a season-low six turnovers against SMU, maintaining single-digit turnovers in five consecutive games and 11 overall this season. The team leads the ACC and ranks fourth nationally in the fewest turnovers per game (9.3), aiming for a fourth straight year among the best in ball handling after previous top finishes.

The Top Players

Hill and Jayden have spearheaded NC State’s scoring for eight consecutive games. The last non-duo scorer was Ben Middlebrooks on Dec. 14 against Kansas, with 14 points. Hill has scored in double digits for 12 games, leading with an average of 13.2 points and shooting 50.0% from the field, ranking fifth in the ACC. In conference play, he averages 15.4 points and 5.1 rebounds while boasting a 2.0 assist-to-turnover ratio with 40 assists.

Against the Blue Devils

Keatts is 5-6 against Duke as head coach of the Pack, including a 3-2 mark against the Blue Devils with Jon Scheyer as head coach. NC State has 16 wins over ranked opponents in the Kevin Keatts era, including two wins over teams ranked No. 2 in the AP poll.

College Basketball Betting Analysis: Duke

No. 2 Duke (17-2, 9-0 ACC) won its 13th straight game Saturday, 63-56 at Wake Forest, even though the Blue Devils missed their first 13 shots after halftime and went 1 for 19 through the first 12 minutes of the second half. That helped Wake Forest rally from 15 down before halftime to push ahead 45-39 on Juke Harris’ basket at the 9:55 mark. Duke responded with seven straight scoring possessions, going up 53-47 on Cooper Flagg’s two free throws with 3:53 left, and never looked back. The Blue Devils had yet to play an ACC game closer than 11 points.

Once Duke mixed in some zone, in the final seven minutes, the Blue Devils responded to their challenging stretch with a 17-4 run and Wake Forest made three shots the rest of the way. The Demon Deacons missed six shots in a row from just under the 7-minute mark until there were 41 seconds left in the game.

Jon Scheyer

“We’ll have it in our back pocket. But I give these guys credit, you still have to make it work,” coach Scheyer said of using the 2-3 zone. “We haven’t practiced it too much, but we’ve had it in our back pocket, just in case. The coaching staff said, ‘Let’s do it,’ and I thought it was great timing to go to the zone.”

The Stats

Duke struggled with a season-low point total, tallying 16 turnovers against 14 assists. Maluach and Ngongba faced foul trouble, but freshman Flagg excelled with 24 points, aided by Knueppel’s 15 and Gillis’s 11, averaging 23.0 points per game in ACC play.

The Top Players

Both Knueppel and Gillis connected on three three-pointers, and Gillis’s third three-pointer, from deep in the corner with less than a minute remaining, gave Duke a seven-point cushion. Knueppel has now made at least three shots from deep in nine games this season, and Duke is 9-0 in those contests. Four different Blue Devils finished the contest with at least six rebounds, led by Knueppel’s career-high nine caroms. Flagg reeled in seven boards and paced the team in assists with six.

Winning Streak

The 13-game winning streak is the nation’s longest and the longest by a Duke team under Scheyer. The last time the Blue Devils won at least 13 games in a row was during the 2014-15 campaign, when Duke reeled off 14 straight wins to begin the 2014-15 season. With the win, Scheyer is now 71-20 (.780) as head coach of the Blue Devils.

They are now 6-0 in road games this season, the most games without a loss on the road to start a season since the 2018-19 schedule, when the Blue Devils won their first seven road contests. Duke’s 9-0 record in ACC play is the Blue Devils’ best open in conference action since starting 10-0 in 2007-08. The Blue Devils snapped Wake Forest’s unbeaten record at home this season.

The Record

The Demon Deacons entered Saturday’s contest with an unblemished 10-0 record on their home floor. The Blue Devils won the rebounding battle, 46-29, and have out-rebounded 16 of their first 19 opponents this season. Duke’s defense has held all but one unranked opponent under 65 points.

ACC Top 5

Duke are now 306-92 (.769) in ACC regular-season games when ranked as a top-five team in the country. Duke enters Monday’s contest third in the ACC in scoring, averaging 80.3 points per game. The Wolfpack have held every opponent under 80 points this season. Blue Devils forward Maliq Brown (2.5 PPG, 4.5 RPG) has missed the past three games and is not expected back Monday. He’s a reserve but one of the team’s better defenders.

NC State vs Duke Last Meeting

This season’s only scheduled meeting between NC State and Duke is set, marking their 258th matchup. Last season, they clashed three times, with NC State winning two, including a surprising 76-64 Elite Eight victory. Key players DJ Burns and DJ Horne are no longer on the teams. Duke, which recently missed a Final Four, leads the all-time series with 152 wins to NC State’s 105.
