CONCACAF Champions Cup Betting Preview: Leg 2 Matches Odds & Predictions

One thing that you can count on in football is that there will always be a tournament going on in some part of the world. We have a big one happening right now in the CONCACAF region, with 16 teams now remaining in the CONCACAF Champions Cup. It is the Liga M and MLS teams that garner most of the attention in this tournament, but there are other teams from the region still involved right now.

Over the next few days, we will have the first leg in the Round of 16 games coming our way. There are some very good matchups in here, so let’s see if we can break down all 8 matchups, with predictions for each.

The CONCACAF Champions Cup Betting Matchups in the Round of 16

It is worth noting that Mexican teams have dominated this tournament over the years, which will help explain why we have made some of the predictions we are about to make here, so let’s get to it:

Cincinnati +153 vs Tigres +177 Draw (+228)

One of the reasons why Mexican teams do so well in this competition is because they are in the heart of their season, while the MLS teams are just getting started. Cincinnati took out Motagua 5-2 over the 2 legs in the opening round, while Tigres made short work of Real Esteli.

Cincinnati, though, has to be a little concerned at their 4-1 loss to Philly this past weekend, and I think this matchup may be too much for them. I have Tigres moving on.

^

Pumas -236 vs Alajuelense +650 Draw (+350)

Pumas had to go through the First Round, where they won against Cavalry from the Canadian Premier League, while Alajuelense were given the bye into this round.

The Liga MX team are in a poor run of form at the moment, losing each of their last 4 games, while Alajuelense is unbeaten in their last 5. I still think Pumas finds a way to get through this one.

^

LAFC -109 vs Columbus +275 Draw (+270)

This will be the opening game of the tournament for Columbus, who were one of the pre-seeded teams placed into the Round of 16. LAFC had to play another MLS team in Round 1, taking out Colorado over the two games.

Both teams are unbeaten in league play in the MLS and look to be very evenly matched. I am leaning toward Columbus, but I expect this one to be tight.

Chivas +204 vs America +135 Draw (+226)

We have an all-Liga MX matchup coming here, with America in as the favorite considering that they have won 3 straight championships in Mexico and are out to another flying start.

Chivas eased past Cibao in the opening round, while America was among the pre-seeded teams getting a bye. America is unbeaten in their last 4 meetings with Chivas, so I expect them to move on in this one.

^

Herediano vs LA Galaxy

This is the second straight matchup against an MLS team in this tournament, as they got here by taking out Real Salt Lake in Round 1. The Galaxy, who finished last season as champions of the MLS, were pre-seeded and given the bye.

They have opened the season with back-to-back losses, but this might be a good opportunity for them to get back to winning ways.

^

Seattle Sounders +137 vs Cruz Azul +191 Draw (+238)

For me, this might well be the best matchup in the Round of 16. Seattle had a comfortable passage through the opening round, taking out Antigua 6-2 over the 2 legs. It was similarly easy time for Cruz Azul, as they thumped Real Hope in their matchup in Round 1.

It is a little unfortunate that one of these teams is going to bow out at this stage of the tournament, but I am leaning toward the Sounders to get the job done.

^

Vancouver Whitecaps +151 vs Monterrey +171 Draw (+242)

Neither of these teams were given a bye in the opening round, with both getting through their Round 1 matchups. Vancouver had to come from behind to defeat Deportivo Saprissa, winning 3-2 over the two legs, while Monterrey made short work of Forge FC, winning 5-0 over the two games.

This is a tough one to handicap, but I am leaning toward Monterrey getting the win over the two legs, although I would not be totally surprised to see it go the other way.

^

Inter Miami vs Cavalier

I’m sure that a lot of football fans are waiting for this one, as it is another opportunity to see Lionel Messi playing in a major tournament. Miami made short work of Sporting KC in the opening round, and while Cavalier got a bye in Round 1, this looks like a much easier matchup for the Miami team.

I think they could well do enough in the opening leg of this matchup to essentially wrap things up and move on.

Which Team Will Win the CONCACAF Champions Cup?

There are a couple of matchups in the Round of 16 that are essentially a coin flip, but I think there are a few teams that look like a shoo-in to progress to the quarterfinal. It is those obvious teams that are likely to be among the favorites to win it all. The teams that really jump out in this tournament are:

  • Club America
  • Inter Miami
  • Columbus Crew
  • Cruz Azul

If you take a look at the bracket, you will see that Inter Miami and Club America are on a collision course in the final. If asked, I would suggest that this would be the Final that most fans would want to see, and I have to say that I would not be surprised to see it happen. Overall, though, America looks like the team to beat.

2024 CONCACAF Champions League Leg 2

On Tuesday in the CONCACAF Champions Cup, there are four matches, three of which feature teams with similar scores. However, Robinhood and Herediano stand out, with the latter leading 2-0 after dominating the first match with 17 shots on goal.

The other teams, however, all have little that separate them. Here’s a look at the CONCACAF Champions Cup betting analysis and a few of those matchups and what to expect.

Columbus Looks the Part

Tuesday, March 12 at 6:00 pm ET
Lower.com Field, Columbus, Ohio, USA

The Crew look like they are again going to be an excellent team in MLS play. The defending MLS Cup champions have been dominant defensively to start the year, including a 1-0 win over the Houston Dynamo in the first leg of the CONCACAF competition.

Columbus has limited two of its first three league opponents to an xG of .8 or less. The Crew, meanwhile, has been able to pass with precision and have, for the most part, been able to control matches with good possession. Houston has yet to pick up a win this season.

The Dynamo are a possession heavy team, but haven’t been able to finish their opportunities in the final third. Houston will need to finish better if it wants to upset Columbus. The Crew are -145 on the three-way money to win this match, while the Dynamo is +360 to win in regulation and the match is +275 to end in a draw.

Columbus will do enough to move onto the quarterfinals.

Orlando is in Tough Spot

Tuesday, March 12 at 10:30 pm ET
Estadio Universitario, San Nicolás de los Garza, Mexico

Orlando City sought a victory against Tigres UANL in Florida to begin the Round of 16 but failed. Now, they travel to Mexico, facing an even aggregate score of zero. Tigres is favored at -185; Orlando is +450 to win.

The Lions are hoping scoring two goals in their last match will jumpstart their offense. Orlando City had been shut out twice before that. The Lions have also conceded three or more goals in their previous two MLS matches. Tigres has struggled lately, but Orlando won’t be the team to break through on the road and stop them.

Philadelphia Ready to Go on the Road

Tuesday, March 12 at 8:15 pm ET
Estadio Hidalgo, Pachuca, Mexico

The Union remains in a frustrating cycle, settling for draws in four consecutive matches. In the first leg against Pachuca, Philadelphia managed three shots on target, while Liga MX took 18 shots, hitting three on target.

Pachuca is -145 on the three-way moneyline to win the match. The Union are +360 to win in regulation, while the match is +290 to end in a draw. Philadelphia did control 52 percent of the possession in the match, but will need to score to move on.

CONCACAF Champions League Betting Preview of the Leg 2 Matches

The CONCACAF Champions League will feature three matches involving MLS teams on Wednesday night, two of which will be held in the United States. All three MLS clubs that are active on this match day are either tied with their opponent after the first leg, or are holding leads going into leg number two. But no lead is safe in soccer, and all three MLS clubs need to play their best on Wednesday to secure a trip to the quarterfinals.

Will the chalk get it done on March 15? Keep reading for info, analysis, and free picks for Wednesday’s CONCACAF Champions League betting of the leg 2 games.

Real Espana vs. Vancouver Whitecaps

Odds: Real Espana +420, Vancouver -133, Draw +290 | O/U 2.5
When: Wednesday, March 15, 2023 at 12:15 pm ET
Where: Estadio Francisco Morazán, San Pedro Sula, Honduras
TV / Streaming: ESPN

In the first of these three CONCACAF Champions League matches, Vancouver Whitecaps will travel to Honduras to take on Real Espana. The Whitecaps hold a 5-0 lead on aggregate heading into this match, and it would take an absolute catastrophe on their part for Real Espana to get back into contention in this tie. But Espana will be going all out to attack in this game, which could open up an interesting betting opportunity.

Rather than betting on a side to win this match, the better wager may be the over, thanks to Espana’s need for goals. They should press for goals from the start, just to make this a competitive tie once again. That will open up opportunities on the counter attack for the Whitecaps, who showed no problems scoring goals even under more neutral attacking circumstances in leg one.

Starting Lineups

Real Espana Predicted Lineup:
Lopez (GK), Flores, Escobar, D. Garcia, J. Garcia, Cruz, Chavez, Benavidez, Vuelto, Rocca & Vieyra
Vancouver Predicted Lineup:
Takaoka (GK), Laborda, Veselinovic, Blackmon, Raposo, Vite, Cubas, Gressel, Dajome, Gauld & Cordova

Orlando City vs. UNAL Tigres

Odds: Orlando City -105, UNAL Tigres +320, Draw +230 | O/U 1.5
When: Wednesday, March 15, 2023 at 12:15 pm ET
Where: Exploria Stadium, Orlando, FL, USA
TV / Streaming: ESPN

A matchup between MLS and Liga MX will wrap up on Wednesday, as Orlando City hosts UNAL Tigres after a draw in their first leg. Both teams failed to score in the first leg, setting up a winner take all second leg in Orlando here. But that might not bode well for the MLS side, given how thoroughly teams from Liga MX have dominated this competition historically.

Since the start of the CONCACAF Champions League, Mexican teams have won all but one of these competitions. Therefore, Orlando City must be at its best to get through this tie. Tigres dominated the first match, with 21 shots to Orlando’s 8.

Starting Lineups

Orlando City Predicted Lineup:
McCarthy (GK), Palencia, Murillo, Long, Palacios, Tillman, Ilie, Acosta, Opoku, Bouanga & Biuk
UNAL Predicted Lineup:
Moreira (GK), Martinez, Gonzalez, Gamboa, Cordero, Mora, Borges, Suarez, Lopez, Alcocer & Venegas

Los Angeles FC vs. Alajuelense

Odds: Los Angeles -250, Alajuelense +725, Draw +425 | O/U 3.5
When: Wednesday, March 15, 2023 at 10:30 pm ET
Where: Banc of California Stadium, Los Angeles, CA, USA
TV / Streaming: ESPN

Los Angeles FC will face off against Costa Rica’s Alajuelense in the second leg of their CONCACAF Champions League matchup. After a strong first leg, LAFC is prioritizing the competition, but must remain vigilant to secure their advancement to the next round.

Carlos Vela participated in the first leg against Alajuelense. With a three-goal lead, LAFC may opt to rest him ahead of upcoming MLS matches. If he sits out, betting on Alajuelense to win could be a wise choice, despite their slim chances of advancing.

Starting Lineups

Los Angeles Predicted Lineup:
McCarthy (GK), Palencia, Murillo, Long, Palacios, Tillman, Ilie, Acosta, Opoku, Bouanga & Biuk
Alajuelense Predicted Lineup:
Moreira (GK), Martinez, Gonzalez, Gamboa, Cordero, Mora, Borges, Suarez, Lopez, Alcocer & Venegas
