Last Meeting
First of two scheduled meetings. Last year, they played just once because one was canceled due to COVID. Baylor won the lone matchup 83-69 in Austin. Davion Mitchell scored 27 points to lead the Bears. He’s now in the NBA. The Bears only attempted four free throws and made them all. Andrew Jones scored a career-high 25 points for the Longhorns, and he’s still there. Baylor has won 10 of its last 11 against Texas. The Horns lead the all-time series 163-94.
Why Bet on Texas?
Teas (18-6) was a 79-76 winner at home over No. 8 Kansas on Monday in a great game. Texas outscored Kansas 7-0 in the final minute. The Jayhawks led 76-72 before the Longhorns’ Tre Mitchell, who had missed all five of his 3-point attempts, banked one in to get the Longhorns within one.
Kansas then turned it over when Ochai Agbaji’s lob to David McCormack bounced off the front of the rim and Texas snatched the rebound. The Jayhawks then left Timmy Allen open just beyond the free-throw line for the go-ahead basket.
Allen recorded a season-high 24 points in UT’s third consecutive home win over a ranked opponent, as the Longhorns had previously defeated No. 18/20 Tennessee and No. 20/22 Iowa State. Allen converted 11-of-17 field goals and grabbed nine rebounds in 30 minutes. Tre Mitchell posted 17 points while hitting 8-of-8 free throws in 22 minutes. Marcus Carr tallied 10 points and four assists without a turnover in 34 minutes, and Andrew Jones added 10 points and two steals in 18 minutes.
Senior Courtney Ramey had primary defensive responsibility on Kansas’ leading scorer Ochai Agbaji, who entered the game averaging 20.8 ppg. Ramey limited Agbaji to 11 points while hitting 4-of-7 field goals (1-of-3 threes) and no assists with three turnovers in 38 minutes.
Texas has posted a 48-8 advantage in points off turnovers against its last two opponents following a 24-6 edge over Kansas. Mitchell enters Saturday’s game just one point shy of reaching the 1,000-point mark in his collegiate career. Mitchell has recorded 999 points in 67 career games.
UT faces its fifth consecutive Top 25 opponent Saturday. It marks just the second time in UT history that the Longhorns have played five straight games against AP Top 25 foes since the AP poll began in the 1948-49 season. Texas is 3-1 in the previous four.
Why Bet on Baylor?
Baylor (20-4) won easily at Kansas State on Wednesday, 75-60. The Bears won their seventh straight over Kansas State and reached 20 wins for the 13th time in the last 15 years. Before the current streak, Baylor had won 20 games only three times in 100 seasons. LJ Cryer, who leads the Bears in scoring at 13.9 points per game, missed his fourth straight game with a foot injury. He’s questionable for Saturday.
Jonathan Tchamwa Tchatchoua hit 9-of-10 from the floor and 2-for-3 from the line and scoring 13 of his team-high 21 points in the second half.
“We’re not a one-man show or a one-man team, and we don’t have just one leader,” said Tchamwa Tchatchoua. “Every night, we have different guys stepping up and winning games. I’m a leader more by actions and I do stuff to lead by example. It’s more like a community, and everyone brings something in.”
Baylor outscored the Wildcats 7-1 to start the second half. K-State’s chances were dimmed considerably when Markquis Nowell picked up two quick fouls and was sent to the bench with four at the 17:43 mark of the second half. The second-half surge eventually extended to 19-4 Baylor and the game was over.
Baylor won the rebounding battle, 39-31, outscored K-State, 40-24 in the paint and scored 13 points off the Wildcats’ 15 turnovers. But the biggest difference was the bench, with Dale Bonner and Jeremy Sochan adding nine and eight points, respectively, as the Bears’ three subs scored 38 points.
Baylor’s 36-7 Big 12 Conference record over the last 3 seasons is the best of any Power-5 team. Baylor’s 48-6 record over the last 2 seasons is the nation’s best among Power-5 teams. BU is 17-0 this season when winning points off turnovers and 16-0 when winning points in the paint. Baylor is the nation’s only team ranked top-40 in scoring offense (39th) and scoring defense (25th). BU has forced 10+ turnovers in 31-straight games.
