Big Three Battle on Clay! Examining Updated French Open Odds This Week

Big Three Battle on Clay! Examining Updated French Open Odds This Week

The French Open gets underway, and the spotlight shines brightly on the “Big Three” of men’s tennis – Carlos Alcaraz, Novak Djokovic, and Jannik Sinner. With the Roland Garros title on the line, all eyes are on these dominant forces.

While updated French Open odds this week heavily favor them, the tournament promises captivating storylines and the potential for an upset.

Before we delve into the contenders’ recent form, head-to-head matchups, and their historical performances at Roland Garros, let’s explore the updated French Open odds this week.

2024 Roland Garros

The French Open at Roland Garros, the second of four grand slam tennis events on the ATP calendar, is fast approaching. Qualifying for the 123rd edition of the clay court tournament is ongoing this week, and the official draw begins on Monday.

There are several intriguing storylines heading into the event. Novak Djokovic, the world No. 1, has struggled this season and needs to make the final to retain his top-ranked status on the ATP Tour, while world No. 2 Jannik Sinner, battling a right hip injury, is hoping to win back-to-back grand slams.

Rafael Nadal is also competing in what is likely his final French Open. Only three other players – Djokovic, Roger Federer, and Stan Wawrinka – have won at Roland Garros since Nadal won his first of 14 titles in 2005.

Top 3 Betting Favorites

Carlos Alcaraz

Like Sinner, Carlos Alcaraz is heading into the 2024 French Open with injury concerns. The talented Spaniard, a two-time grand slam winner, has been dealing with a forearm injury this season and recently withdrew from the Italian Open. He has reportedly been working hard with coach Juan Carlos Ferrero to get in shape for the French Open, but bettors should be cautious about his conditioning and health status.

Alcaraz is considered one of the best clay court players on the ATP Tour, but interestingly has yet to reach the final at Roland Garros. He was a semi-finalist in last year’s tournament. He’s 18-5 this season with one tournament victory, winning the ATP Masters 1000 event at Indian Wells. He won six times last season.

Novak Djokovic

The defending champion and three-time winner at Roland Garros, Djokovic surprisingly comes into this year’s event without the shortest odds to win the tournament. His status as the most dominant player on the planet has been slipping since the emergence of Alcaraz and Sinner, both of whom are in their early 20s and have beaten him in grand slams. He has plenty to prove, but his confidence is shattered right now.

In a rare move, Djokovic opted to compete in the Geneva Open this week, an ATP 250 event. It’s his first time ever competing in the tournament. He chose to do so after another disappointing Round of 32 loss at the Italian Open last week. Djokovic also lost in the Round of 32 to lucky loser Luca Nardi in the BNP Paribas Open earlier this season.

Jannik Sinner

Sinner, whose best finish at Roland Garros is a quarter-final result in 2020, has easily been the best player in the sport in 2024. He has three titles, including his first grand slam at the Australian Open, and is a remarkable 28-2 in 30 matches. He also led Italy to win the Davis Cup late last season.

However, Sinner is also dealing with a hip injury that is certainly cause for concern. It kept him out of his home tournament, the Italian Open in Rome. As dominant as he has been this season, he might be worth fading in the French Open.

French Open Odds & Betting Favorites 2023: Carlos Alcaraz Top Pick, Auger-Aliassime Longshot

The 2023 French Open is still months away, but that doesn’t mean it’s not worth looking into. Most sportsbooks have betting open year-round for the four Grand Slams, and the French Open at Roland Garros is an event like no other. It’s the only clay-court Grand Slam and has been dominated by one man for the better part of the 21st century: Rafael Nadal.

A 14-time champion, Nadal defeated Norwegian Casper Ruud in last year’s finals. The veteran Spaniard has been so dominant at Roland Garros that only four other players – Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer, and Stan Wawrinka – have won the French Open since 2005.

However, as the calendar turns to 2023, Nadal is surprisingly not the betting favorite to win this year’s French Open. Let’s have a look at our top 3 players to win the Roland Garros and a sleeper pick so you can bet on the French Open Odds.

Early 2023 French Open Betting Predictions and Odd Favorites | Tennis Lines

The Top 3 Favorites to Win the 2023 Roland Garros

Carlos Alcaraz (+175)

Carlos Alcaraz, the 2022 US Open and current world No. 1, has a share of the shortest odds to win the 2023 French Open. Expected to take the reigns from Nadal as the next great Spanish tennis player, Alcaraz had a breakthrough season in 2022 and became the youngest player to finish the year as the top-ranked player in the ATP Rankings. He’s still just 19.

For reference, Alcaraz was the sixth seed in the 2022 French Open and reached the quarter-finals before losing a four-set match to German Alexander Zverev. He did, however, miss the ATP Finals and Davis Cup finals due to injury but is apparently 100 percent ahead of the Australian Open.

Novak Djokovic (+175)

Djokovic is only a two-time French Open champion (he has 21 Grand Slam victories), but that’s largely due to the dominance of Nadal. He won the event in 2021 with Nadal absent from the draw and in 2016, when Nadal was forced to withdraw in the third round due to a wrist injury. Judging by the past, if Nadal is healthy, there’s little to no chance Djokovic wins at Roland Garros.

Yet, there’s added motivation this year for the Serbian star. He’s chasing his record-tying 22nd Grand Slam at the Australian Open, which could set up a scenario in which he and Nadal are looking to win their 23rd Grand Slam at Roland Garros.

Rafael Nadal (+250)

What else is there to say about Nadal at Roland Garros? Nobody has dominated any tournament quite like he has at the French Open. It’s also been about four or five tournaments in a row now in which he’s silenced critics who believe he’s due to experience a drop in play. Nadal at +250 is perhaps the best-value bet for the 2023 French Open.

Sleeper Pick: Felix Auger-Aliassime +4000

You might be surprised to learn that clay is one of Felix Auger-Aliassime’s best surfaces. The Canadian has won 65.88 percent of his matches on clay (112-58) since 2015 and has gone toe-to-toe with Nadal at Roland Garros. In fact, he was the only player to take Nadal to five sets at last year’s French Open and just the third player to ever accomplish that feat.
