UEFA Champions League Best Goalkeepers before the Matchday 7

UEFA Champions League Best Goalkeepers before the Matchday 7

When talking about the best players in any sport, it is natural to gravitate toward players on the offensive side of things.

It is the players who rack up points or goals for fun that get all the press, but you also have to consider the old adage about defense winning championships.

Champions League Live Betting Analysis

In soccer, the goalkeeper is the last line of defense, and he is often the player that can be the difference between a team winning or losing, especially in tight games.

Right now, there are 32 teams taking part in the Champions League, with the UEFA official website delivering all the goalkeeping stats you could ask for.

They have an odd way of rankings keepers, with shots saved taking precedence, but we are going to dog deeper to find who we believe to be the 5 best goalkeepers in the Champions League this season.

Emiliano Martinez: Aston Villa

In terms of saves, UEFA has Martinez sitting in 5th place with 28 saves, and while that number is impressive, it does not tell the whole story. Martinez is a bit of a character that fans love to hate, but you cannot deny how good he is between the sticks.

He has surrendered just 3 goals in 6 games in this tournament, while also delivering 4 clean sheets. That has helped Villa take 5th place in the league table through those 6 games.

Mike Maignan: AC Milan

The Milan goalkeeper is sitting second in the UEFA stats table with 30 saves across the 6 games that he has played, and while he has yet to deliver a clean sheet, he has surrendered just 8 goals in that period.

He is also proving to be dominant in his box, registering 17 ball claims though those 6 games, while his distribution has also been excellent. Milan is in 12th place right now.

Thibaut Courtois: Real Madrid

I think we can all agree that Real Madrid are not delivering the goods the way we expected, but I also think they are a better team when Courtois is available to play, as he has been in 4 games during this Champions League campaign.

Despite playing 2 games less than most of the keepers, he is still in the top 10 in saves with 23, surrendering 7 goals during this stretch.

Yann Sommer: Inter

You can argue about the validity of certain goalkeeping stats all you want, but when you have surrendered just 1 goal in 6 games, as Sommer has, you deserve to be in a list of the best goalkeepers in the tournament to this point.

Sommer has not had to make as many saves as many of the other keepers in this tournament, but when called upon, he has delivered the goods.

David Raya: Arsenal

While trophies have been hard to come from for Arsenal, they are consistently in the conversation for silverware. Raya has helped the Gunners defense in a massive way, giving up just 2 goals through 6 games. He has not had to face a ton of shots, making 15 saves overall, but that tends to be the case with good teams.

Some will argue that it’s tougher to make the big save when you have not been busy for large portions of the game.

2021 Best Goalkeepers Champions League

Who are the best goalkeepers in the 2020-2021 UEFA Champions League? With goalies like Bayern’s Manuel Neuer and Paris Saint-Germain’s Keylor Navas stepping onto the pitch, the two at the top may surprise you.  Let’s take a closer look at some of the best goalkeepers at the moment so you can keep betting against their Champions League odds.

UCL: Man City’s Ederson Leads List of Most Effective Goalkeepers

2020 – 2021 UEFA Champions League

  • When: Aug. 8, 2020 – May 29, 2021

UCL Quarterfinals Teams & Goalkeepers

  • Bayern Munich – Manuel Neuer
  • Dortmund – Roman Burki
  • Chelsea – Edouard Mendy
  • Liverpool – Alisson
  • Manchester City – Ederson
  • Paris Saint-Germain – Keylor Navas
  • Porto – Augustin Marchesin
  • Real Madrid – Thibaut Courtois

Which two goalies have impressed the most so far this Champions League Season?

Mendy and Ederson have dominated. Both have 6 clean sheets in 7 matches. Of the two, Edouard Mendy has impressed more.

Nothing against Ederson. Manchester City’s goalie has been awesome in both the Champions League and in the EPL. But Ederson steps onto the pitch with, arguably, the best club team in the world.

Man City’s defense is second-to-none. So he has an advantage that Mendy doesn’t. Edouard plays for Chelsea. The Blues have been great, but their roster doesn’t compare to Man City’s. Mendy’s the goalie MVP so far this Champions League.

Name the three teams that wouldn’t be in the quarters without their excellent goalkeepers?

Man City could probably survive without Ederson. Dortmund would without Burki because Erling Haaland is dominating.

No way Chelsea would have survived without Edouard Mendy. Alisson at Liverpool and Augustin Marchesin with Porto are the other two. Allison has 4 clean sheets in 5 matches while Marchesin has 4 clean sheets in 7 matches.

Pool’s Champions League form has been fantastic. The Reds dominated a very good squad in RB Leipzig to make it to the quarterfinals. But Liverpool’s Premier League form is a mess.

Pool seems to be concentrating more on a UCL title than on an EPL title. If Liverpool hopes to beat Bayern, Man City, or even Chelsea, Allison must continue to shine.

Porto upset Juventus in the Round of 16 to stamp their ticket to the Champions League Elite Eight. Porto has no shot if Marchesin doesn’t play great in every UCL match.

Should Bayern fans worry about Neuer’s form? How about PSG and the way Navas has played?

The pressure is on for both Neuer and Navas. Manuel Neuer is a great goalie, no doubt, but he’s produced 2 clean sheets in 6 matches.

Yes, Bayern dominates. But the final eight is strong. Chelsea, Man City, and even Paris Saint-Germain are good enough to upset Bayern unless Neuer is in his best form.

Navas could be PSG’s undoing. Keylor has 2 clean sheets in 8 matches. If Paris must play a team that concentrates on defense, like Chelsea, they could lose because Mendy won’t give up a goal while Navas has in 6-of-8.

The 2020-2021 UEFA Champions League draws for their quarterfinals and semifinals on Friday, March 19. Once that happens, expect MyBookie to post updated odds to win the individual matches as well as the UCL.
