Series History

The Red Storm and Stony Brook will square off for the 10th time in program history and the first time since Dec. 6, 2020, when St. John’s earned an 89-66 victory in Queens. The Johnnies nearly broke the program’s single-game record for steals with 20, falling two short of the mark (22) set against St. Francis Brooklyn on Dec. 1, 1992.

Why Bet on Stony Brook?

In its inaugural season in the CAA last season, Stony Brook finished 11-22 overall and 6-12 in league play, earning the No. 10 seed in the CAA Championship. The Seawolves faced off with North Carolina A&T in the program’s first taste of the CAA postseason, upsetting the No. 7 seeded Aggies to claim the program’s first postseason victory as a member of the league. The season ultimately came to a close at the hands of the eventual conference champion Charleston Cougars.

Tyler Stephenson-Moore was tabbed to the CAA’s All- Conference Third Team, pacing the Seawolves in scoring average (14.3 ppg) and field goals made (152) and finishing second on the squad in rebounding (4.3 rpg) and assists (66). He is back and earned an All-CAA Preseason Second Team nod.

In total, Stony Brook returns nine letterwinners and welcomes five newcomers this season. Transfers Aaron Clarke (Sacred Heart) and Andre Snoddy (Central Connecticut State) are expected to make an immediate impact after averaging 10.0 points and 9.5 points, respectively, last season.

Former Fairfield University forward Chris Maidoh also is a new addition. He shot 54 percent from the field during his latest collegiate season with the Stags. The 6-foot-10 Maidoh is effective on both ends of the court. In addition to his ability to shoot from the field, Maidoh registered 22 blocks throughout the 2022-23 campaign.

Stony Brook has lost its season-opening game in four consecutive seasons: Florida (2022-23), George Mason (2021-22), Saint Peter’s (2020-21), Yale (2019-20). The Seawolves last season-opening victory came against George Washington on the road in 2018-19. Stony Brook is 31-27 all-time in season openers dating back to the program’s inaugural season in 1965-66. Since transitioning to Division I for the 1999-00 season, the Seawolves are 10-14 in season openers.

Stony Brook was selected to finish ninth in the 2023-24 CAA Preseason Poll, as voted on by the league’s head coaches.

Why Bet on St. John’s?

Back in March, St. John’s lured Coach Rick Pitino from Iona and back to the Big East with a six-year contract. Former coach Mike Anderson was fired after last season. Pitino (Providence, Kentucky, Louisville) is one of two men’s coaches in NCAA tournament history to lead three different programs to the Final Four. John Calipari has led UMass, Memphis and Kentucky to the Final Four, which includes his vacated appearances with UMass and Memphis.

Pitino will be St. John’s most decorated coach since Lou Carnesecca stepped down in 1992. St. John’s has been to two Final Fours in its history and reached just three NCAA tournaments since 2002. Pitino has not only won two national titles but has coached in 23 NCAA tournaments. It’s undeniably an enormous coup for the Johnnies, who were desperate for a big-name coach in an attempt to return to their glory days.

Pitino boasts an 834-293 record in his career and is the winningest active coach in NCAA Division I. The legendary head coach is 30-4 all-time in season openers and will face Stony Brook for the first time in his career.

The only key holdover from last year’s team is also the team’s anchor, 6-11 senior Joel Soriano. The 2023 Big East Most Improved Player posted 25 double-doubles a year ago, the most by a Johnnie since Walter Berry had 28 in 1985-86. Soriano’s 25 double-doubles were the second most in the nation last season. In addition, he recorded career highs with 15.2 points and 11.9 rebounds per game, the latter of which led the Big East and sat fourth in the national standings.

Soriano and fellow returnee Drissa Traore are joined by 12 newcomers, including the nation’s second-leading scorer from a year ago, Jordan Dingle, who is set to make his Red Storm debut on Tuesday. The 2023 Ivy League Player of the Year averaged 23.4 points while shooting 46.3 percent from the field for Penn.

St. John’s has won nine straight season openers, dating back to the 2014-15 season. The Johnnies will also ride a 19-game winning streak in its season debut at Carnesecca Arena into Tuesday’s game.
