The English Premier League’s final matchweek doesn’t happen until late May. But as we head into February, the odds indicate Man City is a lock to win the title. Does that mean soccer handicappers shouldn’t look at Liverpool’s and Chelsea’s chances? Not at all. Keep reading for Premier League odds on the favorite, the top upset, and the best long shot pick to win the 2021-2022 English Premier League.
English Premier League Title Winner Favorite, Upset, Long Shot
2021-2022 English Premier League Season
- When: Aug. 13, 2021 – May 22, 2022
Favorite: Manchester City -1587
After 23 EPL matches, the Sky Blues have 18 wins, 3 draws, and just 2 losses. Man City’s 9-point over Liverpool suggests they should easily win the Premier, which is why City is such a huge favorite.
-1587 implies Manchester City is a lock to take the title. They’d have to implode to lose it. By imploding, we mean not only must Kevin De Bruyne end up on the sidelines, but so must Gabriel Jesus and even then Pep Guardiola’s squad could end up taking the title.
Stranger things have happened in the Premier League, though, like Leicester winning the championship. So don’t blindly back Man City. Especially don’t blindly back them at the odds. If you can make a case for Pool or the Blues, which we’re going to try and do right now, consider backing a dog.
Upset: Liverpool +390
The first reason to back the Reds is because of the odds. Laying -1587 on the Sky Blues to continue to dominate is a tough bet to make.
9 points is difficult to overcome. But 9 points equates to 3 matches. So Liverpool could win 3 matches and Man City could lose 3 matches. If the two teams play close to even in the rest of their games, there is a chance for the Reds to overtake the Sky Blues.
The +390 reflects the belief that it could happen. If Pool had a worse shot, they’d offer much higher odds. Not only that, but there are plenty of matchweeks left. So consider Liverpool a live upset candidate.
Long Shot: Chelsea FC +4800
Liverpool has 48 points. Chelsea shows 47 points. If Pool is a live upset candidate at their odds, the Blues are an overlay at their odds.
Chelsea hasn’t dominated the way they did when Thomas Tuchel first became the manager. That’s okay. The Blues have time to become a viable contender to Man City’s crown.
Not only that, but in the last head-to-head on Sep. 25, Man City required a goal from De Bruyne in the 70th minute to beat Chelsea 1-0.
The Blues could be on the verge of turning things around. Chelsea dominated Tottenham 2-0 on Jan. 23. If they get on a roll, and City starts dropping matches, who knows? The Blues could leapfrog Pool and then become second choice to the Sky Blues.
There’s plenty of soccer left to play. So at +4800, the team from Stamford Bridge is playable for sure.
