Carlos Alcaraz

Carlos Alcaraz, winner of the 2024 French Open and Wimbledon tournaments, was just 18 years old during the Tokyo 2020 Olympics and didn’t participate.

Three years later and he has been a world No. 1 and is a four-time grand slam champion, not to mention won each of the last two grand slams.

He is the unquestionable betting favorite and likely gold medal winner, especially since the tournament is being played at Roland Garros, where he just won about two months prior.

Alcaraz only turned 21 in May and is also already a 15-time winner on the ATP Tour.

He just beat Novak Djokovic in straight sets in the Wimbledon final and is playing at a higher level than ever before.

He is 33-6 overall this season and has a career record on clay courts of 138-35.

Jannik Sinner

Prior to the French Open and Wimbledon, it appeared as though Jannik Sinner would have been the Olympic gold medal betting favorite.

However, Alcaraz has been dominant at the last two grand slams and has two wins over Sinner this season.

The young Italian, meanwhile, hasn’t necessarily performed poorly – he still only has four losses this season and remains world No. 1 – and could certainly win in Paris, although it seems unlikely that anyone can beat Alcaraz on clay right now.

Sinner has had success recently on the international stage, however.

He was the key factor in Italy’s 2023 Davis Cup victory late last season and carried that momentum into winning his first grand slam at the 2024 Australian Open.

Novak Djokovic

There’s pretty much only one thing Djokovic hasn’t accomplished in tennis – winning an Olympic gold medal.

He won bronze in 2008 and looked poised to capture gold in 2020, but suffered a surprising defeat 6-1, 3-6, 1-6 to Zverev in the semi-finals.

He’s nearing the end of his career, even though he is coming off a second consecutive Wimbledon final, so this will almost certainly be his last chance to win Olympic gold.

Djokovic is 23-7 this season.

He has already equaled his loss total from each of the past three seasons despite playing significantly fewer matches.

He is 209-43 in his career on clay courts.

Iga Swiatek

As is the case with Alcaraz, it’s hard to see anybody beating Iga Swiatek at Roland Garros.

The world No. 1 had a tough showing at Wimbledon, losing in the third round, but grass isn’t her specialty.

She was dominant, however, in the 2024 French Open, beating Jasmine Paolini 6-2, 6-1 in the final and Mirra Andreeva 6-3, 6-1 in the semi-finals.

She lost just one set in the tournament and became only the third woman to win three straight titles at Roland Garros in the Open Era.

Swiatek was the sixth seed in Tokyo and lost in the second round of the hard courts tournament.

It should be a different story on clay, especially at a venue where she has had so much recent success.

Coco Gauff

Coco Gauff is certainly a capable competitor, having won the 2023 US Open, but will be in tough if she matches up against Swiatek, to whom she lost in straight sets at the 2024 French Open. Gauff withdrew prior to the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, so this will be her first Games.

She is 1-11 against Swiatek in 12 career matches, so her best hope at a gold medal is likely to avoid playing the world No. 1.

Gauff is 35-11 this season.

She won her seventh career title early this season in Auckland and has reached five semi-finals, including the Australian Open and French Open.

She’s a good pick to win the upcoming US Open in August/September, but not so much in Paris.

Elena Rybakina

Elena Rybakina reached the semi-finals at Wimbledon and is currently ranked No. 4 in the world.

She has a 40-8 record this season, including 12-2 on clay courts.

She made the quarter-finals at Roland Garros before losing to Paolini in straight sets.

She won three titles and was runner-up at two other events this season.

Men’s Olympic Tennis Preview – Djoković Looking For His First Olympic Gold Medal

Novak Djoković has this month passed Roger Federer in the longest time spent as the world no.1 and is currently the undisputed best tennis player in the world. The Serb has already won three Grand Slams on the season and is only one short of joining the elite club of players, who have won all three major tournaments in a single year.

Despite his success on the year, Djoković has not impressed at the Olympics yet. He finished third in 2008 in Beijing and suffered a round-one elimination in Rio in 2016. In London (2012), Djoković had made it to the semi-finals when he got eliminated by Andy Murray.

Despite his lack of success over the years, Djoković has stated that he is motivated to fight for gold in Japan since the Olympic medal is one of few things missing to round up his impressive career.

His chances to achieve just became that much greater after Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal both withdrew from the tournament. And while Djoković is by far the biggest betting favorite to win, Olympics events rarely end as planned, leaving many wondering whether Djokovović will finally end the long wait or will he fall flat as he had in the previous three iterations.

Women’s Olympic Tennis Preview – Osaka and Barty Favoured to Succeed

While the men’s side of the competition is dominated by one name, the women’s singles tennis tournaments present us with a far more competitive field. The home favorite Naomi Osaka and Ashleigh Barty both travel to Japan as heavy favorites, with several names not too far behind in the betting market.

The 2020 Tokyo Olympics will serve as a redemption tournament for Osaka, who withdrew from the previous two Major tournaments, citing personal reasons. Meanwhile, her main competitor, Barty, stormed to win Wimbledon and secured her tag as the one to beat in Tokyo.

Joining the two is a long list of elite players, which unfortunately won’t feature some big names. Serena Williams, the US’s best chance to win gold, will not be competing, and neither will Canada’s Bianca Andreescu, who withdrew, citing pandemic-related challenges.

With the two out of the race, their nation’s best chance to win women’s singles tennis gold are world no.15 Jennifer Brady and world no.73 Leylah Annie for the US and Canada, respectively.

Neither is expected to win in Tokyo, as reflected in the Tennis betting odds. However, there’s always room for upset wins and miracle runs – and if there is one competition known for featuring just that, it’s the Olympic Games.

Del Potro had been off the ATP Tour for long stretches in the past three years due to wrist injuries and had often relied on a one-handed slice backhand since his 2016 comeback. Against Djokovic, del Potro’s wrist appeared fully healed as he native drove the ball with power off both wings, finishing with 41 winners in the 7-6 (4), 7-6 (2) win. Unlike in most men’s tournaments on the ATP Tour, this isn’t best of five sets but best of three. Del Potro also ended Djokovic’s medal hopes in London four years ago, prevailing in the bronze medal match.

Djokovic became the first man for 47 years to hold all four Grand Slam titles by winning the French Open in June. He suffered a shocking third-round loss to American Sam Querrey at Wimbledon but won his 30th Masters title in Toronto last week.

Del Potro will face Portugal’s Joao Sousa in the second round on Monday. The 27-year- old, who has dropped to 141st in the world after two years of injury problems, did not face a single break point on his serve against the 12-time Grand Slam champion Djokovic. Del Potro is a -445 favorite on tennis odds against Sousa.

Murray, who won gold in London four years ago, opened by beating Serbian Viktor Troicki 6-3, 6-2. Murray got the ball rolling when he broke in the sixth game to take a 4-2 lead. Troicki had a chance in the next game to break back but missed an easy volley. Murray held for 5-2 and went on to take the set. In the second Murray created another break at 1-1 with a wonderful running cross court winner and didn’t look back. Murray was pleased to tuck the first win under his belt.

“I was a bit nervous at the start having not played for a few weeks,” Murray said, “and it was my first match on hard courts for a while and in tricky windy conditions. But I did pretty well. It was a good start.”

If Murray were to win his second Olympic gold medal, it would give him 18 wins in a row to confirm he is in the most consistent form in his career. He has lost just once in his past 24 matches – the final at Roland Garros to Djokovic – and in the Olympics, he has not lost a singles match since August 2008. Next up is the Argentinian Juan Mónaco, who beat Mirza Basic 6-2, 6-2 and has taken two matches off Murray in five attempts, his last win six years ago.

The other favorite with Djokovic out now is Spain’s Rafael Nadal, the 2008 gold medalist in Beijing. He dropped only three games in his return to the Olympics, winning 6-2, 6-1 against Argentine Federico Delbonis. The third seed won 63 percent of his service points. Nadal, who missed the 2012 Olympics due to injury, now faces Andreas Seppi on Tuesday and is a -525 betting favorite.

But Nadal isn’t healthy, either. The win over Delbonis was Nadal’ first match since the French Open.

“If there is not Olympic Games I will not be here competing,” said Nadal, “because the wrist needs a little bit more time to be 100 percent recovered. But is only one time every four years, the experience in an Olympic Games is something unforgettable. I missed the last one in London so I didn’t want to miss this one.”

Williams won the first three and Cornet the last three. Their most recent meeting was in 2014 at the Wuhan Open. Williams was leading 6-5 in the first set but withdrew from the match due to illness.

The second-favorite to win gold is Germany’s Angelique Kerber, who is No. 2 in the world. Kerber had reached the semifinals at the Canadian Masters where she was beaten by Simona Halep in three sets. She had lost the final at Wimbledon and had to retire from the WTA Bastad in the second round. Kerber opened this event winning the last five games to battle past Colombia’s Mariana Duque-Mariño, 6-3, 7-5. On Monday Kerber will meet a player that has troubled her in the past in Canada’s Bouchard. She beat American Sloane Stephens on Saturday to claim her maiden Olympic victory. Bouchard has won the past three meetings vs. Kerber.

Agnieszka Radwanska was the highest seed to fall in the first round. The No.4 seed fell to China’s Zheng Saisai in straight sets. Seeds went 12-4 in Round 1 in Rio.
