We now jump ahead to Thursday for the lone game on the Liga MX schedule, and while it is the only game on this day, it is certainly one worth talking about. Of course, all the focus is on Club America, who, as mentioned earlier, just picked up their 3rd straight championship. It doesn’t seem to matter where they land in the final table, as they turn into an unbeatable force once they hit the playoffs.

America had to go on the road to start the Clausura, picking up a 1-0 win over Queretaro. It was not a good start to the Clausura for Tijuana, as they were soundly beaten 4-2 by Cruz Azul in their opening game. The last meeting between these teams came in the Apertura play-in game, ending 2-2 before America won on penalties.

One of the great things about the Liga MX seasons being split in two is that you have some recent form to draw upon even though we are still just in the second week of the new season. Necaxa started the Clausura with a 2-1 loss to Pumas, which means that they have now lost 3 of their last 5 games, with draws coming in the other 2 games.

It is not a great run of form and one that is going to be tough to pull out of, even with this game coming at home. Chivas ended the Apertura season with ack-to-back losses, but the time off seems to have helped, as they opened up this season with a 2-1 win over Santos Laguna. Chivas has dominated this matchup, going 12-2-5, so I expect them to win again.

Toluca +110 vs Monterrey +226 (Draw +248)

You cannot predict the future standings in the league based off of one game, but even with that, you have to be impressed with the start that Toluca has made to the Clausura. Their Apertura season ended with a pair of 2–0 losses to America, which is not that awful when you consider they were facing the future champions.

Toluca was able to put that aside and get things off to a winning start in Matchday 1 with a 4-2 win over Tijuana. Monterrey made it all the way to the Championship Game last season before losing to America, so they have to be considered a threat this season. They will be a little disappointed with their 1-1 tie with Puebla in Matchday 1, but this is another tough one in the making.
