Men’s NCAA Basketball Betting Picks & Options for the Best Weekend Games

Friday: Southern Methodist Mustangs vs Utah State Aggies (-11)

There were a couple of surprises this week in the college basketball world, and one of the largest was Utah State falling to Weber State on their own floor. The previously undefeated Aggies were -1600 on the moneyline and still somehow managed to disappoint.

Apparently, Ryan Odom’s team took that loss personally, as they absolutely destroyed a pretty decent Seattle team on Thursday evening. On Friday, the Aggies will play SMU in the Diamond Head Classic, and now that the Aggies are reinvigorated, you can expect them to cover this number.

Odom’s club has the advantage on both ends of the floor, and they remain one of the best three-point shooting teams in the nation. On the other hand, Southern Methodist is mediocre on both ends of the floor.

With Thursday’s 85 points performance in a victory over Iona, the Mustangs are just 301st in the nation in effective field goal percentage offense. They don’t turn their opponents over, and they don’t defend the three-point line well. Utah State shoots the ball very well and appears to be on the warpath.

Utah State is one of the best teams in the Mountain West against the spread, and a minor hiccup against an in-state rival shouldn’t deter you until it becomes a trend. Take the Aggies.

Sunday: Depaul Blue Demons at Creighton Bluejays (-14)

Depaul had some believers at the beginning of the season when they started 3-0, but Tony Stubblefield’s group has been tremendously inconsistent this season.

In their last game against a Northwestern team that was favored by (-8.5), Depaul underperformed the number by 29.5 points, falling by 38. While you could blame that on a hostile road game environment, it’s only 14 miles from Chicago to Evanston.

Creighton, meanwhile, was able to break their six-game skid on Thursday evening when they hosted Butler. The Bluejays dismantled the Bulldogs in the second half by completely destroying them on the glass 37-19. Much of that was due to the return of big man Ryan Kalkbrenner who had missed the previous three games.

The Creighton leading scorer returned with a vengeance, logging 19 points, four rebounds, two assists, two blocks, and a steal. His presence also seemed to inspire Greg McDermott’s talented wings as his team shot 8-16 from behind the arc.

Neither team is setting the world on fire against the spread, but at least Creighton is 7-6 ATS, while Depaul is 5-7. However, Creighton is 7-3 against the number when Kalkbrenner plays, which is enough to wager on against a Depaul team that underperforms the number by 5.0 points per game on the road. Take the Blue Jays to cover at home as they look to get back on track.
