2018 FIFA World Cup Betting Review: Day 6

Written by on June 20, 2018

Day 6 at the 2018 World Cup in Russia saw the first set of matches in the group stage come to a close, while also giving us the first of Matchday 2 games. It was a day of big surprises, especially in Group H, where the standings are the exact opposite of what we expected. It was not a good day to play the favorites, as you will see from our recap below. You will also see that there are no real trends developing just yet, save perhaps for the moneyline, which has been playing rather true to form. Let’s take a look at the trio of games from Day 6 and how the betting action at MyBookie Sportsbook played out.

2018 FIFA World Cup Betting Review: Day 6

Colombia 1 – 2 Japan

Game Stats

  • Attempts: Colombia 8 / Japan 14
  • On-Target: Colombia 3 / Japan 6
  • Off-Target: Colombia 1 / Japan 5
  • Blocked: Colombia 4 / Japan 3
  • Woodwork: Colombia 0 / Japan 0
  • Corners: Colombia 3 / Japan 6
  • Off-sides: Colombia 2 / Japan 1
  • Possession: Colombia 41 / Japan 59
We did not have to wait very long for drama in this one, as Japan was given a penalty in the first 5 minutes. To makes matters worse for Colombia, the referee deemed the handball that led to the penalty to be a denial of an obvious scoring opportunity. That meant a red car and Colombia down to 10 men, as well as being a goal down after Kagawa slotted the spot kick home. You need to give credit to Colombia for continuing to battle, though, and they got level before the half direct from a free kick that crept just over the line. It was all Japan in the second half, as they began to take advantage of the extra man, creating chance after chance and finally getting the 2-1 winner, coming in on the moneyline as the underdog at +400. That took the moneyline to 9-3-3 in favor of the favorites. The total went OVER to take the O/U to 6-8-1. Japan covered the spread, leaving the favorites just 6-7-2 there.

Poland 1 – 2 Senegal

Game Stats

  • On-Target: Poland 4 / Senegal 2
  • Off-Target: Poland 5 / Senegal 4
  • Blocked: Poland 1 / Senegal 2

  • Corners: Poland 3 / Senegal 3
  • Off-sides: Poland 3 / Senegal 3
  • Possession: Poland 57 / Senegal 43
We were not done with the surprises for the day, as Senegal became the first African team to get a win at this 2018 World Cup. They deservedly took the lead before half-time with a rather fortuitous own goal, but their luck got even better in the second half. The referee inexplicably allowed an injured Senegal player to return to the field just as the Africans were launching an attack. Senegal became one of the 2018 World Cup Betting favorites to win Group H. The Polish defenders did not see him, which allowed the player to sneak in behind the back line and finish off quite tidily. Poland continued to fight and got a goal back later in the game, but it was too little too late. Senegal won at odds of +260, for just the 4th underdog win thus far. We had another OVER, taking the O/U to 7-8-1, and the dog covered again for the 8th time in this tournament.

Russia 3 – 1 Egypt

Game Stats

  • Attempts: Russia 11 / Egypt 13
  • On-Target: Russia 3 / Egypt 1
  • Off-Target: Russia 5 / Egypt 8
  • Blocked: Russia 3 / Egypt 4
  • Woodwork: Russia 0 / Egypt 0
  • Corners: Russia 7 / Egypt 4
  • Off-sides: Russia 0 / Egypt 0
  • Possession: Russia 47 / Egypt 53
The big story prior to the start of this game was the return of Mo Salah to the Egyptian line-up. It was certainly a huge boost for an Egypt team needing a win to stay alive in the World Cup, but it would prove to not be enough. It was a tight, goalless first half, but the game broke open 2 minutes into the second when Russia went ahead through an own goal. That seemed to dampen the spirits of the Egyptians, who found themselves 3 down at the hour mark. They did get a consolation goal later in the game via a Mo Salah penalty, but there really was no way back at that point. Russia won as the favorites at odds of -110. We got our third OVER of the day, and Russia was able to cover the – ½ spread.
