2022 Qatar World Cup

  • When: Nov. 20 – Dec. 18

Favorite: Portugal -151

Ronaldo remains Portugal’s top player. But if the Portuguese hope to become the ninth nation to ever win a World Cup, heck, if the Portueguese hope to win Group H, they must stop leaning so heavily on Ronaldo.

No doubt, Ronaldo, Portugal’s captain, must play well for the European nation to win G-H. But Ronaldo should move into the type of role Messi has at Argentina.

Lionel is the best player for Argentina. Messi understands, though, that if the Argentinians are to win the World Cup, he must allow Lautaro Martinez, Paul Dyballa and the rest of Argentina’s young stars to flourish.

Ronaldo should cede his top option status to players like Bruno Fernandes, Bernardo Silva, Diogo Jota, and 22-year-old sensation Jao Felix.

No matter if you believe Ronaldo cedes his top dog status or not, it’s best not to play Portugal to win Group H at -151 odds. Read about Uruguay to discover why.

Second Choice: Uruguay +200

Luis Suarez and Edison Cavani will play for Uruguay. Both veterans will have a big say in how well the Uruguayan’s perform.

But like Portugal and Argentina, Uruguay has become much younger for the Qatar World Cup. 24-year-old Real Madrid midfielder Federico Valverde requires maybe another club season before soccer fans start talking about him in the same breath as when they discuss Belgium’s Kevin De Bruyne or Denmark’s Christian Eriksen.

Liverpool thought so highly of 23-year-old Darwin Nunez that they transferred Nunez to replace Bayern player Sadio Mane.

24-year-old Roma defender Matias Vina and 23-year-old Ronald Araujo make for a great pair of backers. Uruguay is going through a youth movement, which means Cavani and Suarez will serve more leadership roles. If you believe in Uruguay’s young stars, the +200 odds make them an overlay to win Group H.

Dark Horse: Republic of Korea +1100

Tottenham forward and South Korean captain Sung Heung-min is a star. But there’s a reason the dark horse in Group H offers the same odds as the miracle choice.

Korea landed in a tough group. Only a couple of teams will gain berths to the second round. The Republic of Korea won’t be one of them.

If Uruguay wins Group H, Portugal will finish second. If Portugal wins Group H, the Uruguayans will stamp their ticket to the knockout stage.

Miracle: Ghana +1100

If you want to bet on one of the two longest shots on the board to win Group H, go with Ghana over the Republic of Korea. The Ghanaians don’t boast a player of Heung-min’s talents, but Ghana did battle Senegal tough and the Senegalese have become the hottest underdog at this year’s World Cup.

Not only that, but Ghana is under the radar. 22-year-old Ajax midfielder Mohamed Kudus has the chance turn into a star. Players like Kudus show up everywhere on Ghana’s roster.

Again, Ghana shouldn’t finish in the top two spots in Group H. But the Ghanaians are a better play than South Korea. So if you want to back a dog to win G-H, go with Ghana over the Koreans.
