Oregon Basketball Analysis

Oregon (13-2, 2-2 Big Ten) beat a good Maryland team on Sunday, 83-79, as the Ducks bounced back from their 109-77 loss to Illinois in the previous game to secure their first home win in the Big Ten. The Terps led by as many as 13 in the first half and still by three at the break.

Jackson Shelstad

“We’ve been in a lot of these games, and we’ve come back from more than that,” Oregon’s Guard Shelstad said of the early deficit. “So, we just had to trust in each other, trust what our coaches are saying — 40-minute fight, like coach Altman says every game. Just keep throwing our punches. We knew we were going to go on a run.”

Keeshawn Barthelemy

After Julian Reese opened the second half with a basket to put the Terps up 47-42, Oregon followed with 14 straight points. Barthelemy capped the run with a basket to put Oregon ahead 56-47. Their lead lasted until Derik Queen scored a layup at 9:04 to regain a Terp lead at 67-66. But tied at 76 apiece, Barthelemy drilled a 3-pointer at 1:31 to put the Ducks up by three, 79-76, and they held on to win. Barthelemy is just six points shy of 1,000 for his career, with 994 points in 120 games so far.

Scored Points

Nate Bittle and Shelstad led the way Sunday, combining for 39 points on 14-of-20 shooting. Shelstad made his first seven shots of the game — five of them three-pointers — on his way to 23 points. Oregon improved to 5-1 when trailing at halftime this season.

Nate Bittle

“We knew what we had to do,” Bittle said. “We just got whooped the other night, and we knew coming out that (Maryland) is a good team; they were ahead of us in the NET and stuff like that. And this was another game that we can show what type of team we can be.”

The Stats

Under Dana Altman all-time, the Ducks are 212-22 when totaling fewer turnovers than the opponent, 240-100 when out rebounding the opponent and 244-30 when holding opponents to 69 or fewer points. This is Oregon’s first season in the expanded 18-team Big Ten, the first conference change for Oregon since joining the then-Pacific Coast Conference in 1918.

The Ducks will get a taste of life on the road in the Big Ten with games at Ohio State on Thursday and at Penn State on Sunday. So far this season, Oregon’s only away games this season have come in familiar, time-zone friendly places like the Bay Area, Los Angeles and Las Vegas.

Altman said that while it is a longer trip than the program is used to, it’s only going to be slightly longer than the team’s flights to Arizona and Arizona State when they were members of the Pac-12.

Dana Altman

“No excuses. If we don’t play well at Ohio State, or we don’t play well at Penn State, it’s not because of the travel, because we didn’t take care of ourselves,” said Altman. “We didn’t get prepared. I told our players, I don’t want to hear one thing ever about all the travel.”

Ohio State Basketball Analysis

Ohio State (10-5, 2-2 Big Ten) will be playing its third game in seven days after an 89-88 wild double-OT win at Minnesota on Monday. The Gophers had a chance to win in the first overtime, but Mike Mitchell Jr. — a 91% free-throw shooter — missed twice with six seconds left and Minnesota leading 73-71. OSU’s John Mobley Jr. made two free throws with four seconds remaining to force a second extra period. Minnesota made only 12 of 27 free throws, while Ohio State sank 29 of 33.

OSU grabbed a six-point lead to start the second OT period, hitting a three-pointer and adding a three-point play, and then adding a layup to make it 81-73. Mike Mitchell Jr. hit a jumper to cut the deficit back to six, but OSU stretched it back to 83-75 with two free throws. Parker Fox scored on a layup and Kadyn Betts (one point, two rebounds) and Lu’Cye Patterson each hit a FT to pull Minnesota within 83-79. Ohio State made all six of its free throw attempts in the final half minute, offsetting a pair of three-pointers from Patterson and another from Mitchell Jr., as the Buckeyes held on for the win.

Devin Royal

Royal led five Buckeyes in double figures with 19 points and seven rebounds. He was 9-of-11 from the free throw line and had a timely dunk to pull the Buckeyes even at the end of regulation.

Bruce Thornton

Thornton made 8-of-9 clutch free throws down the stretch and finished with 18 points. He played a career-high 47:07 in the game. Ques Glover also came up big in the second overtime, and he finished with 13 points and three rebounds.

John Mobley Jr.

Although his outside shot has fallen off – Mobley is now 5 for 25 (20.0%) in his last four games from deep – he still finished with 12 points by going 5 for 6 from the free-throw line. He also dished out four assists without a turnover in 25:16, helping the Buckeyes continue to navigate guard Meechie Johnson’s ongoing indefinite leave of absence from the program for personal reasons.

“He puts in so much work, so every day, everybody on the team knows he’s going to make the next one,” Thornton said of Mobley. “We have unbelievable confidence in him, and he puts the work in for him to have that confidence. I hope he keeps doing what he’s doing.”

Micah Parrish

Parrish was the fifth Buckeye in double figures with 11 points to go along with seven rebounds. There were a total of 10 ties and 24 lead changes in the game. Sophomore Aaron Bradshaw and fifth year Ques Glover both returned to the lineup on Dec. 21, and both have played well. They have combined to average 21.7 points, 6.0 rebounds and 2.7 assists.

The Stats

OSU is second in the league in three-point percentage at 38.4 percent, just behind Purdue. On the other side of the floor, the Buckeyes are second in three-point percentage defense and third in overall field goal defense.
