Contrary to popular opinion, underdogs almost never win the National Championship. Going back to 2016, a single 2-seed has won the title. The other winners were 1-seeds. Lower seeds rarely move past the Sweet 16. Because 1-seeds are more likely to win the National Championship than any other seed, the top 3 choices to win the title are all likely 1-seeds. Check out why Arizona, Kentucky, and Auburn should be on your College Basketball National Championship Betting radar.
NCAA Basketball: Top 3 Teams to Win the National Championship
2022 Men’s College Basketball National Championship
- When: Monday, April 4
- Where: Caesars Superdome, New Orleans, LA
- TV/Streaming: CBS / Paramount+
Top Pick: Arizona Wildcats +850
After last season, the Arizona Wildcats parted ways with long-time coach Sean Miller. Miller had been an excellent recruiter and terrific regular season coach. He also had the Cats on the cusp of more than one Final Four appearance.
But Miller skirted the rules when recruiting and had become a liability. After firing Miller, many questioned if Arizona would end up a second-tier program.
The Wildcats, though, hired under the radar Gonzaga assistant Tommy Lloyd. In his first season as a head coach, Lloyd has proven he’s one of the best coaches in the nation.
Lloyd has the Wildcats playing like a National Championship team. Arizona is one of the few squads that can win with their offense, U-of-A averages 85 points each game, or defense, the Cats allow 65 points per from less than 37% shooting from the field.
Also, Arizona has Wooden Finalist Benedict Mathurin. Mathurin can drop 35 on any given night, which means Lloyd has a go-to guy if the offense ends up stuck in neutral.
Second Pick: Kentucky Wildcats +825
On February 15, Tennessee blasted Kentucky 76-63. But although the Wildcats lost the game, Big Blue is still in a good position to secure the 2-seed.
Kentucky should win the SEC Tournament. If they don’t lose another game until their conference tournament, the Kentucky Wildcats may enter as the overall 2-seed after 1-seed Gonzaga.
What makes Coach Cal’s 2022 Kentucky squad a choice to win the title? Before the season started, we pointed out how Calipari had taken a different approach from this season to previous seasons.
In previous seasons, Coach Cal recruited the very best high school players he could find. This season, Calipari attracted top transfers Oscar Tshiebwe and Sahvir Wheeler.
Guess what? Tshiebwe averages 16.2 points and 15.3 boards per game and will probably win the Wooden Award for Player of the Year. Wheeler averages 7.1 points per game.
With Tshiebwe and Wheeler, Calipari has a couple of upperclassmen, not freshman, but upperclassmen who can dominate. That makes Kentucky one of the teams to consider backing to win it all.
Third Pick: Auburn Tigers +900
There’s a reason Auburn handled coach Bruce Pearl an unbelievable contract. The Auburn Tigers should make the Final Four and has a real shot of winning the championship.
Like Arizona and Kentucky, Auburn can beat you with their offense, 80 points per game, or defense, 66.6 allowed each contest. More importantly, Auburn is as unselfish as it gets.
Top scorer Jabari Smith averages just 15.2 points per. Wendell Green Jr. averages 4.8 assists and Walker Kessler averages 8.4 boards.
Auburn is legit. So like with Kentucky and Arizona, keep the Tigers on your radar to win the National Championship.
