Expert Soccer Picks: Champions League Matchday 6 Odds, Top Games & Analysis – 2024 Season

Heading into this week’s action in the Champions League, things seem to have split into two very different races.

The main battle is for the top 8 spots in the league, as that means an automatic berth into the quarterfinal.

Champions League Matchday 6 Odds Analysis

With the top teams playing so many games, avoiding extra matches is like gold dust. The other battle is for the playoff spots, which will be handed to the teams that finish in the 9th through 24th spots in the Champions League table.

It is certainly not the ideal path, but for teams who never expected to be in the top 8, it’s a lifeline that they will all willingly grab.

Being able to stay alive and rake in some more revenues is a great prize in its own right.

This Tuesday and Wednesday, we will see those battles continue to take shape, so let’s preview 3 games from each of those 2 days, with predictions for each.

Atalanta +162 vs Real Madrid +146 Draw +255

Champions League Prediction: Atalanta 1-1 Real Madrid

If, after 5 games played, you had suggested that Atalanta would be 19 spots ahead of the defending champions, football fans would probably have laughed you out of the room. That is exactly where we are, though, and I think it’s more than fair to suggest that all the pressure is on Madrid in this one. Atalanta is currently sitting in 5th, taking 11 points from their first 5 games.

They have also surged to the top of Serie A, so this is a team in great form. Real Madrid is currently sitting down in 24th in the CL table, which means that they are not even guaranteed a playoff spot at this point. They have lost 2 in a row in this competition and need a win to help keep their chances of defending their title alive.

Leverkusen +123 vs Inter +202 Draw +246

Where: BayArena, Leverkusen, Germany
Champions League Prediction: Leverkusen 0-1 Inter

With both of these teams currently sitting in the top 8, I think we can say that this is the best matchup on the Tuesday schedule. Leverkusen bounced back from a 4-0 thrashing at the hands of Liverpool with a 5-0 win over Salzburg in Matchday 5. That victory moved them into 6th place in the table and onto 10 points overall.

They have also been in good form in the Bundesliga, winning 3 in a row and going unbeaten in their last 5. Inter has proven to be impenetrable in Champions League play, winning 4 in a row and drawing the other, while failing to surrender a single goal in 5 games. They are not going to kill you with offense, scoring just 7, but they always seem to find a way to win.

Salzburg +660 vs PSG -310 Draw +440

Where: Red Bull Arena Salzburg, Wals bei Salzburg, Austria
Champions League Prediction: Salzburg 0-2 PSG

If you want to talk about pressure and not living up to expectations, Real Madrid is probably the first team that comes to mind in this tournament, but PSG would need to be a very close second in that conversation. This week, they will have a real shot at picking up all 3 points against a Salzburg team that has struggled to perform at this level.

They did manage 1 win, with that one coming against Feyenoord, but they have lost all 4 of their other games, getting outscored 14-0 in the process. PSG is once again running away with Ligue 1, but they have not been good in this competition. PSG opened with a 1-0 win over Girona, but they have managed just 1 more point in the 4 games since and are in dire need of a win to stay in the playoff conversation. I think they get it here.

Arsenal -350 vs Monaco +830 Draw +430

Champions League Prediction: Arsenal 3-1 Monaco

We are now jumping ahead to Wednesday for the next 3 games on this preview, and we start with what looks like an excellent matchup between a pair of teams in the hunt for a top 8 spot. Arsenal is coming off a disappointing draw this past weekend in the EPL, a result that did little to help their push for the title.

They have been much better in this competition, though, winning 5-1 over Sporting last time out to move to 7th overall. Monaco is clinging to the final top 8 spot in the Champions League after picking up 10 points though their opening 5 games. They are coming off their first loss in the competition, going down 3-2 to Benfica in Matchday 5. I think they could be in trouble again here.

Dortmund +202 vs Barcelona +111 Draw +280

When: Wednesday, December 11, 2:00 PM
Where: SIGNAL IDUNA PARK, Dortmund, Germany
Champions League Prediction: Dortmund 2-3 Barcelona

This is a matchup that is going to have a huge impact on the standings, as both of these teams are currently sitting in the top 4 in the CL table. Dortmund has been solid in this competition, winning 4 of their 5 games to this point, but their one loss is something that cannot be ignored, going down 5-2 to a Real Madrid team that has certainly not been at their best this season.

Home field will be a boost for Dortmund, but they are going to need to be at their very best to get past a Barcelona team that has won 4 in a row in this competition and who have been scoring goals for fun. With that in mind, I think the OVER is the way to go here.

Juventus +280 vs Manchester City -107 Draw +242

When: Wednesday, December 11, 2:00 PM
Where: Allianz Stadium, Torino, Italy
Champions League Prediction: Juventus 1-1 Manchester City

It is more than a little surprising to see both of these teams sitting down in the lower half of the table after 5 games, but their form in both domestic and European competition should show that it’s perhaps not as shocking as we might think.

Juventus is on a run of 4 games without a win in Serie A, although they did draw all those games. That has carried over into the CL, with each of their last 2 games ending in a tie. It has been much the same story for Manchester City, who have stumbled rather dramatically since losing Rodri to injury. Both teams are in dire need of a win here, but I think they might need to settle for a share of the spoils.
