Betting Wimbledon So Far

The first round of Wimbledon at the All England Club is underway and this year is shaping up to be an exciting tournament with plenty of intriguing storylines.

Novak Djokovic, a seven-time winner at Wimbledon, is looking to win his 25th career grand slam despite coming off surgery to repair a torn meniscus in his right knee less than one month ago. Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz, who won the first two grand slams this season, are vying for supremacy in what should be a rivalry that spans many years.

There are a few other worthy contenders as well.

Wimbledon Favorites

Carlos Alcaraz

Alcaraz is the world No. 3, but has the shortest odds to win Wimbledon as the defending champion.

He beat Djokovic in an epic five-set thriller in last year’s final, ultimately cementing his status as the future of the sport.

That is until Sinner emerged as a top player capable of winning on any surface.

Alcaraz is 27-6 this season and is one of only two players to beat Sinner, the current world No. 1. Despite being considered a better clay or hard courts player, he is 18-3 in his career on grass, including 2-1 this season.

The 21-year-old Spaniard is already into the second round at Wimbledon after opening his tournament with a 7-6 (3), 7-5, 6-2 win over qualifier Mark Lajal.

He’ll play Aussie Aleksander Vukic in the second round. His likely opponents in the third and fourth round include Frances Tiafoe and Ugo Humbert.

Jannik Sinner

Sinner is a remarkable 39-3 this season and has easily been the most dominant player since leading Italy to a Davis Cup victory late last season.

The Italian won the Australian Open and also claimed titles in Halle, Miami, and Rotterdam. He is 6-0 on grass this season and was 8-3 on the surface last year.

Like Alcaraz, Sinner has a fairly favorable path to the quarter-finals.

He opened his tournament with a 6-3, 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 win over Yannick Hanfmann and faces Matteo Berrettini in the second round, which could arguably be his biggest test in the first round rounds.

Likely third and fourth round opponents include Denis Shapovalov, Tallon Griekspoor, and Lloyd Harris.

Novak Djokovic

It’s really hard to know what to expect from Djokovic considering his drop in play this season and his injury status.

To be clear, he is still an elite player, but has hardly been as dominant as he was even last year.

He has lost matches against players outside of the top-25 and is 18-6 overall without having won a title this season.

He pulled out of the French Open after reaching the quarter-finals due to injury.

Djokovic is slated to play Czechia qualifier Vit Kopriva in first-round action on Tuesday.

His second-round opponent would be either wild card Jacob Fearnley or qualifier Alejandro Moro Canas, so he has a fairly easy start to the tournament.

Karen Khachanov, Holger Rune, and Tomas Martin Etcheverry are also in his section of the bracket.

Wimbledon Contenders

Alexander Zverev

If there’s anyone outside of the top-3 worth betting in on, it’s Alexander Zverev.

The 2020 Olympic gold medalist is coming off his second grand slam final result at the French Open and held a 2-1 set lead against Alcaraz.

He was also runner-up at the 2020 US Open. Zverev has been playing at a consistent high level all season long and it appears as though it’s only a matter of time until he breaks through on the big stage.

Zverev, who is 37-11 this year, is 8-3 in the last two seasons on grass.

He has never advanced past the fourth round at Wimbledon, whereas he has made at least the semi-finals in all three other grand slams.

He plays Roberto Carballes Baena in the first round and is in the same section of the bracket as top-30 seeds Taylor Fritz, Alejandro Tabilo, and Jack Draper.

Daniil Medvedev

Daniil Medvedev is in a similar position to Zverev.

The Russian came up short at the Australian Open earlier this season, reaching the final and holding a 2-0 set advantage over Sinner before ultimately losing in five sets.

He is a strong grass court player with a 2-1 record this season and 52-23 all-time.

He was a semi-finalist at Wimbledon last year and could be a real sleeper pick in 2024.

Medvedev is already through to the second round with a dominant 6-3, 6-4, 6-2 win over American Aleksander Kovacevic in the first round.

He is due to play Alexandre Muller in the second round and arguably has the toughest section of the contenders.

Assuming a win over Muller, he would play either Jan-Lennard Struff or Zhizhen Zhang in the second round.

His fourth-round opponent could be one of Gael Monfils, Stan Wawrinka, or 10th seed Grigor Dimitrov.

Hubert Hurkacz

Hubert Hurkacz has yet to reach a grand slam final, so it’s tough to really consider him a favorite considering the talent at Wimbledon.

However, if the 27-year-old Polish player is going to break through on a major stage it’ll be at the All England Club.

He was a semi-finalist at Wimbledon in 2021 and is having a strong season.

He is at a career-best No. 7 in the world rankings with a 32-13 record overall this year, including 4-1 on grass.

He recently lost to Sinner in the final at ATP Halle and won his eighth career title in Estoril earlier this season.

Hurkacz plays qualifier Radu Albot in the first round and, if he wins, would play Arthur Fils or Dominic Stricker in the second round.

He has a fairly tough section, however, with other strong players including Francisco Cerundolo, Alex de Minaur, Tomas Machac, and Felix Auger-Aliassime.

Wimbledon Longshots

Tommy Paul

Tommy Paul is a good longshot pick as the American won his second and third career titles this season and is already into the second round after a first-round win over Pablo Martinez.

Holger Rune

Tennis fans have been waiting for Holger Rune to break through on a big stage and it has yet to happen.

He reached the quarter-finals at Wimbledon last year and has a chance to at least get back to that point this year.

He plays Soon-woo Kwon in the first round and would then match up against either Thiago Seyboth Wild or Paul Jubb.

Felix Auger-Aliassime

Similar to Rune, Felix Auger-Aliassime is a player who has been on the cusp of grand slam success in recent years but has never been able to push through.

He struggled last year, but looks to be returning to form this season.

He is 20-14 overall and, while he has struggled on grass in recent years, he went 10-3 on the surface in a breakout 2021 season when he reached the quarter-finals at Wimbledon.
