The 2023 MLS season is upon us, with interest in the United States’ top domestic league set to be higher than usual after an exciting World Cup campaign for the Americans. While some of the players from Team USA are set to take part in this MLS campaign, there are plenty of players beyond that group worth enjoying in MLS. Here, we look at the favorites and other teams worth betting to win the 2023 MLS Cup title.
MLS Season Favorites, Smart Picks and Dark Horses | MLS Lines
MLS Season Favorites
The number one favorite to win this year’s MLS Cup is LAFC, who won the championship last season as well. They will once again be led by Carlos Vela, who is one of the most prolific goal-scorers in the league, and will be expected to pour in the goals for the defending champions. Most importantly, Vela is healthy going into this season, after missing quite a bit of time a season ago.
Up there with LAFC on the list of favorites is the runner-up from last season in the Philadelphia Union. The Union nearly won a thrilling MLS Cup Final last season, only to fall short in a penalty shootout. They will be looking for revenge on LAFC and the rest of the league when they take the field as one of the favorites in 2023.
Smart Value Plays
A little further down the list of odds for the MLS Cup are a couple of interesting value plays, including the Seattle Sounders. Seattle is not as talented as they have been in recent years, when they were regularly competing for MLS Cups. But they do have one of the best home crowds in the entire league, and they will use that to their advantage to be in the mix once again in 2023.
Inter Miami is also an interesting team to win MLS Cup this year, as they are closer to the middle of the pack in terms of their odds to win the league. They will be led up front by Josef Martinez, who comes over from Atlanta United, who he led to an MLS Cup in the past. He should not miss a beat as he transfers over to Inter Miami, who will be dangerous from the start this season.
Longshot Dark Horses
When it comes to longshots, Toronto FC is a team worth keeping an eye on this season, thanks to their new-look strike force. Lorenzo Insigne is set to take part in his first full season as a member of TFC. He will give the team a much-needed boost up front to make them a more viable contender as a longshot than they were a season ago.
Also interesting from a longshot perspective will be the Portland Timbers. They are just a couple of seasons removed from a trip to the MLS Cup Final themselves, and have the potential to get back there if some things go their way. Another team with an elite home-field advantage, the Timbers, are never to be counted out completely, even if their roster is not as strong as it was a couple of years ago.
