The U.S. Open Cup is into the Round of 32, where the final eight teams that haven’t played in the competition enter the field.

The four teams from the CONCACAF Champions League, LAFC, Philadelphia Union, Orlando City, and Austin FC, are joined by the next four best teams from the 2022 MLS season: New York Red Bulls, LA Galaxy, NYCFC, and FC Dallas in joining this round.

Those eight entered the pool with the 24 winners from the Third Round to form the Round of 32. The U.S. Open Cup broke the 32 teams down into eight groups of four, based on geography, to draw the 16 matchups. All 16 ties are single elimination, with overtime and penalty kicks if needed, and will be played on May 9 and May 10.

The Round of 32 features nine all-MLS matchups, six ties where an MLS team plays a USL Championship team, and one matchup where both teams are in the USL Championship. Let’s take a look at some of the U.S. Open Cup betting opportunities for this week’s action.

St. Louis City, an Intriguing Underdog

St. Louis City FC got off to an impressive 5-0 start in MLS play. The expansion team has come back to earth a little bit over the last month, but still, they are in second place in the stacked Western Conference.

St. Louis City leads all of MLS with a +10 goal differential, and they have scored 27 goals in 11 games, including their five-goal outburst against Union Omaha in the U.S. Open Cup Third Round. 

This week they head north for a first-ever meeting against Chicago Fire. The game won’t be played at Soldier Field but instead at the Fire’s former home in the suburbs. The Fire are languishing near the bottom of the Eastern Conference and have a -3 goal differential in MLS play. 

Surprisingly, City are +300 underdogs in this game, with the Fire at -133 and a draw at +290. This game should have goals, and City are primed to pull off an “upset” and move into the Round of 16 in their first-ever U.S. Open Cup. 

Can the Republic Do it Again?

Last year, USL Championships side Sacramento Republic were the darlings of the U.S. Open Cup. They beat three straight MLS teams, San Jose Earthquakes, LA Galaxy, and Sporting KC, to reach the final, where they lost at Orlando City. They are currently in first place of the USLC with a 5-0-3 record and only two goals allowed in eight games.

In the Round of 32, the Republic were drawn at home against MLS side Colorado Rapids. The Rapids are in 10th place in the Western Conference and have a -3 goal differential.

They are coming off a 3-1 win at LA Galaxy on Saturday, their first road win in a month. The Rapids won their first U.S. Open Cup game 3-1 at home against Northern Colorado Hailstorm. 

The Republic are slight home underdogs at +165. Colorado is +133, and a draw is +245. This Republic team knows how to win, and they aren’t scared of MLS teams, as evidenced by last year’s run to the finals. 

MLS Champs Looking to Advance

As far as favorites go, LAFC are on the road this week in the U.S Open Cup against Monterey Bay FC. LAFC are headed to the CONCACAF Champions League Final and coming off their first loss in MLS action this season, a 2-1 setback at San Jose.

They do have a lot of competitions going with the CCL, U.S. Open Cup, and MLS action, so a squad rotation may be in the cards for Tuesday night’s game. 

Monterey Bay are in sixth place in the Western Conference of the USLC. They are 3-2-4 on the season with a +3 goal differential. Founded in 2021 after moving from Fresno, Monterey Bay upset San Jose Earthquakes in the Third Round in April, their second-ever U.S. Open Cup Win.

LAFC likely won’t start the regulars but should still have enough firepower to take care of a USLC side. The defending MLS champions are -147 to win on Tuesday, while Monterey Bay is +320, and a draw is +290.

Union Omaha vs Northern Colorado Hailstorm FC

Neither of these USL1 clubs has gotten off to a good start this season. However, both upset an MLS team in the previous round, so both teams will be confident and excited to reach the last 16 of the Open Cup without having to face another MLS team.

New York City FC vs Rochester New York FC

Rochester won the U.S. Open Cup in 1999 and remains the only non-MLS team to pull off that feat. However, they are facing an uphill battle against NYCFC, which has had some uneven results this season but has scored the fourth-most goals in MLS thus far.

New England Revolution vs FC Cincinnati

A year ago, this would have been the best team in MLS facing one of the worst teams in the league. But New England has struggled thus far while Cincinnati has had some bright moments. Keep in mind this will be the Revolution’s first game of the competition, so we don’t know how committed they are to making a Cup run.

Nashville SC vs Atlanta United FC

Atlanta United is the defending champs of the U.S. Open Cup, so they should be motivated to maintain their crown despite being hit by the injury bug this season. Nashville, meanwhile, has been inconsistent and unconvincing early in the MLS campaign.

Minnesota United FC vs Colorado Rapids

Neither team has looked that great early in the MLS season, but the Cup gives them each a fresh slate. That’s particularly true for the Rapids, who got a pass to this stage of the competition.

Houston Dynamo FC vs San Antonio FC

San Antonio has looked great early in the USLC season. They also took down Austin FC in the last round, so SAFC won’t be intimidated by another MLS club, especially one that has just three victories in 10 games during the MLS season.

Seattle Sounders FC vs San Jose Earthquakes

The Sounders enter the Open Cup fresh off a CONCACAF Champions League title. But Seattle may not be in a cup run, especially since the Sounders have had a poor start to their league season.

Sacramento Republic FC vs Phoenix Rising FC

Both sides have had a good start to the USLC season and will be ecstatic to avoid an MLS club in this round. However, Sacramento has been far more convincing in the club’s previous Open Cup games this season.

California United Strikers FC vs LA Galaxy

The Strikers have proven to be one of the top teams in the NISA this season, so this could be a tricky game for the Galaxy, especially on the road. However, the Galaxy has elite talent if they want to use it and is also tied for the fewest goals conceded in MLS thus far, so good luck to the Strikers penetrating the Galaxy backline.

But before the loss, D.C. had beaten Flower City Union 3-0 and New England Revolution 3-2. On May 7, D.C. beat Houston 2-0. Beating the Red Bulls won’t be easy, though. NYRB has won 3-of-5 with a couple of draws. A draw in these seems probable.

Louisville City FC vs Detroit City FC 

When: Tuesday, May 10 at 7:30 pm ET

Louisville versus Detroit is a contest between two of the best teams in the USL Championship. Road team Louisville has won 4 with a draw in their last 5. 

Home squad Detroit lost their last via  a 3-1 score to FC Tulsa. But before the loss, Detroit City had won 4 straight. One of the victories was a fantastic 2-1 win over MLS power Columbus Crew on April 19. The home team gets the call.

South Georgia Tormenta FC vs Inter Miami CF

When: Tuesday, May 10 at 8:00 pm ET

USL League One teams like South Georgia always have a disadvantage over MLS teams like Inter Miami. Road squad Tormenta has an even bigger disadvantage in this game because they must travel to South Florida. 

But Miami hosts South Georgia after losing 2 straight. South Georgia is on fire with 3 wins and 2 draws in their last 5. The road team grabs the win.

FC Dallas vs Sporting Kansas City 

When: Tuesday, May 10 at 8:30 pm ET

Dallas has 3 wins and 2 draws in their last 5. Based on Dallas’ form, they should win this no problem.

But one of the road squad’s draws was a 2-2 match versus Sporting KC. In the head-to-head before the last, Sporting Kansas City blasted FC Dallas 3-1. KC is the play.

The Los Angeles Football Club is playing like MLS Champs. LAFC has won 4-of-5 with a draw. The only knock versus Los Angeles could be that they drew in their last versus Philadelphia Union.

Also, in the last head-to-head, LAFC drew agianst Portland. But this happens in L.A. where LAFC should dominate. The home team rolls.
