Writer’s Breakdown and Pick for the Colts vs Texans Game

Indianapolis Colts – A Team on the Rise

The Indianapolis Colts come into this matchup above .500 for the first time this season, thanks to a hard-fought 16-10 victory over the Miami Dolphins in WWeek 7.

The Colts’ defense was the driving force behind this win, stifling Miami’s offense and forcing key turnovers.

Quarterback Anthony Richardson, while inconsistent this season, has been showing improvement, especially when supported by a strong running game.

A big storyline for the Colts heading into this game is the potential return of running back Jonathan Taylor and defensive tackle DeForest Buckner.

Taylor has been dealing with an ankle injury but is listed as questionable for Week 8, and his return would be a huge boost for Indianapolis.

The Colts’ running game has struggled without Taylor, and his presence could take some pressure off Anthony Richardson, who has thrown six interceptions this season compared to only three touchdowns.

Richardson will need to be efficient and avoid turnovers if the Colts want to leave Houston with a win.

He has been effective on the ground, using his athleticism to extend plays and scramble for key yards.

However, his passing accuracy has been an issue, as he currently holds a completion rate of just 48.5%.

To beat the Texans, Richardson must continue to improve his decision-making and take advantage of Houston’s defensive weaknesses.

Defensively, the Colts have been solid against weaker opponents but have shown vulnerabilities against stronger offenses.

The return of DeForest Buckner would significantly bolster their pass rush, giving them a better chance at disrupting Houston’s passing game.

Indianapolis’ secondary will also need to step up, as they’ll face an explosive Texans offense led by quarterback C.J. Stroud.

Houston Texans – Home Field Advantage

The Houston Texans come into this game after a tough 31-28 loss against the Green Bay Packers.

Despite the setback, the Texans have been one of the more consistent teams in the AFC this season.

Led by rookie quarterback C.J. Stroud, the Texans are 3-0 at home, and they’re looking to make it 4-0 with a win over the Colts.

C.J. Stroud has been excellent at home, boasting a 103.8 quarterback rating with nine touchdowns and only two interceptions.

He has shown poise and confidence, and his connection with wide receiver Stefon Diggs has been a major reason for Houston’s success this season.

Diggs has been a reliable target, consistently making big plays and giving the Texans a deep threat that opposing defenses have to account for.

The Texans’ ground game has also been a key factor, with running back Joe Mixon leading the way.

Mixon has been efficient, averaging 4.3 yards per carry, and is coming off a strong performance against Green Bay.

With the Colts struggling at times to stop the run, Mixon could have another big game, setting up play-action opportunities for Stroud to exploit Indianapolis’ secondary.

Houston’s defense, while not elite, has been opportunistic and capable of making big plays when needed.

The Texans rank inside the top 10 in several defensive categories, including opponent yards per pass attempt and opponent success rate.

They’ll look to put pressure on Anthony Richardson, force turnovers, and capitalize on any mistakes made by the Colts’ young quarterback.

Key Players to Watch

  • Anthony Richardson (Colts QB):
Richardson’s performance will be crucial for the Colts’ chances.
If he can limit turnovers and make plays with his legs, Indianapolis will have a shot at the upset.
  • Jonathan Taylor (Colts RB):
If Taylor is able to return, he will be a key factor in helping the Colts control the game on the ground and keep the Texans’ offense off the field.
  • C.J. Stroud (Texans QB):
Stroud has been excellent at home, and he’ll look to continue his strong play against a Colts defense that has struggled against top-tier quarterbacks.
  • Joe Mixon (Texans RB):
Mixon’s ability to establish the run will be important for Houston’s offensive success.
If he can get going early, it will open up opportunities for Stroud in the passing game.

Our Pick & Prediction

This game is shaping up to be a pivotal matchup in the AFC South, with both teams looking to make a statement.

The Colts have momentum on their side with a two-game winning streak, but their inconsistency on offense, particularly with Anthony Richardson’s struggles in the passing game, is a major concern.

On the other hand, the Texans have been solid at home, and C.J.

Stroud has shown that he can rise to the occasion in big games.

We believe that the Texans will have the edge in this game, particularly if Jonathan Taylor is unable to play or is limited in his return.

Houston’s defense has been underrated, and their ability to pressure Richardson and force him into mistakes could be the deciding factor.

On offense, C.J. Stroud and Joe Mixon should be able to take advantage of a Colts defense that has been inconsistent, especially on the road.

We expect the Texans to cover the -5.5 spread, with the final score staying UNDER the total of 45.5 points.

Houston’s home-field advantage and more consistent play at key positions give them the upper hand in this matchup.

The Colts will need a near-perfect performance from Richardson and a strong showing from their defense to pull off the upset, but the Texans seem poised to complete the season sweep.

Houston Texans at Indianapolis Colts: Week 1 Odds & Predictions for 2024 Season

Previous Betting News

The best teams in the league always tend to be those that have an elite QB under center.

For every other team, the goal is to land a QB that will be in it for the long haul and ultimately make them successful for an extended period of time.

My NFL Betting Analysis

Look at how things changed for the Kansas City Chiefs and the Cincinnati Bengals with the arrival of Patrick Mahomes and Joe Burrow, respectively.

A great QB can be transformative, and that appears to be the case with the Houston Texans after a brilliant rookie season from CJ Stroud.

The Colts also believe they have their QB of the future with Anthony Richardson, but after missing the majority of his rookie season to injury, the jury is still out.

The Texans and Colts will hook up in Week 1. Houston hits the road as a 3-point favorite, with the total set at 49.

Houston Texans Odds -158

After all the drama that surrounded DeShaun Watson for a couple of seasons, the Texans needed to find a way to move on from the QB that they thought would be their guy for years to come.

It took some time, but it certainly looks as though Houston has found their man in CJ Stroud. The rookie had a brilliant first season in the NFL, winning the division and leading his team to the playoffs.

This sport, though, is very much a what have you done for me lately business, so the pressure will be on the Texans to repeat their successes of last season.

Going back to last season, Houston is 8-4 SU in their last 12 games, but they are also just 4-10-1 SU against the Colts in recent meetings.

The Texans are 8-4 ATS in their last 12 road games, with 12 of their last 15 versus Indy going UNDER.

Indianapolis Colts Odds +129

Despite losing their starting QB in the early part of last season, the Colts still managed to put together a winning record, going 9-8, although that was not enough to take them into the playoffs.

Word is that the shoulder injury that sidelined Anthony Richardson is good and that he is ready to go, but you can bet that Colts fans are going to be holding their breath every time their QB takes a hit this season.

As mentioned, when talking about the Texans trends, the Colts have had the best of this meeting in recent years.

The Colts have, though, not been great in Week 1, going 0-9-1 SU in their last 10 opening games.

They are 6-14 ATS in their last 20 games against divisional opponents, with 7 of their last 9 meetings with Houston going UNDER the point total.

Houston Texans at Indianapolis Colts Betting Prediction

As the odds suggest, I think we are looking at a close one here, but I do like the UNDER as the way to go when wagering on this one.

I am also leaning toward the Texans, as I’m just not sure how effective Richardson will be in his return.

Indianapolis Colts 2023

In Week One, Anthony Richardson showcased a remarkable fearlessness as the Indianapolis Colts’ signal caller. Despite enduring numerous big hits during the game, Richardson displayed incredible resilience. His stat line was impressive, accumulating 40 rushing yards and a touchdown, along with 223 passing yards and another touchdown.

However, his final QBR stood at 27. It was evident that the Colts missed the presence of their star running back, Jonathan Taylor, who was sidelined for at least the first four weeks.

Among the standout performers for the Colts was wide receiver Michael Pittman Jr. He delivered a solid performance, falling just three yards short of the coveted 100-yard mark.

Pittman also exhibited reliability by catching eight passes, one of which resulted in a touchdown. Despite their offensive efforts, the Colts allowed 31 points to the Jacksonville Jaguars, ranking fourth in points allowed in Week 1 across the league.

As Indianapolis gears up to face the Baltimore Ravens in their next game, they will also be hosting the formidable Rams and Titans in the following weeks.

The Colts’ season promises to be intriguing, characterized by a rookie quarterback and the absence of an elite running back, leaving fans wondering who will emerge as the focal point of their offense.

Houston Texans 2023

On the other side of the field, the Houston Texans introduced their own rookie quarterback, C.J. Stroud, who previously made his mark in College Football at Ohio State.

Although Stroud’s performance was far from terrible, he struggled to find the end zone. He completed 28 of 44 passes for 242 yards. Nico Collins emerged as Stroud’s go-to target, contributing six receptions and amassing 80 yards during the game. Meanwhile, Damien Pierce took charge of the running back duties, recording 11 carries for 38 yards.

The Texans’ roster underwent substantial changes compared to the previous season, with several rookies being handed significant opportunities right from the start.

Defensively, the Texans allowed 25 points against a potent Baltimore offense. While they had multiple opportunities to force turnovers and get off the field, they faltered on several occasions. Looking ahead, the Texans are set to face the Jacksonville Jaguars in their next game before returning home to take on the Pittsburgh Steelers and embarking on a road trip to Atlanta.

The 2023 season promises to be an exciting one for both the Colts and the Texans, with young quarterbacks and evolving rosters defining their campaigns.

Texans Win at Home

One of these two quarterbacks is going to get their first-ever win as an NFL starting quarterback. We are going to take CJ Stroud and the Texans. They have more stability at the run game.

Both defenses were fine in Week One. Look for a low-scoring game, something like 21-20, but Houston wins and covers as the underdog!
