It’s a light slate around college basketball Tuesday for the second day of the 2024 season, and the late game is probably the best matchup as UC Davis of the Big West visits Washington.

The Huskies are solid favorites on the NCAAB odds in their first-ever game as members of the Big Ten in Week 1.

Uc Davis Aggies NCAAB Line +614

UC Davis is a Big West school that finished 20-13 last season and lost in the Big West title game to Long Beach State, failing to make the NCAA Tournament or NIT. But the Aggies might have the best player in the conference this season in Ty Johnson, who was named preseason first-team All-Big West.

The Statistics

Last year, the 6-foot-3 guard was second-team All-Big West as he averaged 17.8 points, 3.7 rebounds, 1.8 steals, and 3.25 assists per game. Johnson also earned a spot on the 2023-24 All-Tournament Team for his standout performances at the Big West Championships. He is the leading returning scorer for the Big West Conference and led the league in steals as well.

Ty Johnson

Johnson was the only player in the Big West last year to rank in the top 10 for scoring, assists, and steals. He finished the season with 19 consecutive double-figure scoring games. Throughout his two seasons as an Aggie, he has recorded five 30-plus point games and 31 multi-steal games. Additionally, he has had 10 games in which he posted a multi-steal game with four or more assists. Notably, he has ranked in the 99th percentile for free throw attempts per 40 minutes in each of his two seasons.

The Aggies will need a big season from Johnson to compete in the conference race this year after losing three other starters. That includes 2023-24 Big West Player of the Year Elijah Pepper. In Big West contests, Pepper averaged 20.8 points, 4.6 rebounds, 2.3 assists, and 2.0 steals per game while being the league’s premier marksman, sitting at the top as the only player to average three or more makes per game from three point range.

Elijah Pepper

For the entirety of the season, Pepper averaged 20.5 points per game and was the lone player within the Big West to average 20 or more points per game to become UC Davis’ first men’s basketball player to secure the league’s Player of the Year Award since TJ Shorts in 2018.

Niko Rocak

The other returning starter is senior forward Niko Rocak (5.2 ppg, 5.0 rpg, 1.2 bpg). UC Davis was picked to finish fifth in the Big West. Coach Jim Les also added three transfers in guard Carl Daughtery Jr., forward Derek Sangster, and forward Jamaal Unuakhalu.

Carl Daughtery Jr.

Daughtery Jr. spent the past two seasons at the University of Central Arkansas and averaged nearly 10 points and 2.7 rebounds per game last season, finishing third in scoring for the Bears. Before Princeton, Sangster was one of the most highly-touted prospects in the class of 2023. The former three-star recruit was ranked as the 46th best player by 247Sports. Unuakhalu joins the Aggies after two seasons at Moorpark College. As a sophomore, Unuakhalu averaged 14.5 points and 10.7 rebounds per game, helping lead Moorpark to a 22-7 record. He led the conference in rebounding, ranked second in field goal percentage, and as a result was named the WSC-North Conference Defensive Player of the Year while also earning a spot on the First Team.

“Jamaal will be one of the most athletic players in our program since I’ve been here. He runs easy, plays above the rim, and affects the game in many ways because of his versatility and how hard he plays,” Les said.

Washington Huskies NCAAB Line -1000

Washington finished 17-15 overall last season in its final Pac-12 campaign ahead of a move to the Big Ten this season with Oregon, UCLA and USC. The Huskies have a new head coach this year in Danny Sprinkle, who is from Utah State.

The Record

In his one season in Logan, Sprinkle led the Aggies to an impressive 28-7 record, including 14-4 in conference play, winning the regular season championship. Utah State received an at-large selection to the 2024 NCAA Tournament and won its first tournament game since 2001, defeating TCU in Round 1 before losing to eventual national championship finalist Purdue.

Danny Sprinkle

During his time at Utah State, Sprinkle helped develop Great Osobor into the Mountain West Player of the Year and Newcomer of the Year, Josh Uduje into the Co-Sixth Man of the Year and Ian Martinez into an Honorable Mention All-Conference player. Sprinkle was named the Mountain West Conference Coach of the Year and a finalist for the 2023-24 Jim Phelan National Coach of the Year. Sprinkle is the son of former UW football defensive back, Bill Sprinkle, who played for the Huskies from 1965-68.

Sprinkle’s first big move was getting Osobor to follow him from Utah State to Washington. Osobor, a 6-foot-8 big man from England, averaged 17.7 points, 9.0 rebounds, 2.8 assists, 1.4 blocks and 1.3 steals per game last season. He garnered Mountain West Player of the Year and AP All-American Honorable Mention honors, and reportedly got $2 million in NIL money to transfer to Washington.

The Transfers

Osobor joins a talented group of incoming freshmen and transfers portal recruits for UW that includes five-star point guard Zoom Diallo, four-star shooting guard Jase Butler and transfers Mekhi Mason (Rice), DJ Davis (Butler), Luis Kortright (Rhode Island), Franck Kepnang (Oregon) and Tyler Harris (Portland).

UW returns just 9.7% of its scoring from last season, the 16th lowest percentage in the nation. Willhelm Breidenbach is the only returning Husky to play in more than 10 games a season ago. Despite just four returners, the UW roster boasts a veteran presence, as Washington players have appeared in 814 total collegiate games and the Huskies own 484 career starts. UW boasts seven players that averaged double figure scoring last season even if elsewhere in Osobor (17.7), Tyree Ihenacho (14.5), Mekhi Mason (14.3), Davis (13.5), Harris (12.1), Chris Conway (10.0) and Kortright (10.0).

Washington is 93-31 all-time in season-openers, winning 24 of the last 30. UW has played UC Davis just once previously, a 77-70 win in Seattle in 2017.
