The Packers Defense in 2020

There are some who will suggest that the Packers defense is not where it needs to be for this team to win the Super Bowl, but let’s not forget that they were just 1 win away from getting to the Championship Game last season. It is easy to forget that the Packers defense was in the top 10 in total yards allowed, albeit only just, giving up 334 YPG.

Breaking that number down give us a better idea of where this team might need help if they are to move up this season. They landed in 7^th in passing yards allowed per game, surrendering 221.2 YPG through the air. They were closer to the middle of the pack in run defense, giving up 112.8 YPG on the ground. It was the same deal with points allowed per game, which was 23.1.

The Packers defense had 18 takeaways last season, which included 11 INT and 7 fumble recoveries. That was enough for them to end the season with a +7 takeaway differential, which was good for 7^th best in the league.

Packers Offseason Moves

Overall, there were not a ton of changes made on the defensive side of the football. While the Packers D might not be described as elite, it is certainly good enough as to not be a major area of concern. With the addition of Eric Stokes and Shemar Jean-Charles, you can certainly argue that the secondary got better for Green Bay.

On the flipside, there were several departures on the defensive line, and while some replacements were brought in, this looks like a unit that might well take a step back this season. Whether it’s a big enough step back to become a problem remains to be seen, but it is certainly an area where the Packers could probably have done more to shore things up.

Overall, this defense does not look that much different to the one we saw last season, which is not a terrible thing, I suppose. The reality is that the Packers will go as far as Aaron Rodgers and the offense can carry them. If the D can chip in some help along the way, then the Packers will once again be one of the favorites to win the NFC.
