Last Meeting

On Dec. 5, Oregon State lost 90-65 at home to Arizona. Bennedict Mathurin scored 29 points, including four 3-pointers, and Christian Koloko added 12 points for the Wildcats, who won their fourth straight against the Beavers. Mathurin finished with six rebounds. Jerod Lucas scored 17 points to lead the Beavers. Arizona fell behind 13-7 early, responded with a 16-0 run capped by Mathurin’s three-point play and steadily pulled away, never relinquishing the lead. The Beavers were thwarted by turnovers, with 22 that Arizona turned into 27 points.

Oregon State and Arizona are meeting for the 92nd time with the Wildcats holding a 69-22 advantage, including a 37-6 edge in Tucson. The Beavers have won once in Tucson since 1983 (63-55 on Feb. 13, 2010).

Why Bet on Oregon State?

OSU (3-20) lost its 10th in a row Tuesday, 90-64 at home to Colorado. The Buffs went to intermission on a 14-2 run in the final 3:31, led 44-32 and were largely in control the rest of the way. Dashawn Davis’ three-point play with 15:54 remaining brought the Beavers within 48-44, but Colorado pushed the lead back to double digits for good when sophomore reserve Luke O’Brien sank a 3-pointer more than four minutes later.

Dashawn Davis led Oregon State with a career-high 22 points. Davis went 9-for-17 from the field, 1-for-3 from beyond the arc and 3-for-3 from the free throw line for his 22 points. His previous career best was 17 points against Washington. He also had six assists to maintain his lead in the Pac-12 in that category. The last Oregon State player to lead the conference in assists was Gary Payton in 1989-90 (8.1 per game). Warith Alatishe had an excellent all-around game with eight points, five rebounds, five assists and five steals. The five dimes were a career high and the five steals equaled his career best.

Glenn Taylor Jr. is averaging 10.5 points and 3.5 rebounds in the last four games as a starter; he averaged 4.8 points and 1.7 rebounds in the first 19 games coming off the bench. Jarod Lucas has made 158 career 3-pointers; he needs two more to move into Oregon State’s career top-10 list (Josh Steinthal and Charles McKinney are tied for ninth with 160 each).

The Beavers had only seven scholarship players available. Dexter Akanno (hip), Rodrigue Andela (foot), Isaiah Johnson (concussion), Xzavier Malone-Key (back) and Tre’ Williams all missed the game with injuries.

For this one, Oregon State has never defeated a Top 5 team in a true road game.

Why Bet on Arizona?

Arizona (22-2) won its sixth in a row Saturday, 92-68 over Washington despite trailing by 14 points early. Arizona locked down the Huskies — aside from Terrell Brown Jr., who had 29 points — and efficiently found ways to pick apart Washington’s defense. The Wildcats shot 57%, and eight different players scored. Arizona outscored Washington 34-11 over the final 10½ minutes of the first half and the 14-point deficit was a 45-36 Wildcats lead at halftime.

Bennedict Mathurin scored 25 points and Azuolas Tubelis added 21 points and 10 rebounds for the Cats. Guard Kerr Kriisa left late in the second half in discomfort holding, his left hand/wrist. Kriisa had six points and five assists, and has been averaging 10.4 points a game this season.

UA leads the nation in assists/gm (20.0), rebounds/gm (43.9), 2-pt FG% defense (39.8%). The Cats are in the top 10 nationally in the following categories: scoring margin (2nd), field goal pct. defense (2nd), assist rate (3rd), scoring offense (3rd), blocked shots/game (3rd), total assists (4th), rebound margin (4th). In the Pac-12, Arizona leads the conference in scoring, field goal percent, rebounds, field goal percent defense, blocks, assists, scoring margin and rebound margin.

The Wildcats jumped over the Purdue Boilermakers to land at No. 3 in The Associated Press men’s basketball poll released Monday. If both Gonzaga and Arizona finished with No. 1 seeds in the NCAA Tournament, it would not only avoid the possibility of UA coach Tommy Lloyd having to face his former Gonzaga program until the Final Four, but it would also be a historic tournament moment.

Only once since the NCAA began seeding all teams in 1979 have two teams come out of the West as No. 1 seeds: In 2000, Arizona earned the No. 1 seed in the West while Stanford became the No. 1 team in the South.
