It’s a pretty weak night of college basketball Monday around the nation with the only big-name program in action being former Top 5 team Michigan State, now out of the polls, facing in-state Oakland University, a solid Horizon League program. MSU is a heavy favorite on the NCAAB odds and has never lost in the series. 2023 NCAA Basketball Betting & Expert Analysis Oakland vs. Michigan State | MyBookie Sportsbook College Basketball Regular Season: November 6, 2023 – March 17, 2024 | Week 7 NCAAB

Series History
Michigan State has never lost to Oakland in 21 previous meetings but more than a few have been very competitive. Oakland is 0-13 all-time in East Lansing and the teams played there last season with Sparty winning 67-54. It was Oakland’s closest loss in the series since 2017. Michigan State-Oakland is the state’s second-biggest rivalry game in basketball, behind MSU-Michigan. And Tom Izzo says the Spartans will keep playing the Golden Grizzlies each year while he is still coach.
Why Bet on Oakland Golden Grizzlies?
The Golden Grizzlies (6-5) come off a 77-63 win at Eastern Michigan on Friday. Trey Townsend led Oakland with 22 points. Townsend was lights out from the floor and made nine of his 12 attempts and nearly came away with a double-double as he grabbed nine boards. Behind Townsend was DQ Cole and Jack Gohlke who both finished the night with 11 points.
The Grizzlies led by just three at the half but came out of the locker room on fire and built off its lead to grab its first double-digit point lead with 13:00 to go. Five quick points turned the lead to 15 as Oakland took control. Townsend continued to dominate the floor with a ferocious slam followed by five-straight from Osei Price, including one from range, to push the Golden Grizzlies lead to 20 with 6:00 to play.
Oakland shot at a .581 clip from the floor in the second half and drained three from range to improve its field goal percentage to 51.7% after a 44.4% in the first. The Eagles also improved on the floor at a .444 clip to put its total at .431. Off the glass, the Golden Grizzlies snagged 35 rebounds while the Eagles came away with 28.
Townsend ranks seventh in the Horizon League in scoring with 15.8 points per game and fourth in the league in most points scored (174). Townsend also leads the Golden Grizzlies and ranks third in the league in rebounds per game with 7.5 and is three behind the league leader for most in the Horizon League. Gohlke leads the league in three-pointers made per game (3.6) and total threes (40) and leads the nation in attempts per game from range (11.3) and ranks in the top 10 in the NCAA with makes per game.
This series was supposed to alternate yearly between The Breslin Center, the home of Michigan State in East Lansing, and the Little Caesars Arena in downtown Detroit, but Michigan State played Baylor at the LCA this past weekend, so the game against Oakland for this season will be played in East Lansing again like last season. The Golden Grizzlies have been competitive against Michigan State throughout the seasons, losing by only six points in overtime in 2015, four points in 2013, and by only one in 2010.
Oakland will have had 10 days off since its last game. It will be the third Big Ten opponent this year for Oakland, which lost by six at Ohio State and by 11 at Illinois to open the season. Earlier this season, Oakland did upset another power conference team in Xavier, 78-76, behind Townsend’s game-high 28 points, including a game-clinching jumper with 26 seconds left.

Why Bet on Michigan State Spartans?
Michigan State is one of the nation’s most disappointing teams at 5-5 but Tom Izzo only really cares about March and the Spartans come off their best win of the season by far on Saturday, 88-64 over No. 6 Baylor at a neutral site in Detroit. Sparty had a 30-point first-half lead and never was threatened.
“It was a step in the right direction,” Izzo said. “It shows you what we can be against a very, very good team.”
MiSU went into the break with a 28-point lead, 45-17, but Baylor came racing out in the second half and forced four turnovers over the first two minutes as the Bears pulled to within 21 points, 47-26, on a layup from Jayden Nunn. The Spartans responded with a 9-3 burst and took a 56-29 lead on an alley-oop from junior guard Jaden Akins at the 15:51 mark. Baylor would get no closer than 23 points the rest of the way and the Spartans pushed the lead to 30 points for the second time in the game with 4:23 left when AJ Hoggard fed star Tyson Walker for an alley-oop, making it 78-48.
Walker scored a game-high 25 points to lead three players in double figures, adding four assists, three rebounds and five steals. Hoggard finished with 14 points, five assists and three steals and sophomore guard Tre Holloman added 11 points, two rebounds and two steals off the bench.
Walker has scored at least 20 points five times this year. He has now scored 987 points in 79 career games at Michigan State and needs 13 to reach the 1,000-point mark as a Spartan. Walker leads the Spartans this season with an average of 20.8 points per game off 74-of-153 from the field and ranks third in the Big Ten in scoring. Walker also had five steals, his second game this season with at least 5 (he had 6 in the season opener against James Madison).
The Spartans are 5-1 when leading at the half this season. MSU shot a season-high 63.3 percent from the floor and it was the first time the team shot at least 60 percent from the floor since a Dec. 31, 2017 win against Savannah State. The Spartans are 5-0 when out-shooting their opponent in 2023. MSU held a 29-20 edge in rebounding and the team is 4-0 when controlling the boards. The Spartans also had a season-high 15 steals, the most by the team since 16 against Wisconsin on March 7, 2013.
“We did what a lot of you have seen a lot, we guarded, rebounded, we knocked a couple out of bound plays. They capitalized on a couple of our turnovers they hit two threes were both from us turning the ball over, we still made some silly plays, but I thought we just kept grinding it and that’s who we need to be. What’s funny is you can score 80 plus points against a good team by grinding it, that’s a good deal,” Izzo said.
Although sitting at .500, the Spartans outscore its opposition, 73.9-64.7, and edge their opponents in field goal percentage, 46.4%-39.3%. The Spartans also win the battle off the glass with an average of 1.4 more rebounds per game and allow 34.6.
