2021-2022 French Ligue 1 Recap
Lionel Messi’s first season at PSG led to a lopsided Ligue 1 victory. Paris dominated their league opponents, taking the title 86 points to 71 points over second place Marseille.
Monaco finished third and Rennes finished fourth. Nice came in fifth. Strasbourg finished sixth. Two teams that often contend finished eighth and tenth.
Lyon finished eighth while Lille finished tenth. Lens, this year’s favorite without PSG, finished seventh.
Top Pick: Stade Rennes +300
Lens is playing so well that they’ve built a 5 points lead over Rennes. No doubt, the top pick is going to have to work hard to catch Lens.
Rennes, though, had a much better finish last season than Lens. Not only that, but Rennes boasts the better roster with Portugal midfielder Xeka leading the charge.
If young Matthis Abline continues to improve, Rennes can for sure make up the difference. The 19 year old is one of France’s rising stars.
Second Pick: Marseille +330
Marseille won their final three matches before the break. The victories show that last year’s second-place squad is ready to make a move up the Ligue 1 ladder.
The second pick has some talent. Chilean Alexis Sanchez remains their top player. As long as Sanchez plays well, and he will, Marseille will have a shot to at least overtake Lens.
Third Pick: AS Monaco +800
Monaco must make up 9 points on Lens. It’s not an impossibility. But it won’t be easy. The key will be for Monaco to finish strong, which means instead of losing close matches, they win close matches.
In their last contest before the break, Monaco fell to Marseille 3-2. The problem is that Monaco would have grabbed a draw if they hadn’t conceded a goal in the 98th minute. Monaco lost in essentially the final play of the match.
Turn the loss to Marseille into a draw and Monaco is 8 points behind Lens, not 9.
Top Underdog Pick: Olympique Lyon +2500
Lyon is 15 points behind Lens. If there is any team that can make up that much ground in Ligue 1, it should be Lyonnaise.
One of the things that should make any soccer handicapper bullish on Lyon is that a U.S.-based investment firm bought the franchise. The Americans don’t buy soccer franchises, any sports franchise, really, unless they wish to compete.
The problem is we may not see any real positive movement until next season. Still, without PSG, Lyon has as much of a shot as any other underdog to win Ligue 1. So if you like the Americans love to win thesis, consider putting a few bucks behind our top underdog play.
