The USL Championship is the second flight in American soccer, resting just behind Major League Soccer in the hierarchy, but don’t let its on-paper subordination detract from the fact that it produces some of the most interesting storylines in the sport.
The USL has two intriguing matches in the late-week portion of its schedule, one between New York Red Bulls II and San Diego Loyal SC, and the other featuring Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC and Las Vegas Lights FC.
Here is a look at how those matches figure to shape up so you can get all set to make your bets against the USL Championship odds.
USL Championship Betting Previews for June 2nd and 3rd
New York Red Bulls II vs San Diego Loyal SC
The New York Red Bulls’ USL affiliate has not enjoyed life in the USL this season, only securing four points from a possible 36 on the back of a 1-1-10 record. They have lost five matches in a row, with only a 1-1 draw against the Tampa Bay Rowdies breaking the monotony.
A major reason for their struggles is their toothless attack, which has produced just seven goals in the season thus far; their defense, meanwhile, has conceded 22 times, giving them one of the worst goal differentials in the entire league and highlighting why they sit dead-last in the USL’s Group East.
Their opponent in San Diego, meanwhile, has enjoyed a much more fruitful campaign, earning the third spot in Group West behind a 6-3-3 record; however, they have come on hard times as of late, managing just one win in their last seven outings. That win was a 3-2 result against the Rowdies, who seem to be the generous point-givers for both clubs.
The Loyal also allows a high number of goals (21) but have a potent attack, one that has scored the most goals in Group West (25) and the second-most in the entire league. Kyle Vassell’s eight goals in 12 matches not only give him an excellent return but make him the club’s highest goal-scorer in his first season with the team.
Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC vs Las Vegas Lights FC
Colorado Springs is second in Group West with a record of 8-0-2, making them one of the most consistent outfit in the entire league. If there is anything to point towards for Vegas fans, however, it is that the Switchbacks lost their last game 4-2 against the last-place team in their group.
Three players on the team are level for the team-high with four goals, while the collective has put 21 past opposing keepers; their defense is also much better than both of the teams previously mentioned as they have only allowed 12 goals this season.
Las Vegas, on the other hand, is about as average as it gets, sitting eighth in the West with a 4-4-5 record. They are winless in their last six matches and need to get three points to stabilize their fleeting form.
Daniel Trejo leads his team with six goals scored, giving him 40% of the team’s total of 15. They have let in 17 goals, however, putting them in the red for goal different
