In the European domestic leagues, there tend to be 3 different battles taking place over the course of the season.
There is the race to win the league that is obviously the most important, but then you also have teams playing for the European competition spots, with the Champions League places being the ones that every team wants to get into.
La Liga Betting Odds Matchday 20 Analysis
The money that comes with taking part in that competition is totally huge. After that, you then have the fight going on at the other end of the table, with the teams down there looking to avoid the drop to a lower division. Again, money is a major motivator, as relegation means losing a ton of money through TV deals.
Noe that we know how things tend to go in the race for the LaLiga title, let’s take a look at how things are going this season. We are 19 games into the season, which means that we are exactly halfway through the current campaign. Once we get through this portion, we will then take a look at the upcoming games, with predictions for each.
Title Race and European Places
The battle for the title has been a great one this season, with several teams taking turns at the top of the table. Over the years, we have become accustomed to Real Madrid and Barcelona taking turns winning it all, but we do occasionally see a team break up that dominance, albeit for very short time periods. Right now, it is Atlético Madrid who have moved to the top, going on a spectacular winning run that has then 1 point clear of Real Madrid in 2nd. They have Barcelona hot on their heels, although they are now 6 points out of the top spot.
The general feeling is that the title race will come down to those three teams, but Athletic Club might still have something to say about that. They are currently sitting in the final Champions League spot, just 2 points back of Barcelona. The team that finishes in 5th goes to the Europa League, and it is Villareal who are sitting in that spot now, while Mallorca in 6th are looking at a spot in the UEFA Conference League. Real Sociedad and Girona are close to the 5th and 6th place spots, so we are going to have a tight race for those places.
^Relegation
In LaLiga, it is the bottom 3 teams who make the drop. Right now, Valencia is sitting at the bottom of the table, sitting on 13 points from 19 games. Real Valladolid is 2 points ahead of Valencia on 15 points, while Espanyol has 16 points. There is, though, reason to believe that these 3 teams can battle their way to safety, as you have Getafe, Leganés, and Deportivo Alaves all sitting within 3 points of the team in 18th. This is a fight that is going to go all the way to the final week of the season.
^LaLiga Matchday 20 Predictions
The next round of games comes our way this weekend, starting on Friday. Let’s pick out some of the biggest matchups from Matchday 20, with predictions for each.
Espanyol -120 vs Real Valladolid +350 (Draw +222)
La Liga Prediction: Espanyol 1-0 Real Valladolid
La Liga Spread: Espayol -0.5 (O/U 2.5)
When: Friday, January 17, 4:00 PM
The first game of the weekend comes on Friday, and it is one that is going to have an impact on the relegation battle, as both teams are currently sitting in the drop zone. Espanyol could potentially pull away from the bottom 3 with a win, but this is a team that has not won in their last 5 games, although they have picked up 3 draws during that stretch.
They have been solid in defense, but their lack of goals is proving to be a problem. Real Valladolid are right behind their opponents, sitting 2nd bottom of the table right now, but they are showing some signs of life with 2 wins in their last 3 games. I think 1 goal might well be enough to win this game.

Leganés +580 vs Atlético Madrid -222 (Draw +310)
La Liga Prediction: Leganés 0-3 Atlético Madrid
La Liga Spread: Atletico -1.5 (O/U 2.5)
When: Saturday, January 18, 11:15 AM
You really cannot play any better than Atlético Madrid is playing right now, as they have won each of their last 14 games across all competitions. With that in mind, you would expect them to continue rolling against a team at the wrong end of the table, but these are very often the types of games that serve as a banana peel.
Over the last 5 games in the league, Madrid has scored 13 and surrendered just 4, winning them all. Leganés is sitting in 16th , just 3 points clear of the drop zone, so they are in desperate need of points that they are more than a little unlikely to get here. Madrid has lost just once in their last 11 meetings with Leganés, so another win looks likely.
^Getafe +550 vs Barcelona -228 (Draw +330)
La Liga Prediction: Getafe 0-1 Barcelona
La Liga Spread: Barcelona -1.5 (O/U 2.5)
When: Saturday, January 18, 4:00 PM
In the early part of the season, it looked as though Barcelona was going to be the team to beat, but they have started to head in the wrong direction in recent weeks. In fact, they have now lost 2 in a row and have picked up just 4 points out of a possible 15 in their last 5 games.
That run means that Barcelona is now 6 points out of the lead, so they need a win here to avoid getting to the point where getting back to the top might be impossible. Getafe is sitting too close to the relegation zone for comfort, but they are coming off a win last time out and are 2-2 in their last 4 games.
^Real Madrid -649 vs Las Palmas +1175 (Draw +640)
La Liga Prediction: Real Madrid 2-1 Las Palmas
La Liga Spread: Real Madrid -2.5 (O/U 3.5)
When: Sunday, January 19, 11:15 AM
While Madrid is on a very decent run of form, going 3-0-1 in their last 4 games, they have not been able to keep pace with Atlético, who are on fire right now. That means that Real Madrid has to settle for 2nd place in the table at the moment, but they are just 1 point off the pace.
There seems to be no sign of Atlético slipping up, so it is imperative that Real Madrid continues to win. Las Palmas are too close to the relegation zone for comfort, but they have been good of late and have 3 wins in their last 5 games. They have been a tough out in recent matchups with Madrid, so expect more of the same here.
