UEFA drops Spartak Moscow from the Europa League
The final Europa League 16 became a final Europa League 15 on Feb. 28 when UEFA dropped all Russian soccer teams from international competitions.
Earlier on Feb. 28, FIFA had declared that Russia, due to the conflict in Ukraine, could not participate in this November’s World Cup. After the move, UEFA dropped the lone remaining Russian squad in the Europa League Round of 16, Spartak Moscow, from participating.
Since Spartak Moscow is banned from playing in the Europa League for the remainder of the season, Turkish League power Galatasaray becomes the longest shot on the board.
RB Leipzig through to the quarterfinals, has a huge edge over Barca, Sevilla, and Atalanta
The team that most benefits from Spartak Moscow’s absence is RB Leipzig. The German Bundesliga squad is an automatic quarterfinals participant.
Don’t look past the fact that Leipzig mustn’t play their way into the quarters. The German team has played great soccer since the start of 2022. The fact they can cut down on travel time to Russia and instead play Bundesliga matches until the Europa Leagues Elite Eight gives them an edge over the other favorites.
Barcelona playing like a Europa League Champion
Many feel Barcelona will win the Europa League. Barca beat Napoli 4-2 in their last Europa League match.
Barcelona followed up the victory against Napoli with a 4-0 beat down of Athletic Bilbao. Dembele, Depay, Luuk de Jong, and Aubameyang all scored.
Barca is suddenly deep. Dembele entered the match for Ferran Torres and de Jong entered for Aubameyang.
The best European soccer franchises never stay down for long. Less than 7 months after parting ways with Lionel Messi, Barcelona is the favorite to win the Europa League and tied with Atletico Madrid with 45 points on the La Liga Primer Division Standings.
Top underdogs Porto and West Ham United will be tough outs
Although Barcelona, Sevilla, Leipzig, and Atalanta are worthy favorites, soccer handicappers looking for a couple of underdogs to win the Europa League title should turn to Porto or West Ham United.
FC Porto, one of the Protueguese Liga’s best clubs, made it all the way to last season’s Champions League Semifinals. Porto is a quality squad. They can upset the favorites and win the Europa League.
West Ham also has the talent to win the title. West Ham is 2 points behind Man United and 5 points behind Chelsea on the Premier League Standings. If things break their way, West Ham could make a run to the Europa League title.
If you want to back chalk, Barcelona or Leipzig look best. But if you’re looking to back a dog, consider putting money behind Porto or West Ham United.
