We are just a couple of weeks away from the start of the NHL playoffs, an event that a lot of sports fans believe is the best playoff in pro sports. In all, 16 teams, 8 from each conference, will head into the postseason knowing that they need to win 16 games to hoist the iconic Stanley Cup. Heading into the playoffs, there are some obvious favorites that a lot of bettors are going to key on, but sticking with one team is not necessarily the way to go, as we tend to see a lot of surprises along the way in the postseason. There is no right or wrong way to wager on hockey, but we do have some tips that will help you get the most out of wagering on the Stanley Cup playoffs.
Betting Tips for the NHL Playoffs 2023 | NHL Lines
Home Ice Advantage
Home ice advantage can prove to be a major factor when it comes to betting games, but you should not rely on it completely. You look at the Boston Bruins, the favorite to win it all this year, and you see a team that is 30-3-3 at home. It would make sense to play them every time they are in their own building, but like we said, surprises happen. One thing that I look for is a team losing their first game at home. More often than not, they will bounce back and win Game 2, knowing that hitting the road in an 0-2 hole does not bode well for the rest of the series. Similarly, I tend to play teams heading home for a Game 7.
Player Props
There are going to be nights when the odds on every game may seem that appealing. In those situations, you might want to take a look at player props instead. This is especially true when we have seen a few games from each team, as you then have a better idea of how each player is performing. There are always a few players who raise their game in the postseason and start putting up stats well beyond what they did in the regular season. You may also have a player dominating in a particular series, so try to cash in on them.
Bet On Series
While it is certainly fun to wager on individual games, it can also quickly drain your bankroll. While we are not suggesting that you don’t play individual games, we suggest that you take a look at the overall series odds and pick a winner from those. If you want to dive even deeper into this type of wager, then you might also consider picking the number of games the series will end in. This is a tricky bet, but if you look at how matchups went in the head-to-head regular season series, you might just be able to nail a few series totals just right.
Forget The Injury Report
No matter which sport you bet on, it’s generally a good idea to take a look at the injury reports for each team to see of any key players will be missing. This becomes a futile exercise in the playoffs, as teams tend to be more than a little vague when reporting injuries. A player with a broken ankle might be described as having a lower body injury. The reports give nothing away, so use your best judgement when wagering.
