Series History
This is only the second meeting between the schools. The Cavaliers defeated the Tigers 78-60 in the second round of the NCAA Tournament on March 23, 2014, at PNC Arena in Raleigh, N.C. The win gave Virginia its first NCAA Sweet 16 berth since 1995. Tony Bennett and Penny Hardaway are two of 26 current NCAA Division I head coaches that played in the NBA.
Why Bet on #22 Virginia Cavaliers?
UVA was not ranked in the AP preseason top-25 poll for the first time since 2017-18 when it received votes. Prior to this year, UVA was ranked in the preseason AP top-25 five consecutive seasons and nine of the last 10 seasons under Tony Bennett. However, the Wahoos (9-1) are No. 22 in this week’s AP Poll.
Virginia escaped at home vs. Northeastern on Saturday with a 56-54 win. The Huskies led by as many as 13 in the second half before the Cavaliers trimmed the deficit down to five with 12:48 remaining and took its first lead since the 4:32 mark of the first half with a three from Isaac McKneely (eight points) with 7:01 left in regulation. It was punch for punch from there, with neither team leading by more than three the rest of the way before Reece Beekman put the hosts up for good on a jumper with five seconds left.
Northeastern held the Cavaliers to a 39% showing in the first half before UVA finished 42% overall (22-of-53) and just 2-of-14 from deep. Beekman was the difference, though, dropping 21 points on 9-of-18 from the floor along with six rebounds and five assists.
“We absolutely don’t win that game without him,” Virginia forward Jake Groves said. On a night when several of his teammates weren’t at their best, Beekman knew he had to assert himself offensively. He’s still inconsistent from the perimeter—Beekman is 7 for 27 from long range this season—but he’s made 41 of 78 attempts (52.6 percent) from inside the arc.
“I had to do that kind of throughout the whole game,” he said, “but especially down the stretch. “Being a point guard and leader, you’ve got to step up in those situations, and the team counts on me in those situations. So I just stepped up and made the plays we needed to win.”
Beekman (12.5 ppg, 5.7 apg, 3.3 rpg & 2.7 spg) is the lone starter back from last season’s ACC regular-season champion and NCAA tournament team that finished 25-8. Beekman, who earned All-ACC third-team honors last season, needs 36 steals to pass Othell Wilson (222 steals from 1981-84) for first all-time at UVA. Ryan Dunn (8.9 ppg) leads the team in rebounding (6.1 rpg), and blocked shots (2.5 bpg). Isaac McKneely (12.3 ppg) leads the team in scoring, 3-pointers (27) and 3-point percentage (55.1%).
Virginia has a five-game winning streak and ranks second in the nation in scoring defense at 53.3 points per game. UVA is 8-1 in non-conference action and plays its first true road game of the season. UVA is shooting 46 percent from the field, 37.4 percent from 3-point range and 67.1 percent from the free throw line. UVA has committed just 80 turnovers and has 1.96 assist/turnover ratio.
The Cavs have totaled 148 stocks (88 steals + 60 blocks). UVA is averaging a school-record 14.8 stocks per game (6.0 blocks and 8.8 steals) since 1976 when steals and blocks were first recorded at Virginia and 1985-86 when recognized by the NCAA.

Why Bet on #23 Memphis Tigers?
The Tigers (8-2) won their third in a row Saturday, 79-77 over No. 13 Clemson, which came out strong in the first half, building its largest lead of the game with 3:23 left in the opening stanza, a 10-point lead at 35-25. The Tigers would head into the break up seven, 39-32. But a 13-1 run by Memphis to begin the second half proved crucial in the end. Although Clemson overcame the run with a 10-2 run themselves, Memphis would grab a late lead it wouldn’t relinquish.
Memphis (8-2) extended its win streak to three games in front of 15,052 raucous fans and picked up its fifth Power Five win of the season, three of which have come against a ranked opponent. Four Tigers were in double figures, led by David Jones’ 22 points on 6-of-14 shooting. Jones notched his fourth-consecutive game with 20-plus points and his sixth of the season. He added six rebounds, a pair of assists and two blocks. Jones is one of only seven players in the country to lead their team in points, rebounds and steals on the year.
Jahvon Quinerly added 17 points to go along with a team-high six assists and three steals. Quinerly recorded his fourth-straight game with at least five assists. He’s now reached double figures in three games in a row and in six games total this season.
Nicholas Jourdain connected on 5-of-6 field goals en route to 11 points and a team-high two blocks. Jaykwon Walton made several big plays and finished with 10 points in 28 minutes off the bench. Memphis shot 43.3 percent from the field (29-67), made 73.9 percent of its free throws (17-23) and dished out 12 assists while swiping nine steals.
Coach Penny Hardaway’s team scored 17 points off 15 Clemson turnovers, while turning the ball over just six times itself. The six miscues are the fewest in a game since coughing it up just five times against Gonzaga on March 19, 2022 in the NCAA Tournament. Memphis drew 14 second-half fouls and went 13-for-19 from the stripe in the last 20 minutes.
Memphis will get a boost soon but not Tuesday from Kansas State transfer Nae’Qwan Tomlin. The 6-foot-9 forward entered the portal on Dec. 8 as a graduate transfer just days after Kansas State AD Gene Taylor announced that Tomlin “will no longer be able to continue” with the Wildcats basketball team. Tomlin has to wait for the new semester to play at Memphis. He hadn’t played this year for KSU but last year averaged 10.4 points and 5.9 rebounds while shooting 73.8% from the floor and was a major contributor in Kansas State reaching the Elite 8.
The Tigers jumped into the AP Top 25 for the first time this season with the Clemson upset, landing at No. 23. It will be the first ranked-versus-ranked matchup inside FedExForum since March 8, 2014 when the Tigers took on SMU.
