There is an old cliché in football that suggests defense wins championships. While there is certainly some truth to this, the fact of the matter is that if you look back at previous Super Bowl winners, you see that the vast majority had an elite QB at the helm. Yes, defense is important, but it is usually teams that are balanced on both sides of the ball that make it all the way to the promised land. Make no mistake, any team that has serious aspirations to win a Super Bowl will know that they need to be sound from top to bottom on offense and defense. Our focus here, though, is on the offensive side of things, with the Miami Dolphins the next team we are going to look at on that side of the football, so let’s dive right in.

The Dolphins Offense in 2022
After a rough 2021 season, the Dolphins hired Mike McDaniel as the head coach, with the focus on getting better on offense. Bringing in Tyreek Hill as a weapon was a move that very much signaled the intent of this team moving forward.
The moves made by the front office paid immediate dividends, with the Dolphins going 9-8 last season and clinching a Wild Card spot. The season may have been a whole lot better had QB Tua Tagovailoa stayed healthy from start to finish, as this is a very different team with him under center. In terms of passing yards, the Dolphins delivered 265.4 YPG, which was good enough for 4th and a testament to Tua’s accuracy. They fell just short of 100 YPG on the ground, which is something that needs to be improved on. Miami averaged 23.4 YPG, which left them just outside the top 10 in the NFL in that particular stat.

Dolphins Offensive Outlook for 2023
Let’s be honest here, the Dolphins offense is, at this point, reliant on Tua staying healthy. Miami looks potent with Tua under center and spraying the ball around, but they look anemic by comparison when he is on the sideline with injury. With Hill, the Dolphins have a game-changer, while Jaylen Waddle is another ridiculously good weapon.
It would be easy to give the Dolphins running game a failing grade, but I believe the numbers there were impacted by losing Tua for an extended period last season, as they were forced into running the ball in situations where they would have gone through the air with their starting QB on the field. It’s also a sign that the O-Line might need some bolstering to open running lanes, and to protect Tua. On another note with the run game, McDaniel himself admitted that they did not run the ball enough coming down the stretch, which is not that surprising when you consider that the Dolphins were chasing down a playoff spot and leaning heavily on Tua’s arm to get the job done.
The question now is whether the Dolphins can have an elite offense in 2023. They certainly have the pieces to make that happen, but there is some legitimate concern about Tua’s health. If he can last the whole season and the O-line gets better, this team could be a legit Super Bowl contender.
