Don’t Miss Your Shot at Olympic Tennis Gold: Expert Betting Advice and Odds

When the Olympic Committee decided to allow professional athletes to take part in the games, there were plenty who objected, but the reality is that it has helped bring more eyes to the Olympic Games.

Tennis is one of the sports that has benefited from pros being part of the tournament, making it one of the most watched and wagered on events every 4 years.

My Analysis

We are getting deep into the tournament on both the men’s and women’s side of things, but which athletes will walk away with the medals when all is said and done?

That is what we are going to try and figure out here, so let’s take a look at the progress in both tournaments as we try to pick some winners.

^

Men’s Olympic Tennis

At the top of the bracket, one of the quarterfinals has already been set.

Novak Djokovic, who many consider to be a lock for the gold medal has made it to this point without breaking too much of a sweat.

He has won all 3 games and has yet to drop a single set. He will face Stefanos Tsitsipas, who needed all 3 sets to get out of the first round.

He overcame that one to win the next 2 matches without dropping a set.

It will be either Alexander Zverev or Alexei Poyrin moving on to the quarterfinals.

They already know who they will face, as Lorenzo Musetti has already punched his ticket into the next round.

There is a similar scenario in the bottom half of the bracket, with one of the quarterfinals already set, while two games played today will decide who else is moving on.

Caper Ruud and Francisco Cerundolo will meet in one of those games, while Felix Auger-Aliassime will face Danil Medvedev, with the winners of those games meeting up in the quarters.

The matchup that has already been decided will see Carlos Alcaraz and Tommy Paul, both of whom have been brilliant, meeting up.

^

Women’s Olympic Tennis

Over on the women’s side of things, the quarterfinals are taking place as I write this piece.

Danielle Collins has had to scrap to get to this stage of the tournament and will have another tough matchup against Iga Swiatek, who is yet to drop a set on her way to this point in the tournament.

The winner of that one will go up against either Angelique Kerber or Qinwen Zheng, who are tied up at one set apiece at the time of writing.

We figured that one would be a battle, as both women are considered a good pick to be on the medal podium.

In the bottom half of the draw, we already know one of the women who will be in the semi-final and one step closer to the gold medal, with Anna Karolina Schmiedlova taking out Barbora Krejcikova in straight sets.

She is now waiting to see who he will face in the semi-finals, with Marta Kostyuk and Donna Vekic set to meet later today.

Olympic Tennis Expert Picks

The 2024 Paris Olympics will essentially serve as a fifth major this year for both the ATP and WTA.

The Olympic tennis tournaments will take place at Roland Garros, which just hosted the French Open less than two months ago, and to the surprise of nobody defending French Open champions Carlos Alcaraz and Iga Swiatek are the betting favorites.

Alexander Zverev and Belinda Bencic are the defending Olympic gold medalists.

Olympic Tennis Top 3 Players

Carlos Alcaraz

Carlos Alcaraz, winner of the 2024 French Open and Wimbledon tournaments, was just 18 years old during the Tokyo 2020 Olympics and didn’t participate.

Three years later and he has been a world No. 1 and is a four-time grand slam champion, not to mention won each of the last two grand slams.

He is the unquestionable betting favorite and likely gold medal winner, especially since the tournament is being played at Roland Garros, where he just won about two months prior.

Alcaraz only turned 21 in May and is also already a 15-time winner on the ATP Tour.

He just beat Novak Djokovic in straight sets in the Wimbledon final and is playing at a higher level than ever before.

He is 33-6 overall this season and has a career record on clay courts of 138-35.

Jannik Sinner

Prior to the French Open and Wimbledon, it appeared as though Jannik Sinner would have been the Olympic gold medal betting favorite.

However, Alcaraz has been dominant at the last two grand slams and has two wins over Sinner this season.

The young Italian, meanwhile, hasn’t necessarily performed poorly – he still only has four losses this season and remains world No. 1 – and could certainly win in Paris, although it seems unlikely that anyone can beat Alcaraz on clay right now.

Sinner has had success recently on the international stage, however.

He was the key factor in Italy’s 2023 Davis Cup victory late last season and carried that momentum into winning his first grand slam at the 2024 Australian Open.

Novak Djokovic

There’s pretty much only one thing Djokovic hasn’t accomplished in tennis – winning an Olympic gold medal.

He won bronze in 2008 and looked poised to capture gold in 2020, but suffered a surprising defeat 6-1, 3-6, 1-6 to Zverev in the semi-finals.

He’s nearing the end of his career, even though he is coming off a second consecutive Wimbledon final, so this will almost certainly be his last chance to win Olympic gold.

Djokovic is 23-7 this season.

He has already equaled his loss total from each of the past three seasons despite playing significantly fewer matches.

He is 209-43 in his career on clay courts.

WTA Singles Odds

Olympic Tennis: Top 3 Players

Iga Swiatek

As is the case with Alcaraz, it’s hard to see anybody beating Iga Swiatek at Roland Garros.

The world No. 1 had a tough showing at Wimbledon, losing in the third round, but grass isn’t her specialty.

She was dominant, however, in the 2024 French Open, beating Jasmine Paolini 6-2, 6-1 in the final and Mirra Andreeva 6-3, 6-1 in the semi-finals.

She lost just one set in the tournament and became only the third woman to win three straight titles at Roland Garros in the Open Era.

Swiatek was the sixth seed in Tokyo and lost in the second round of the hard courts tournament.

It should be a different story on clay, especially at a venue where she has had so much recent success.

Coco Gauff

Coco Gauff is certainly a capable competitor, having won the 2023 US Open, but will be in tough if she matches up against Swiatek, to whom she lost in straight sets at the 2024 French Open. Gauff withdrew prior to the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, so this will be her first Games.

She is 1-11 against Swiatek in 12 career matches, so her best hope at a gold medal is likely to avoid playing the world No. 1.

Gauff is 35-11 this season.

She won her seventh career title early this season in Auckland and has reached five semi-finals, including the Australian Open and French Open.

She’s a good pick to win the upcoming US Open in August/September, but not so much in Paris.

Elena Rybakina

Elena Rybakina reached the semi-finals at Wimbledon and is currently ranked No. 4 in the world.

She has a 40-8 record this season, including 12-2 on clay courts.

She made the quarter-finals at Roland Garros before losing to Paolini in straight sets.

She won three titles and was runner-up at two other events this season.

Gold Medal Tennis Predictions

While it feels safe picking the betting favorites, it really is tough to imagine anyone else winning at Roland Garros, where Alcaraz and Swiatek have recently won grand slams, not to mention the fact they’re the best clay court players on the ATP and WTA, respectively.

Picks: Carlos Alcaraz (ATP) and Iga Swiatek (WTA)

2020 Tokyo Olympics: Tennis Betting Events During the Week

Previous Betting News

Big names on the men’s side and women’s side have dominated Olympic Tennis. Daniil Medvedev, Alexander Zverev, and the world’s top player, Novak Djokovic, continue their quest for gold this week. On the women’s side, Japanese star Naomi Osaka is likely to have to play Elena Rybakina or Karolina Pliskova if she hopes to grab gold. Keep reading for information on third-round matches at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics so you can get ready to wager against their Olympics Betting odds.

2020 Tokyo – Tennis Betting Preview for this Week’s Events

Olympics Tennis Events During the Week

When: Women – Tuesday, July 27 – Men – TBD

Olympic Tennis Women’s Tournament

Marketa Vondrousova / Naomi Osaka

Vondrousova has looked great in a couple of matches. But she faces a rejuvenated and motivated Naomi Osaka on Tuesday. Osaka has yet to lose a set during the Olympics. She should have no trouble winning this.

Olympic Tennis Pick: Naomi Osaka

Karolina Pliskova / Camila Giorgi

Like Osaka, Karolina Pliskova won her first couple of Olympic matches. Unlike Osaka, Pliskova struggled in her second match versus Carla Suarez Navarro. Pliskova required 4 sets to beat Navarro. Camila Giorgi took care of Jennifer Brady in the first round and Elena Vesnina in the second round. Both wins happened in straight sets. Giorgi has a shot at the upset.

Olympic Tennis Pick: Camila Giorgi

Maria Sakkari / Elina Svitolina

This should be one of the Olympic’s most competitive matches. Both Sakkari and Svitolina compete at the highest-level. Sakkari won her first couple of matches in straight sets. Svitolina required 3 sets to beat both Laura Seigemund and Ajla Tomljanovic. But although Svitolina had to work hard to get to this point, she could be ready to pounce. Svitolina gets the nod.

Olympic Tennis Pick: Elina Svitolina

Donna Vekic / Elena Rybakina

Vekic has played 8 sets in 2 matches. She should be too tired to take on Elena Rybakina. So even though one of Vekic’s victories was against Aryna Sabalenka, Vekic had to work much too hard to get it. Rybakina should roll to a 2-set, maybe, 3-set victory.

Olympic Tennis Pick: Elena Rybakina

Olympic Tennis Men’s Singles

Fabio Fognini / Daniil Medvedev

Once in a while, Fabio Fognini plays tennis like one of the best in the world. Daniil Medvedev won the 2020 ATP Championship. So we know he can play tennis. But Medvedev has played okay, not great, at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. That could open the door for Fognini to pull off the upset.

Olympic Tennis Pick: Fabio Fognini

Pablo Carreno Busta / Dominik Koepfer

Koepfer struggled against Facundo Bagnis in his first round match. The German player bounced back with a nice 2-set victory over Max Purcell in his second. Pablo Carreno Busta got past Marin Cilic in his last. Carreno Busta had to work hard. But his opponent, Cilic, is a tough customer. Give Carreno Busta the nod.

Olympic Tennis Pick: Pablo Carreno Busta

Alexander Zverev / Nikoloz Basilashvili

Zverev has won both of his Olympic matches in straight sets. Basilashvili is a good tennis player, but Alexander is on a roll. Zverev has won a couple of singles titles this year. He wants to add a gold or silver medal. Expect Zverev to grab the victory, probably in 2 sets.

Olympic Tennis Pick: Alexander Zverev

Novak Djokovic / Alejandro Davidovich Fokina

If Djokovic wants the gold medal, it’s his. A player like Alejandro Davidovich Fokina shouldn’t win more than a few games against Djokovic. Tennis handicappers should be surprised if this goes past a couple of sets.

Previous Betting News

The current no.1 and the newly crowned 20-time Grand Slam champion, Novak Djoković, travels to Tokyo looking to add another gold medal to his vast collection, while the home favorite Naomi Osaka looks to bounce back after two unexpected exits from the French Open and Wimbledon earlier this year.

While the two storylines are definitely exciting to follow, there will be plenty of tennis players who will look to spoil Djoković’s and Osaka’s plan at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. As the most prestigious sporting event in the world, the Tokyo Olympics will bring together some of the biggest names in professional sports, who will duke it out at Ariake Tennis Park Centre Court for the eternal glory that comes with winning the Olympic gold medal.

In today’s Tennis preview, we take a look at the main names to watch out for at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and provide you with all the information you’ll ever need to place bets on Olympics Tennis betting odds.

Men’s Olympic Tennis Preview – Djoković Looking For His First Olympic Gold Medal

Novak Djoković has this month passed Roger Federer in the longest time spent as the world no.1 and is currently the undisputed best tennis player in the world. The Serb has already won three Grand Slams on the season and is only one short of joining the elite club of players, who have won all three major tournaments in a single year.

Despite his success on the year, Djoković has not impressed at the Olympics yet. He finished third in 2008 in Beijing and suffered a round-one elimination in Rio in 2016. In London (2012), Djoković had made it to the semi-finals when he got eliminated by Andy Murray.

Despite his lack of success over the years, Djoković has stated that he is motivated to fight for gold in Japan since the Olympic medal is one of few things missing to round up his impressive career.

His chances to achieve just became that much greater after Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal both withdrew from the tournament. And while Djoković is by far the biggest betting favorite to win, Olympics events rarely end as planned, leaving many wondering whether Djokovović will finally end the long wait or will he fall flat as he had in the previous three iterations.

Women’s Olympic Tennis Preview – Osaka and Barty Favoured to Succeed

While the men’s side of the competition is dominated by one name, the women’s singles tennis tournaments present us with a far more competitive field. The home favorite Naomi Osaka and Ashleigh Barty both travel to Japan as heavy favorites, with several names not too far behind in the betting market.

The 2020 Tokyo Olympics will serve as a redemption tournament for Osaka, who withdrew from the previous two Major tournaments, citing personal reasons. Meanwhile, her main competitor, Barty, stormed to win Wimbledon and secured her tag as the one to beat in Tokyo.

Joining the two is a long list of elite players, which unfortunately won’t feature some big names. Serena Williams, the US’s best chance to win gold, will not be competing, and neither will Canada’s Bianca Andreescu, who withdrew, citing pandemic-related challenges.

With the two out of the race, their nation’s best chance to win women’s singles tennis gold are world no.15 Jennifer Brady and world no.73 Leylah Annie for the US and Canada, respectively.

Neither is expected to win in Tokyo, as reflected in the Tennis betting odds. However, there’s always room for upset wins and miracle runs – and if there is one competition known for featuring just that, it’s the Olympic Games.

Rio 2016 Men’s Tennis Expert Betting Pick

Previous Betting News

World No. 1 Novak Djokovic of Serbia was the big favorite to win a gold medal in Olympic tennis on the men’s side but that field is now wide open after Djokovic was upset by Argentina’s Juan Martin del Potro on Sunday. Your overall favorite is now reigning Wimbledon champion and world No. 2 Andy Murray of Great Britain on Olympic tennis odds.

Here’s a Closer Look at the Rio 2016 Men’s Tennis Expert Betting Pick

Del Potro had been off the ATP Tour for long stretches in the past three years due to wrist injuries and had often relied on a one-handed slice backhand since his 2016 comeback. Against Djokovic, del Potro’s wrist appeared fully healed as he native drove the ball with power off both wings, finishing with 41 winners in the 7-6 (4), 7-6 (2) win. Unlike in most men’s tournaments on the ATP Tour, this isn’t best of five sets but best of three. Del Potro also ended Djokovic’s medal hopes in London four years ago, prevailing in the bronze medal match.

Djokovic became the first man for 47 years to hold all four Grand Slam titles by winning the French Open in June. He suffered a shocking third-round loss to American Sam Querrey at Wimbledon but won his 30th Masters title in Toronto last week.

Del Potro will face Portugal’s Joao Sousa in the second round on Monday. The 27-year- old, who has dropped to 141st in the world after two years of injury problems, did not face a single break point on his serve against the 12-time Grand Slam champion Djokovic. Del Potro is a -445 favorite on tennis odds against Sousa.

Murray, who won gold in London four years ago, opened by beating Serbian Viktor Troicki 6-3, 6-2. Murray got the ball rolling when he broke in the sixth game to take a 4-2 lead. Troicki had a chance in the next game to break back but missed an easy volley. Murray held for 5-2 and went on to take the set. In the second Murray created another break at 1-1 with a wonderful running cross court winner and didn’t look back. Murray was pleased to tuck the first win under his belt.

“I was a bit nervous at the start having not played for a few weeks,” Murray said, “and it was my first match on hard courts for a while and in tricky windy conditions. But I did pretty well. It was a good start.”

If Murray were to win his second Olympic gold medal, it would give him 18 wins in a row to confirm he is in the most consistent form in his career. He has lost just once in his past 24 matches – the final at Roland Garros to Djokovic – and in the Olympics, he has not lost a singles match since August 2008. Next up is the Argentinian Juan Mónaco, who beat Mirza Basic 6-2, 6-2 and has taken two matches off Murray in five attempts, his last win six years ago.

The other favorite with Djokovic out now is Spain’s Rafael Nadal, the 2008 gold medalist in Beijing. He dropped only three games in his return to the Olympics, winning 6-2, 6-1 against Argentine Federico Delbonis. The third seed won 63 percent of his service points. Nadal, who missed the 2012 Olympics due to injury, now faces Andreas Seppi on Tuesday and is a -525 betting favorite.

But Nadal isn’t healthy, either. The win over Delbonis was Nadal’ first match since the French Open.

“If there is not Olympic Games I will not be here competing,” said Nadal, “because the wrist needs a little bit more time to be 100 percent recovered. But is only one time every four years, the experience in an Olympic Games is something unforgettable. I missed the last one in London so I didn’t want to miss this one.”

My Expert Pick

Murray beats del Potro for the gold medal.

Rio 2016 Women’s Tennis Free Betting Pick

Previous Betting News

While the men’s tennis draw appears wide open at the Rio Olympics with a few big names like Roger Federer missing the event and world No. 1 Novak Djokovic losing his opening match over the weekend, on the women’s side it would be an upset if world No. 1 and American Serena Williams doesn’t win another gold medal and she’s a heavy favorite to do so on Olympic tennis odds.

Let’s Take a Look at the Rio 2016 Women’s Tennis Free Betting Pick

But Serena won’t repeat as Olympic doubles champion as her and sister Venus were upset in their first match. They had won three straight gold medals but lost in straight sets to the Czech Republic’s Lucie Safarova and Barbora Strycova. It was the siblings’ first Olympic loss together, having won gold as a pair at the Sydney 2000 Games, Beijing 2008 Games and London 2012 Games.

By Sunday night, Team USA had competed in 12 tennis matches at the Rio Olympics — four in men’s singles, four in women’s singles, two in women’s doubles and two in men’s doubles. Of those 12 matches, the U.S. lost half. Other than Serena, the only Americans left in singles are Madison Keys on the women’s side and Steve Johnson for the men. The top two men’s singles players for the USA, John Isner and Sam Querrey, opted to the skip the Olympics to focus on the U.S. hard-court swing that culminates with the U.S. Open later this month.

In singles, Serena rolled over Daria Gavrilova of Australia, 6-4, 6-2, on Centre Court at the Olympic Tennis Centre. The heavy wind made conditions difficult and both players seemed tentative in the firstset. Serena is the defending gold medalist in Olympic singles.

She will next face Alize Cornet and is a -1500 favorite. The Frenchwoman is currently ranked at No. 49 and has one title under her belt in 2016, taking the crown in Hobart at the start of the year. She beat Canadian Eugenie Bouchard in the final. Cornet had a tough first round match with Sweden’s Johanna Larsson but she was victorious 6-1, 2-6, 6-3. Serena and Cornet have played six times. Williams won the first three and Cornet the last three. Their most recent meeting was in 2014 at the Wuhan Open. Williams was leading 6-5 in the first set but withdrew from the match due to illness.

The second-favorite to win gold is Germany’s Angelique Kerber, who is No. 2 in the world. Kerber had reached the semifinals at the Canadian Masters where she was beaten by Simona Halep in three sets. She had lost the final at Wimbledon and had to retire from the WTA Bastad in the second round. Kerber opened this event winning the last five games to battle past Colombia’s Mariana Duque-Mariño, 6-3, 7-5. On Monday Kerber will meet a player that has troubled her in the past in Canada’s Bouchard. She beat American Sloane Stephens on Saturday to claim her maiden Olympic victory. Bouchard has won the past three meetings vs. Kerber.

Agnieszka Radwanska was the highest seed to fall in the first round. The No.4 seed fell to China’s Zheng Saisai in straight sets. Seeds went 12-4 in Round 1 in Rio.

My Free Pick

The fact Serena lost her doubles match actually could prove beneficial for her stamina, etc. She will repeat as the gold medalist.
