MyBookie College Basketball Analysis: St. John’s
After moving up five spots from No. 20 last week, the Red Storm at No. 15 have matched their ranking since 2000 in the AP poll. This marks the third time in the last 25 years St. John’s has been a top-15 team, achieving the same ranking on Dec. 29, 2014 and Feb. 28, 2011.
Conference Stats
St. John’s (17-3, 8-1 Big East) won its sixth straight game Wednesday, 79-71 in OT over Xavier, despite trailing by 16 early in the second half. Kadary Richmond’s driving layup with 1:03 left in regulation sent the game to overtime tied at 65, and St. John’s scored the first eight points of the extra period to pull away.
Second Half
The Red Storm won with just one 3-pointer made for the second time this season. The Johnnies also drained one trey in their 70-62 win over Butler on Jan. 4. The Red Storm erased a 16-point deficit in the second half for the second time since the start of Big East action, wiping out the same margin at Providence in its 72-70 win on Dec. 20.
Kadary Richmond
Richmond paced four Johnnies in double figures with 19 points on 9-of-17 shooting, reaching 1,500 points in his collegiate career. He became the fourth active NCAA Division I player to register 1,500 career points and 600 career assists. The 6-foot-6 guard also chipped in seven rebounds, five assists and three steals in 44 minutes of action. Zuby Ejiofor, Simeon Wilcher and RJ Luis Jr. all chipped in 16 points apiece in the win. Ejiofor and Luis held strong on the boards with eight and seven rebounds, respectively. Ejiofor has at least seven rebounds in 17 straight games, the longest run in the country. He leads Division I with 4.5 offensive rebounds per game and is 29th in blocks per game at 1.9.

The Streak
The Red Storm’s six consecutive conference wins is the program’s longest streak in a single season since 2014, when it captured the same number of victories from Feb. 1 to Feb. 18. St. John’s has been relentless in its comeback efforts, holding a 6-1 record when trailing at halftime. The Johnnies are averaging a Big East-best 42.8 points in the second half this season, outscoring opponents by 9.25 points over the final 20 minutes. The second half scoring margin ranks fourth-most in NCAA Division, trailing a trio of top-five teams in Duke, Iowa State and Florida 4.
Big East
St. John’s hasn’t won even a share of the Big East regular-season conference crown since 1992. That was the final season on the sideline for iconic coach Lou Carnesecca, who died Nov. 30 just a few weeks shy of his 100th birthday. The program is off to its best start since opening 20-2 in 1985-86, and the Red Storm are 8-1 in Big East play for the first time since 1999.
Rick Pitino
“We’re bringing St. John’s back to where it needs to be,” Coach Pitino said. “It’s a shame Lou is not alive. He’d be very proud of this team, the way they fight. … The most important thing for us is to keep improving and keep winning. We cannot take losses. It’s a non-negotiable thing for us, and that’s the attitude we have and that’s where we come back. I think these guys have a great fear of losing, a great fear, and that’s a good thing.”
St. John’s doesn’t have any wins against teams currently ranked in the AP Top 25. The team’s three losses were by a combined five points — one on a 3-pointer at the buzzer, and all against power conference teams.

MyBookie College Basketball Analysis: Georgetown
Georgetown (13-7, 4-5 Big East) lost for the fifth time in six games Saturday, 78-68 at Providence. The Friars led Georgetown at the half, 38-33, but GU battled back. Christ Essandoko’s 3-pointer with 11:44 left in the second half gave Providence the lead for good at 47-45.
Micah Peavy
Peavy led all scorers with a career-best 27 points on 12-for-19 shooting from the floor in a full 40 minutes of action. Thomas Sorber matched his career high with 25 points on 10-of-17 shooting to go along with 15 rebounds for his seventh double-double of the season. He added three blocks to his line for the day. The Hoyas shot 46.7% (28-for-60) from the floor and 30.8% (4-for-13) from behind the arc. They were outrebounded 37-32. PC had 16 offensive rebounds, leading to 20 second-chance points.

Ed Cooley
“I thought the energy that we played with was good, not great. This was the first game we played all year where I thought our defense let us down. I don’t think we were gritty, and I thought that Providence was tougher. They played really well defensively. We have a really, really quick turnaround on Tuesday. This has been a marathon of games, as we were the first bye in the Big East, so we have not had a stretch where we can get healthy. Georgetown is going to continue to get better, continue to improve, and slowly, but surely that wagon is coming,” Coach Cooley said.
Cooley and his team must now regroup and find a way out of their current rut. The Hoyas are one frenetic late 7-0 run at Villanova away from a six-game losing streak, and they have not yet scored 70 points in a game since the beginning of January. Being so reliant on just four players makes Georgetown highly susceptible to poor individual performances.
Thomas Sorber
Sorber was named Big East Freshman of the Week for last week after averaging a double-double with 20.0 ppg and 13.0 rpg. He is the national leader among freshmen with seven double-doubles and has been named Big East Freshman of the Week five times. Sorber leads a quartet of Hoyas averaging double figures, posting 14.8 ppg, a mark that ranks 12th in the Big East. Peavy chips in 14.6 ppg, followed by Malik Mack (13.0 ppg) and Jayden Epps (12.9 ppg). Georgetown and Villanova are the only institutions with four players among the top 30 in scoring in the league.
He leads the squad on the glass managing 9.1 rpg, which leads the league, followed by Fielder (5.6 rpg) and Peavy (5.2 rpg). Mack paces the offense dishing out 4.6 apg with Peavy behind him at 3.5 apg. Peavy is tied for 28th in the country and ranks second in the Big East AST in steals per game, picking 2.25 pockets per game.
Against St. John’s
Cooley is 15-12 against St. John’s in his career, and is 1-4 all-time against Rick Pitino. The Hoyas’ last victory over SJU was on December 13, 2020, when it won 97-94 in overtime at McDonough Arena.
^St. John’s vs Georgetown Last Meeting
St. John’s goes for the regular-season sweep as it beat visiting Georgetown 63-58 on Jan. 14. RJ Luis Jr. scored 19 points, and Aaron Scott added 14 points, nine rebounds and three steals. Luis scored 10 points in the first half and St. John’s went into the break trailing 37-27. St. John’s used a 19-2 second-half run to come back from a 14-point deficit and take the lead at 46-43 with 12:28 left in the half before finishing off the victory. Micah Peavy led the Hoyas with 21 points, seven rebounds and three steals. St. John’s leads 68-57.
