How are Both NCAAB Teams in the Season

On Jan. 11, the North Carolina Tar Heels beat the visiting Wolfpack 63-61. Ian Jackson scored 21 points and Jalen Washington made the game-winning basket then sealed it with a block. It was tied at 61-all when Washington’s dunk ended the scoring with 24 seconds left. Washington then blocked Jayden Taylor’s layup attempt to end it. Washington had his first career double-double with 11 points and 12 rebounds, while Jackson made five 3-pointers and finished 8-of-15 shooting. Reigning ACC Player of the Year RJ Davis added 11 points for North Carolina.

The Tar Heels led for most of the game and by as many as nine points, 56-47, with about six minutes. Marcus Hill scored six points during a 12-2 run to give the Wolfpack a 59-58 advantage with 2:28 remaining. Hill finished with 20 points. Taylor was the only other NC State player in double figures with 12 points. Ben Middlebrooks pulled down a career-best 14 rebounds as NC State tied its season-high with 16 offensive rebounds. The Tar Heels held NC State to just 20 first-half points (a season-low by a Carolina opponent), but the Pack shot 60 percent and outscored UNC, 41-37, in the second half but came up short in the closing moments.

“I thought we gave up way too many transition baskets as Carolina’s really good in transition. And then I thought they really, offensive rebounds really hurt us. I just thought they got so many easy baskets and then obviously they made some plays down the stretch,” NCSU coach Kevin Keatts said.

First ACC Winning Streak For Wolfpack?

NC State (10-15, 3-11 ACC) has not won back-to-back ACC games yet in a highly disappointing season but has a chance to do so Wednesday as it ended a nine-game losing streak on Saturday with a 70-62 home win over Boston College. The Wolfpack shot 39% but with only five turnovers, they had a 15-3 advantage in points after turnovers. The Eagles were 17-for-48 shooting (35%).

“We had to establish ourselves on a defensive end, and we really did,” Coach Kevin Keatts said. “I thought our guys were really locked in and did a great job. And, our defense has kept us in, you during the streak. Our defense has really helped us and kept us in a lot of games. And we just had to get back to defending.”

Jayden Taylor led NC State with 19 points and had a team-best four steals. Taylor’s four steals were part of 12 for the Pack as NC State finished with the second-most steals in a game this season and most against an ACC opponent. Brandon Huntley-Hatfield  also reached double figures with 11 points.

All year long, Wolfpack fans have been eagerly awaiting Louisville transfer guard Mike James’ debut after he averaged 12 points and five rebounds for the Cards. At the season’s start, it was expected that James would miss only three or four games due to injury, or perhaps just the first month of basketball at most. But he hasn’t played yet and now isn’t expected to this season.

“I would say we’re getting towards the point where it’s probably not going to happen,” Keatts said. “I haven’t completely ruled it out, but I would say really unlikely at this point.”

Heels Can’t Afford Bad Loss

Very much on the NCAA Tournament bubble, North Carolina (15-11, 8-6) got a huge win Saturday, 88-82 at Syracuse. J.J. Starling converted a three-point play and then made two free throws before Eddie Lampkin Jr. hit two foul shots to cap a 7-1 spurt that cut the Orange’s deficit to 82-80 with 1:01 to play but Elliot Cadeau answered with a layup and RJ Davis followed with two free throws to make it a six-point game with 25 seconds remaining to clinch.

Ian Jackson, who hadn’t reached double figures in points and was 2 for 11 from three-point range in the last four games, finished with 23 points. It was his highest scoring output since dropping a season-high 27 at Notre Dame on January 4. He shot 8 for 15 from the floor and tied his season high with five three-pointers. Jackson leads the team with eight 20-point games, and Saturday was the first time in eight games a player other than Davis led UNC in scoring.

Making his second consecutive start, Jae’Lyn Withers played his best game in three seasons as a Tar Heel. He scored a season-high 19 points, hitting 7 of 10 shots and grabbing six rebounds before fouling out with 1:45 remaining. “J-Wit is our biggest four. His ability on the defensive end to be able to guard one-on-one was huge,” coach Hubert Davis said.

Carolina shot 46.4% from three, making 13 of 28. UNC is 13-4 this season when it shoots 30% or better from three and 4-1 when it makes better than 40% (only loss was to Michigan State). The Orange outscored UNC, 44-34, in paint points. Carolina is now 1-4 this season when getting outscored in the paint.

NC State vs. North Carolina NCAAB Expert Prediction

Heels star and reigning ACC Player of the Year RJ Davis has made multiple three-pointers in eight consecutive games, including five games when he made three. The 27-point margin in favor of the Tar Heels from deep on Saturday was their largest of the season. In 14 ACC games, the Tar Heel defense has held the opponents to just 42.3% shooting from the floor, which is fourth best in the league.

Carolina plays NC State for the 249th time overall and the 39th time in the Dean E. Smith Center. UNC is 9-2 at home this season, including 5-1 in league play, with losses to Alabama and Stanford. The Pack are winless in seven on the road, six of which have come in ACC games.

UNC is 167-81 all-time against NC State, including 82-23 in Chapel Hill. The Tar Heels are 39-7 in the last 21 seasons. The Wolfpack haven’t beaten Carolina in consecutive games since 2003. Davis has averaged 14.8 points in 10 games against the Wolfpack. He has scored in double figures eight times with a high of 30 in the 2024 ACC championship game. He scored 26 points against NC State in the Smith Center in 2022-23, when he went a career-best 14 for 14 from the free throw line.

Last season, Carolina edged NC State, 79-70, in the Smith Center. The Tar Heels overcame an eight-point halftime deficit, holding the Pack to 22.2% shooting from the floor in the second half. Elliot Cadeau scored 15 points and had seven assists and Harrison Ingram scored a season-high 22 points.

Expert Prediction: UNC 79, NC State 71
NCAAB Pick: North Carolina ML
