When it comes to two-leg match-ups, such as we see in the knock-out stages of the Champions League, it is very often the first leg that proves to be crucial. Given the option, you would probably get an even split when asking teams whether they would want to play the opening leg at home or on the road. With a home game, you can build up a good lead, but you also run the risk of giving up an away goal or two that makes the road trip all the more difficult.

That is where Manchester United find themselves now after going down 2-0 in the first leg of the Round of 16 versus PSG at Old Trafford. Giving up 1 away goal is always problematic but giving up 2 to a team as good as PSG is usually a sign that your time in the competition is about to come to an end. Yes, a dramatic turnaround is always possible, but when you look at the injury and suspension concerns that United have ahead of this one, the idea of a reversal of fortunes seems quite ridiculous. PSG is favored by a goal, with the O/U set at 3.

PSG vs Manchester United Betting Lines & Expert Prediction

Why bet on PSG?

Professional footballers never believe that the job is done until the final whistle blows, which is exactly the attitude that the PSG players will need to adopt on Wednesday night in Paris. A 2-0 win on the road in the opening leg puts them in a position of power, but if, for example, they were to go a goal down early at home, it might just give United the confidence they need to go on and make this tie a whole lot more uncomfortable than it needs to be.

PSG should be safe here, though, as they looked a good deal better than United in that opening leg and could just as easily have scored 3 or 4 before that one was all said and done. PSG did give up goals in each of their last 2 home games in the UCL, so take nothing for granted here.

Expected Line-up

  • 1-G. Buffon
  • 13-Dani Alves
  • 2-Thiago Silva
  • 5-Marquinhos
  • 14-Juan Bernat
  • 3-P. Kimpembe
  • 4-T. Kehrer
  • 11-Á. Di María
  • 6-M. Verratti
  • 23-J. Draxler
  • 7-K. Mbappé

Why bet on Manchester United?

Not only did Manchester United lose the opening leg of this Round of 16 series, but they also lost Paul Pogba for the second leg after the mercurial Frenchman was shown the red card. Given the injury concerns that United have, losing Pogba is an even bigger nightmare than it would have been had the manager had a full squad to choose from.

PSG vs Manchester United should be an easy one for the home side.

United have been fantastic under caretaker manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, going undefeated in the 12 Premier League games that he has taken charge of. His sole loss came in the opening leg to PSG, highlighting just how much work needs to still be done to get United back to the top of the heap in Europe.

Expected Line-up

  • 1-D. de Gea
  • 18-A. Young
  • 2-V. Lindelöf
  • 23-L. Shaw
  • 3-E. Bailly
  • 31-N. Matić
  • 21-A. Herrera
  • 8-J. Mata
  • 14-J. Lingard
  • 11-A. Martial
  • 10-M. Rashford

Expert Pick & Final Score Prediction for PSG vs Manchester United

I expect United to come out in the first 15 or 20 minutes of this one and have a go, but I think PSG will weather that storm and eventually take control, getting the win that comfortably moves them on to the next round.
