As we prepare to start the knockout phase of the Copa America, I think it’s fair to say that these are not necessarily the matchups that we were expecting.
Most notably, the United States became the first host nation not to make it out of the group stage at the Copa America, thanks in large part to a stunning 2-1 defeat at the hands of Panama.
My Analysis
That result did not have an impact on these two teams making it to the quarterfinals, although the struggles of Mexico left the door open for Venezuela to cruise through their group and finish first.
Their reward is a tough game against Canada, who moved into this phase of the tournament after finishing 2nd in their group, which was basically the expectation given that they were on there with Argentina.
MyBookie Sportsbook have this one as close, with Venezuela ins as a slight favorite at odds of +159. The goal total for this one is set at 2 ½.

The expectation was that Venezuela would definitely have a shot at getting out of the group stage, and they certainly helped their cause by opening their tournament with a 2-1 win over Ecuador.
In Game 2, they would probably have been delighted with a draw against Mexico, but they weather the storm, played some great defense, and left with an unexpected 1-0 win.
They had already punched their ticket into the next round with that win, so the pressure was off in their final game.
Venezuela put on a bit of a show in that one, defeating Jamaica 3-0 in a game that was as one-sided as the score suggests.
This is a team that is very much riding on a high right now, but this might be their toughest matchup to date in the Copa America.

You can’t ask for a much tougher start than opening the tournament against the World Champions, but that is exactly what Canada had to do.
The Canadians squandered a couple of amazing chances in that one and eventually paid the price, losing 2-0 to Argentina.
They went into Game 2 under some real pressure, knowing that a loss would probably mean the end of the road at this tournament.
Canada dug deep and score the lone goal to come away with a 1-0 win over Peru.
There was some definite nail-biting going on in their final game against Chile, but the Canada defense held strong in a 0-0 tie, giving them 4 points and 2nd place in the group.
^Venezuela vs Canada Betting Prediction
Both of these teams have been solid in the defensive end of the field, so it would not be a surprise to see this game decided by a single goal.
Since Canada has struggled in the offensive department, I am leaning toward Venezuela for the win.
